Batik Block Swap - Signups thru 2-15-13 - Due 2-28-13

Batik Block Swap!

I love batiks and would love to see how others on the board like to use them. This is my first swap hosting on this board and I am excited by my experiences I have had participating in other swaps. The creativity in this group is INSPIRING!! Now on to business…

Block rules:

Blocks are to be made in sets of 6, one of which will be returned to you. No duplicate sets without prior permission, and sets must be of the same design, but the fabrics may vary.

You may make up to 8 sets of 6 blocks each for a total of 48 blocks. No duplicate sets without prior permission, and sets must be same design, but fabrics may vary.

Block sizes should be 10.5 inches, so if you make 48 blocks, your top would be at least 60 x 80.

All skill levels are invited to participate. Be sure to use quality 100% cotton fabrics & appropriate threads that will withstand repeated washings, and your fabrics MUST be pre-washed. ** If you’re using jellyrolls that won’t be pre-washed, please make a note of that on your block labels.

All block styles and methods are encouraged! Machine embroidery, hand embroidery, traditional pieced, paper pieced and both machine and hand appliqué (if you choose to do appliqué, you MUST sew your appliqué down by some method that looks appropriate and please do NOT use monofilament thread to do this). Please do your best work and make something that you would want to have, because you WILL be getting back a block of your own, so use colors and themes that you are proud to send in and will be happy to get back.

Make sure all blocks are labeled with your user name and real name if you wish, and that they have no holes or tears or have too small of seam allowances that would make them unfit to swap, and that they are the size they are supposed to be, in other words, 10 1/2 inches means 10 1/2 inches, not 10 3/8 inches, etc.

Signups will be opened until Feb 15, 2013, blocks need to be completed and to me by Feb 28, 2013. Blocks received after that date will be returned to you unswapped. I will swap them out and get them back in the mail to you by the following week.
Please PM me to sign up and give me an idea of the number of block sets you will be making and sending in. If you’d like to include what colors you will be using, I will post that as well.

Mailing and postage:

Please put your blocks in a gallon size ziploc bag for shipping and put your name and address on the bag. This will protect your hard work in case the mailman leaves a package outside and will get your items back to you in the event of a mailer malfunction.
Please also include a self-addressed label along with a $6 money order or well concealed cash to cover return postage to you. These will be sent priority mail with delivery confirmation. If proper postage is not sent, your package will wait until it is received.

In addition to the above, please follow all the basic rules, found here. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-20154-1.htm

Questions? Suggestions? Problems?

PM me any time

tracibug 11-29-2012 04:38 PM

And to answer a few questions that I had not:

10.5" is the unfinished size.

Please be sure to trim all salvages from your fabrics before sewing.

Postage: you may also include a $6.00 in postage or combination of postage/cash, if you'd prefer.

Traci - --

Quick question: May we use a solid as a background i.e., Kona black or do you want the entire quilt block from batiks?

Thanks & looking forward to this swap!

Jane

tracibug 12-02-2012 11:24 PM

Hi Jane-

The entire block should be batiks...

Now that we've all opened our Secret Santa boxes, may be we can start focusing on our other projects that need to be worked on!!

Hoping others will find time to join this swap. :-)

jclinganrey 12-17-2012 10:52 AM

Just curious, Traci - - - how many people do you have signed up so far?

Jane

tracibug 12-17-2012 12:52 PM

Sadly, only 3... :(

I'll start trying to recruit a bit more after Christmas.

Is there anyway to move the finish date a little later? To busy for December. This is one I'd love to join if the finish date were later.

jaba 12-19-2012 08:17 AM

Confused, thread title says sign up until 2-15-13 and mail by 2-28-13 but in your rules you say sign up until 1-15-13 and mail by 1-31-13....which dates are right???

tracibug 12-19-2012 09:32 AM

Hi Jaba-

We changed the dates in hopes of getting more to sign up, but I'm unable to update my text. I'll see if Patrice can help me.

