Boomerang 7.0-FIRE Group

Boomerang Friendship Swap 7.0 Mailing deadline to mail all blocks home to their owners is July 15, 2012.

Hello and welcome to the Boomerang Friendship Swap. You are the FIRE Group. Please remember how the swap works.

How it works:
1) You will select a fabric or selection of fabrics from your stash (or you can buy new-up to you) and cut them in to Fat Eighths (18 x 11).
2) You will send each member in the swap one F8 to work with. The person who receives the fabric will make you a block with your fabric in it.
3) You may advise the person of colors you would prefer they use or not use but please do not request specific blocks. This is meant to be a “friendship” swap where your friends pick, design and create a beautiful 12.5” unfinished block for you based on the fabric you send them.
4) In turn you will receive an F8 from each member in the swap and have to make them a block.

Rules/Guidelines:
(please make sure to also refer to the basic policies that apply to all swaps announced through the board: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-20154-1.htm )
1) Please make sure all fabric is prewashed prior to making the block and sending it home.
2) When sending your fabric please make sure it is in some kind of sealed item (Ziploc baggy, saran wrap) with a piece of paper or even a peel-off label with your name, address and quilt board name so that the items are protected and won’t get mixed up. Please do this when returning blocks as well. (This way if for some unhuman reason the PO mangles a package the plastic has a chance at saving the work and with an address visible it just might make it home)
3) Please mail your F8 within three weeks of receiving the address list. This helps ensure we all have ample time to work on everyone's blocks.
4) Please handle all fabric received with the utmost care and place it somewhere where it won’t be lost or forgotten about.
5) In order to help keep track of the blocks sent and received I will be emailing out a chart to all members who participate so that you may fill it in as we go.
6) All blocks should be 12.5” unfinished. They can be regular pieced, paper-pieced, appliquéd-whatever the quilter decides to do. It is up to each individual. Again the feeling is to get a true friendship quilt out of this. Please remember to measure two, three times and cut once and do your very best to make sure the finished block you are sending home is 12.5". PLEASE PLEASE MEASURE YOUR BLOCKS!
7). Please remember to trim your threads, cut your dog ears...in essence remove any excess work from the back of your block that the receiver should not have to worry about. We do not want to have any extra bulk in these blocks that are not needed (harder to quilt them :-) )
8) You may sign the back of the block if you wish to or perhaps pin a small muslin square with your name, where you live and what the name of the block is.
9) Please measure your block before mailing it. We all started somewhere but it is nice to be able to get all the blocks back measuring the same size so the quilt can go together nicely.
10) Please make a block that you yourself would be happy and proud to call your own.
11) This is a one block per swapper swap. You will have to make 16 blocks in this group.
12) Please be courteous to our swappers and post when you receive either someone's fabric or a completed block. This helps us to know the postal gremlins are not at work lol If for some reason you cannot get on the board to post please let me know and I will let the members know. We appreciate interaction with all of our swappers.
13) Have FUN!!! This swap will let you explore your creativity as you do not have to make the same block for everyone. You can try that block you always wanted to. Try new fabrics, new colors...step outside of your comfort zone in to a different box

PLEASE DO NOT SEND FABRICS/BLOCKS WITH PERFUME OR OVERWHELMING FRAGRANCES ON THEM DUE TO ALLERGIES. THERE MAY BE MEMBERS OR FAMILY MEMBERS WHO HAVE SEVERE ALLERGIES TO CERTAIN THINGS SO PLEASE TRY YOUR BEST TO NOT SEND ANYTHING THAT COULD CAUSE AN ATTACK

Also please remember when posting on the board to use members board names or just first names and not their full names. This is a courtesy to our members as the information here can be seen publicly and we do not want anyone to have that private info.

Please, NO public complaints or criticisms of other swappers, items received, or other type for any reason. ALL complaints must be addressed by Private Message (pm) to me. THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE!!!!!

Just one more friendly reminder-please make sure your packages have proper postage on them-if you are unsure either take them to the PO or throw another stamp on. We do not want anyone to have to incur any extra expense during this fun time.

