April POM Swap

~April~ Project of the Month
Sign up until March 31st
Mail by April 29th

This months project ….Garden or Quilting Apron

This is just a simple apron with pockets to hold tools and that ties around the waist.
There are no precise directions or criteria. I only ask that your finished project be something that you would be excited to receive.

If you’d like to join, please send a pm to me tlambing and include the following

Real Name
Phone #
Email address
Severe Allergies
Can you swap Internationally?

Sign ups will be open until Thursday March 31st. Names out soon after. You will have until April 29th to mail your project.

I’d really like to keep this about the project, so I am going to ask that we not send extra goodies. This will help to keep postage down as well as helping us not feel an obligation to shower our partner with gifts. If you feel you must do something extra, how about writing a poem or drawing a picture or sharing a joke? I bet you can think of something!

As soon as names are given, please contact your partner right away.
Please contact me asap if you are having trouble getting in contact.
Please continue to post on the thread throughout the swap. Let everyone know of your progress, post sneak peeks and encourage other swappers. It’s so much fun seeing everyones progress and sharing in our quilting friendship.

I ask that you let me know when you send your project and when you receive from your partner.

Any swapper that does not follow through with their obligation to the swap will be banned from future swaps and will receive bad (swap) feedback.

****Please make sure to read the general rules that apply to all swaps here on the quilting board****

I'm going to follow the swap but I am not joining in. I don't use aprons and already have a couple that just sit there. It's really a shame for me to waste someones time and talent then not use it. I do love teasing everyone though so if ya all don't mind I'll be here in spirit. Hugs Mary

Patchesnposies 03-23-2016 04:48 PM

This sounds really fun! I am in.

lynnie 03-23-2016 06:49 PM

I have a lot to do, so I'm stepping out on this one.
I'm trying to make headway on my 60*star EPP bed quilt.
Slow going due to hands cramping and severe back pain.I will, however, be lurking
around, till next month. Have fun ladies.

ckcowl 03-24-2016 01:09 AM

I'm in again. I don't wear aprons often but they are fun & sometimes I'm happy I have one. :)

dotcomdtcm 03-24-2016 04:47 AM

This is simple sewing. I'll join. Dotty

Chasezzz 03-24-2016 05:16 AM

I'm in for this!

MizMelly 03-24-2016 06:12 AM

I'm in again too! I love making aprons!! For some reason I never have any of my own tho. Guess I give them all away!! But I can use a gardener's apron for sure!

dotcomdtcm 03-24-2016 06:29 AM

Now that I have located my apron patterns, I'm in the mood to sew a bunch. Would be nice to have 4-5 for April 15
trip to California. Sewing keeps my fingers out of the cookie jar!!

tlambing 03-24-2016 07:31 AM

If you're on the fence....
Remember, this swap has only one stipulation! "make something you'd be happy to receive" So, your project is your creation. It can be as simple or grandiose as you wish.
And, if you're not an apron user, you can always gift it. Or, wrap it around a bucket to make it decorative or hang it as decor. Maybe look at this as a challenge without a known purpose......I kinda like those.
Glad to see you BRAVE souls signing up ;)

dotcomdtcm 03-24-2016 12:31 PM

I've been doing the Splendid Sampler of 6"blocks. Many would make a nice pocket for a quilt theme apron.

MizMelly 03-24-2016 02:24 PM

I like to make fun reversible aprons. I have so many patterns, now I have to decide which one would be best for this theme!

I know what you mean! I have a great2 sided bib apron, but had in mind a cool little utility one. Now what to do?

dotcomdtcm 03-24-2016 03:52 PM

I'll wait & chat with my partner. I have never worn an apron to quilt. How do you use one? I'm a baker. My aprons are always in the wash!

MizMelly 03-24-2016 04:07 PM

I need a full apron for my soap making. I just made a gardner's soap, so this is a great theme for April! And one of these days I'll do some planting, I keep thinking I want to start a flower bed in my front yard.

tlambing 03-24-2016 06:37 PM

I think a quilters apron would hold scissors marking utensils and rotary cutter. Etc for times when you're up and about, not really sitting at the machine.
Cant wait to see what we each come up with.

dotcomdtcm 03-24-2016 06:42 PM

MizMelly: The swap called for a simple apron but if I gt you, I'll make you a full apron!

MizMelly 03-25-2016 06:24 AM

Hi Dotty, I'm an over achiever. I also have a good collection of apron patterns. Of course I'd make one that covers the upper body, because one that ties around the waist doesn't help much when you spatter the top! The one pattern I THOUGHT I had doesn't seem to exist. Darn it!! I think it's out of print too!! Well, I did a search on Etsy last night for apron patterns (can't have too many, you know!), and wow!! Lots and lots of patterns, vintage, retro, new. I bought another one.... Think I'll browse some more today.

QuilterMomma 03-25-2016 08:01 AM

This looks cute, but I don't know how to make an apron. :o

dotcomdtcm 03-25-2016 08:54 AM

What? You are such an accomplished seamstress! It will be easy peasy as they say. Free instructions online!

jaba 03-25-2016 05:50 PM

I'm with you QuilterMomma, dont' wear them and have never made them. Will follow along this month and watch all your fabulous creations

dotcomdtcm 03-25-2016 07:31 PM

Then there was that sleepover when the girls crafted and cooked & I made 18 little aprons.
I wish I had my easy camera back then. Aprons are lovely gifts. I'm thinking, with a packet of seeds. For my
little friend Caroline. Can you tell I am obsessed??