Thank you!![

10 1/2 in. block size is not as easy as 12 1/2 in. block size. There are just way more patterns available for 12 1/2 in. blocks. To be honest in all the ten plus yrs of quilting I do not think I ever did 10 1/2 in. sized blocks. Maybe it will help if the block size is changed? Also I think once the holidays are over more people will sign up.I am still thinking about signing up.

lovngrandma 12-23-2012 08:48 PM

i woudl love to join, i have no paticks so i did ask for a littel help and i await her answer, and i can pay pal Jan 3rd for fabric, im looking forward to this , i love batiks but have none, ...yet....

lovngrandma 12-23-2012 08:51 PM

i also do agree, about the block size, i will have much less to choose from being that size, and just thought i would give my input, i do want in

jclinganrey 12-23-2012 09:16 PM

I'm actually GLAD to see a swap using a different quilt block size. Check out Quilt Blocks Galore and look through her 10 inch blocks - - - huge selection. Or Google 10 inch quilt blocks. Lots more. I see this as a great opportunity to challenge myself and mix things up a little. Thanks! I'm working diligently on my 10 inch blocks.

Jane

QuilterMomma 12-27-2012 08:26 AM

This looks interesting. Considering joining in. It would be more of a challenge to have the 10" blocks size. All 12" block patterns can be sized down to the 10" size. Just takes that word "math". I use Mary Ellen Hopkins book where in she assists with the math and has several patterns that help in changing the size of block. I know I did another swap with the 10" blocks and actually enjoyed the resulting pattern. This could be done.

Tam...Moo 12-28-2012 01:17 PM

I did not even like batiks until I saw blocks that quiltermomma made and now My imagination has dreamed of a batik quilt. So many swaps. So little time....

Hi Everyone! I love batiks & I have my 1st block done, so I thought I'd show it. It could almost be two blocks, but it's really the same block with the pieces of fabric swapped. (Do you think it would qualify as two different blocks?)
Sorry the picture is sideways. I rotated it, but it doesn't work when I put it on my desktop.

bbmerald, I way I read the rules is you would qualify for 1 set. Your fabrics can be different in each set but each set of 6 has to be a different pattern. Not real positive but that is the way I read it. Would be much easier if all sets were the same fabric and each set had to be a different design. Think probably it was done in case you run 1 block short of a fabric you could sub it and not have the whole set ruined. Hope we'll hear more. I'm trying to pick my so I have enough for all 6 the same, just easier for me.

Muse&Sew 12-28-2012 09:16 PM

No problem, I just thought I'd ask. Kind-of fun with the positive/negative values!

these are cool,i like them alot, and now that i got my secret Santa i have a few batiks i can make a few blocks with, and i am gonna get some at an awesome price also, but will stick to one set, have to re red the rules as still not sure if pattern has to be the same on all blocks but fabric can change are exactly how it is so will reread as little one is down now, again, lol, going read now

Got three sets sewed together today so thought I'd share with all of you and see what you thinkHave 3 more picked out, blues, pinks, purples. Tomorrow hope to do some more. It does take a little searching to find the right size, but I like it. Something a little different.

Muse&Sew 12-29-2012 09:18 PM

pretty blocks Jaba! Love the turtles & your bright cheery fabric!

Annaquilts 12-29-2012 09:53 PM

What a gorgeous blocks everyone posted!

Kequilts 01-01-2013 11:23 AM

I'm in! I recently participated in a batik fat eighths swap. Can't wait to dig into that stash! Santa also brought me a new Babylock Symphony, so I'm ready to go! :o

lovngrandma 01-01-2013 11:30 PM

ok ladies, i have found much more in 10 in blocks taht i ever thought of, thank you for the assist, no pics yet, will work a bit on the and get the fabric all picked out first, and then cut, then ill give a teaser, show my progress, i guess we are sopposed to do that, are not, some want u to some want it to be a surprise and i will print off the thread here in a minute, looking forweard to this wapp, so so cool

jaba 01-02-2013 07:49 AM

Got 2 more sets done and almost 1 more. Will post pics soon. Seems like I got more cutting done than anything else, cut 1 set and didn't like the color placement, cut another color and that wasn't much better, third time charm. Now I have all kinds of 3 3/8" triangles and 4" squares, there might be a scrappy in my future.

quiltingmommy 01-02-2013 09:47 AM

For those looking for block ideas: http://www.quilterscache.com/BlocksbySizeB.html

100 or so just in the 10 inch size. Plenty to choose from, no need to stress about the size :o

I am thinking about this swap, one problem though, I only have one fabric that is batik. Need to go shopping.