I think you will find yourself enjoying the blocks because you can work at your pace as they come in as long as they are all out by the established deadline.

As always please feel free to PM me with any questions or concerns-I am always happy to help.

Hugs
April

Me three. Can we take a field trip??? Envelopes are ready and will head to post office tomorrow. I'm excited we are FIRE!!!

LindaC 03-14-2012 03:01 AM

Hello fellow swappers. I've ordered my fabric last week so hopefully it should arrive this week so I can get it washed, ironed and cut. This is a long weekend here in Ireland as Monday is a bank holiday because St Patrick's Day falls on Saturday so a great weekend for some sewing.

NDQuilts 03-14-2012 04:03 AM

I am excited to sew with you. I have three different fabrics going out for swap that will coordinate together into this quilt. I am not a pre-washer, so I need to do that today with these cuts. Hopefully by the first of next week some of you will have my squishie in hand!

MdmSew'n'Sew 03-14-2012 05:28 AM

Greetings, my fellow Fire-d up quilters. I have washed and dried my fabric, will not be able to iron it until tomorrow.:( I hope to get the envelopes out Saturday. I'm really looking forward to my first BOOM, and seeing what I can do with all your wonderful fabrics, I expect my brain to grow a few sizes bigger by the time this is over. :) Let the fun begin!
BTW, I think we should plan a short trip to Ireland and Germany, bring our F8ths in person! I'll drive. What do you all think?

QuilterMomma 03-14-2012 07:53 AM

Wow, I just checked my email with my list. you ladies are quick. I know which fabric to use so will get it prewashed. not something I do that often, except for these swaps. I will get on those envelopes today, wash and dry and iron tonight and get cut up when i get a new blade then mail out no later than Monday. Be ready for mine, it is a hot orange/red volcanic looking fabric. yes, it is going to be wild so hopefully you will have some fun with it.

What fun this would be!!

Happy to be in the FIRE group (kind of used to being in a "fire" group!)!! April, how did you know my husband is a firefighter (actually retired fire chief 1/2 yrs now)!!!??!!!

I have most of my squishies ready to mail, today or tomorrow. I brought them with me on my trip. But now that we have a couple extra boomers I am short two. So sorry! I will mail those squishies (for Judy/goldendog55 and Janelle/jahaper) once I am home (March 27 or 28). Looking forward to receiving all your fabrics and begin the design process!! Can't wait to see what you boomers make for me!

quiltingnonie 03-14-2012 10:34 AM

HELPPPP! I have all my fabric cut, wrapped and in envelopes ready to mail. Just happened to check this thread, and realized I made a terrible mistake. I cut my fabric 9" x 11", instead of 18" x 11". My theory was: if a FQ is 18x22, well then half of that - 9x11- would be a F8. :(

What to do? Should I see if I have enough fabric to add an addition 9"x11" piece? Buy more fabric and start over?

Please give me some advice, all you experienced swappers.

wanda lou 03-14-2012 10:49 AM

Hello all my FIRE friends , so happy to be part of this group and this is my first BOOM.

I am all up for a field trip, so happy you will be driving.

Yosamitesa 03-14-2012 11:29 AM

Alright "FIRE" ladies...my squishies are in the mail!!! Thank you to those who said to wrap with the press n' seal cling wrap and place in a regular envelope. They all went for 45 cents in the US and $1.05 to the lovely ladies in Ireland and Germany!!! :) So...keep your eyes out for a "letter" from Texas!!! :D

yayaquilts 03-14-2012 12:34 PM

quiltingnonie: FYI a fat eighth is actually a 1/4 yard (9" x 42") cut on the fold so it is 9" x 22" ( i worked in a quilt shop for 6 years!) Asking April is probably the right thing to do. I would think we could work with two pieces 9" x 11"-they'd probably work in most block patterns.

Thanks for the info on postage Yosamitesa!!

