OK here goes:
While I did not "create" it, I do love using it. I was taught to do the "French fold" but hate to hand sew - mine just does not look nice.
This method uses that same basic principle of a strip folded in half, sew on one side and folded around to the other and sewn again. My folded binding usually measures 1-1/4"
The trick is that you make and 1/4" pipe or mini border that will show on the front. Here's how I do it.

Cut the piping color strips 2-3/4" wide (green). Cut the rest of the binding strips 2-1/4" wide (yellow). Sew the two colored strips together pressing the seam toward the piping color.

Next, fold the piping colored strip (green) over the seam so it leaves a 1/4" showing when you look at the rest of the binding (yellow).

Even up the raw edges if necessary the sew to the back of the quilt with the piping color facing you (green). Flip it to the front and "stitch in the ditch" between the two colors. Here is one in use on a baby quilt.

I hope that explains it well enough for you.

PM me if you want and I will share with you.

This really helped me with binding.

Dragonfly, thanks for posting how to do the "faux pipping binding". The gal who made the tutorial has taken it off of her site and I didn't print it out so I was having a hard time recalling what I actually did. I love doing this binding and it works really great if you are a little short on binding fabric.

It is so wonderful seeing new quilters joining our group and getting their feet wet in this wonderful craft. Please do not feel intimindated by what more experienced quilters do....we were once where you are and nobody kicked us out so we do a bit better now. To be very honest, I would not be able to pick out a "newbie" quilt. Sometimes our lives really do get to hetic for a short time and we need a bit of time off, but please, please come back! If you do need time off, you could work on a doll quilt at your own pace with no committment and then when you are able to return, you would have a finished project in hand if and when crunch time hits.

Thanks so much for posting the tute on binding, that is the reason I don't sign up for the DQS.. I hate binding and I am terrible at it. But this sounds like so much fun.
I might do it if Krystyna would pair me with a newbie or someone who don't mind terrible binding. LOL.

Thanks for the tutorial, Paula. I'll have to try that one!
Wanda Lou! Just jump in!

Just wanted to let everyone know my dq partner Birdlady sent me a pm telling me that she would send my dq out on the 30th. Her and her family need our prayers. Her 2yr old neice is having open heart surgery this week and she will be sitting with her all week. So keep them in your prayers.

Krystyna 04-24-2012 12:16 PM

Birdlady's niece is in my prayers.

Now ... a note about the May swap. We only have 47 signed up so far! If the theme is keeping you away, remember, it's optional!