RedGarnet222 03-26-2016 09:30 AM

Hi girls! I wish I had time to join in the fun, but, sadly not this month. I did run across a couple cute free patterns on the riley blake site someone might like to use for the apron swap though. Here ya go ... Happy sewing everyone! And a blessed Easter weekend.

My sister in laws Love aprons, one of them was celebrating a birthday so I made her two-- one for in the kitchen ( the sun flowers) one for in her art studio- she's a painter/artist. She loved them both. Wearing the sunflowers over the artist one for pictures. :)
gave me some practice for our project. :)

lynnie 03-27-2016 04:31 PM

beautiful, she ooks like she loves them. i love the sunflower best.

JuneBillie 03-27-2016 10:02 PM

Pretty aprons. My daughter in law loves the full bib type aprons. Every time she is out with my son, and sees a pretty one she gets him to buy it for her. She had a beautiful one on for Christmas while fixing dinner. The only one I have made is a chef apron for my hubby who still has it. It's a full apron.

MizMelly 03-28-2016 06:44 AM

I must say that I'm obsessed with aprons!! I have a number of patterns, and if that wasn't enough, I was looking for a different style and finally found two that fit the bill on Etsy, and of course, purchased them! I have about 5 apron patterns by Mary Mulari, her's are darned cute and reversible too boot!! I also have some designed by independent artists, and a number of commercial patterns. I think I've exhausted the friends and family apron gift giving tho. And I have about 12 sets that are already cut and ready to sew of one of the Mary Mulari patterns!! One thing I do is when I'm out fabric shopping, is to keep my eye out for novelty fabrics that work together, such as tea and coffee, food, bugs, knitting, oriental, Route 66, seashore, etc. So by buying 2 yards of complimentary fabrics, I can make reversible aprons that will hold up to splatters and spills without soaking through a single layer, and they make a cute statement to boot! I tend to put an apron in every package of the "Secret Santa" gift exchange too.

dotcomdtcm 03-28-2016 07:07 AM

The swap asked for simple 2 pocket half aprons so let's not scare off anyone. Those aprons are fantastic but do
require a lot more effort. I'll see what my partner requests.

MizMelly 03-28-2016 08:09 AM

A half apron that ties around the waist and has one or more pockets are the easiest, simplest garment to make, which is the guidelines for this swap.

Although I would like to make one of those more elaborate aprons that I was listing examples of, for this swap, I will make whatever my partner requests. (half aprons can be cute and flirty without being challenging to make). Do people prefer something more utilitarian? Like an apron for a quilter? I suppose that could work, but wouldn't the tools fall out when you sit down at the sewing machine? How about a half apron with pockets for clothes pins? Yes, I could use one of those!! (I hang my clothes since I don't have a dryer). Chef aprons are half aprons that wrap and tie around the waist also.
Is someone a budding artist and needs a certain type for their crafting? I certainly do. For as many aprons as I make (most are fancy), they aren't what I'd want to use when I'm doing my soaping. Funny, I haven't made one for myself yet, and I SHOULD! Or when I'm dyeing fibers. That is another area where I could use something but don't. I just stain my clothes!!
Right now I have a mission to find a certain type of apron (cover up) based on a pinafore style from the 1800's for my sister who wants to market them to a certain group of ladies that she socializes with. It's harder to find the right style than I thought it would be. Aprons are currently the latest fad in a lot of circles, just doing a search on Pinterest or Etsy can give lots and lots of examples of many different styles. Mind boggling how far styles have come from the basic ones from the 70's and 80's.
Lots of examples are out there, many are very easy and simple, so don't be shy, join the fun and get another project/gift finished for future gifting or swapping!

QuilterMomma 03-28-2016 03:56 PM

Oh that is right, you have seen some of my jackets. Uh, well, those are jackets, not aprons. Now I have been caught. LOL

Ladybug 1938 03-30-2016 03:23 PM

I hope you all are still talking to me, haven't been on the computer very much the past few months, my daughter came in last week and my so will be in next week and then my youngest daughter will be here at the end of the month, am hoping I can get active again in May, will keep checking in and see all the aprons, my sewing room is being used as a bedroom so have been hand quilting a quilt and doing some Tea towels ( embroidery) I did sell my house closed on Monday so that is done, the year anniversary of John's death was Good Friday while my daughter was here, difficult weekend. Feel I can get on with the rest of my life now. One day at a time.. Sorry I got so chatty but wanted to let you all know I think of you all so very often and miss you. Sending big hugs to you all... Rosemary ( Ladybug)

tlambing 03-30-2016 05:46 PM

Take care, Teresa

Hoping to join in for the April POM swap as I live aprons.

dotcomdtcm 03-31-2016 04:08 AM

Spoke with a QB friend who does not wear aprons. So? A gift ? A holiday theme? Something for a little girl?
One of my friends loves black & white. Another just renovated her kitchen with a red & browns theme. Maybe you know someone who would love a handmade apron. Then there is Secret Santa, you know...