LovingIzabella 03-14-2012 12:37 PM

Laurie,
Do not fret my friend! Try to add another 9x11 piece in and if you do not have enough fabric you can send me the small piece and I will make it work.
Thanks yaya the technical F8 is 9"x22". I use the 18x11 for this swap because it gives a little bit larger cutting area just in case you want to do a block that requires say a 10.5" square or something lol :)
I am picking my fabric out this evening...thinking one I got from the LQS awhile ago may be nice....hmm decisions decisions

PS
Karen I remembered you mentioning hubby was a ff ;) My BF is a ff as well. I was one for a period in time so that I could do for others what was done for me when mom and I were in a really bad car accident. I knew I had to resign out when I was doing ladder ops and my knee locked on the ladder wrap and one of my fellow ff's had to come up the back of the ladder to get my leg unwrapped. Knew I could not take the chance of that happening if someone else's life depended on me :(

I have most of my fabric in the envelopes and ready to go. Need to cut one more, then out they go today or tomorrow.

Just wanted to let all you ladies that I have mailed my fabric to day.

QuilterMomma 03-15-2012 01:49 PM

Oh my, I better get hopping on this. i need a new blade first otherwise my back won't take that much pressure from cutting. Off to Joann's I will be or will send a child to get.

wanda lou 03-15-2012 02:47 PM

I mailed half of my fabric today and rest will go out in the next couple of days.

wanda lou 03-15-2012 02:52 PM

I am using Black and white fabric , excited to see what you all make.

NDQuilts 03-15-2012 03:17 PM

Here are the three fabrics that I am sending, washed pressed and ready to cut.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/29241801@N02/6839756342/" title="uploaded by iFlickr by ndumot01, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7044/6839756342_b9d8e89b84.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="uploaded by iFlickr"></a>

Country quilts tend to sell around me and I am left with bits and pieces from orders. I want to incorporate these blocks into a country scrappy quilt to use up the leftovers.

Yaya-yes I was so excited to be able to do it and I truly enjoyed the rewarding feeling that it gave me. Now I just commend those who can. I made my BF (best friend not boy friend as I am married lolol) a firefighter quilt for his 40th birthday. He loved it and uses it every day. So many people were like you should hang it up or put it away and never use it. To me that is NOT what a quilt is about. It is not loved if it is not used is my opinion.
And yes I feel so much better than I have in so long! It feels beyond amazing to feel human again and to be able to see AND feel my legs again! :)
OK Darla-In order to make the groups even I did not put you in the fire group. I am so sorry. I hope this is okay with you. It was really hard balancing the groups this time around.

Ladies you all will be helping me with a very special project-new bathroom curtains LOL. I am redoing our bathroom and have decided to go from ducks to western. So anything you want to make is great with me all I ask is you stick with the colors in the F8 I send. I am attaching a picture of my fabric...hope it inspires you all :)
Hugs

Yosamitesa 03-16-2012 06:47 AM

OK...so I already have ideas for moonrise's block!!! I sortof have an idea for our wonderful coordinator LovingIsabella... NDQuilts...Hmmm...will have to see which color I get to decide. :) Wanda Lou, I love your black and white idea. I'm actually working on a black and white with red fabric right now. :) Gonna be FUN!!! :) Can't wait to see what everyone else sends in!!! :D

wanda lou 03-16-2012 11:47 AM

Moonrise I received your fabric today, and can't wait to get started.
Yosa I have always wanted a black and white quilt but never got around to making one for ME. and I love the idea of adding a slpash of red but I wasnt sure if we could suggest color or not. I can't wait to see what you create.

buddy'smom 03-16-2012 12:03 PM

OK, FireWomen, I got my fabric mailed out today (Fri) to everyone. I was able to add an additional piece of fabric, so you should have plenty for a block. (See my previous post)

My method of making blocks is "First In, First Out" -- I write the date I rec'd the F8 on the envelope when I get it. (And I don't waiver from that method, no matter HOW tempted I may be!) Please know that I will be on vacation the middle 2 weeks of April, so no sewing then. I'm going to Florida - WOOOHOOO!

buddy'smom 03-16-2012 01:55 PM

Oh, I so agree with you, first in and out. I also mark mine as they come in and do them in order. Have a great time.
