Dates Changed - 10.5" Layer Cake Squares Swap

Get ready for a 10.5” Layer Cake Swap!

Each set a swapper submits will have 12 different squares of any 1 (one) 100% cotton ANY colored quality quilting fabric (no flannel, no homespun, no eyelets, and no broadcloth) Keep in mind send what you would like to receive in return. Future swaps of specific color themes may take place in the future dependent on interest.

Squares should be carefully cut from 100% cotton fabric. Fabrics that fray easily or are fairly easy to see through are not good candidates for this swap.

Please be advised that fabrics that are not square, squares too wonky or too off grain, squares that are shedding, squares that contain selvages, or those that are not 10.5” or larger, will be returned unswapped.

Here’s how it works: - In your packet to me you will enclose:

* 1 gallon size Ziplock bag with 12 ct – 10.5” squares of one fabric for each set
* Selvages must be removed entirely from both selvage ends- Including selvage holes.
* Please remember that each set of 12 must be cut from different fabrics. The sets may be the same, but wouldn’t have to be, as long as each swapper gets 12 different fabrics.
* Number of sets are limited to six per padded flat-rate envelope. HOWEVER, if you wish to exchange more than six, you are allowed to send more than one envelope. Just be aware you will be needing to send enough postage to cover BOTH envelopes, not just the one. I will not be able to do “special” mailings with different envelopes to accommodate merging two full sets of exchanges. If this becomes an issue, we will just learn from it and limit the future swaps to what will fit in one flat-rate envelope
* Fabric can be washed or unwashed, but needs to be new looking and not faded; ironed and in gallon bags for safe passage thru USPS.
* Swap is limiting the number of holiday or licensed fabrics to one per bag, max.
* Try to swap fabrics that have not been swapped before to keep it fresh for those who participate in multiple swaps.
* Be sure to put your screen name on each baggie so the swappers know who to thank!
* Your screen name Must be on the outside of the package. Packages are not opened until it is time to redistribute (so I don’t lose anything!), and this helps me keep track of who has already been received.
* Please put your return postage of $7.55 in a sandwich baggie NOT in with fabric. I’ve had issues in the past, thanks! No personal checks, please. Please be sure to put your name and mailing address in with it.

* Sign up by Feb. 12th, fabric to me by Feb 25th, with redistribution by March 2nd.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask.
Enjoy!
Chris

Restillettos, I'm in. I will pm you my info.

Welcome! I look forward to getting to know you. Many on here will attest to my nuttiness :)

Question

Can each set be of the same fabric?
For instance, set 1 has one fabric, set 2 has another fabric.
Just want to be sure.

No. It says 12 different fabrics in each set. Unless you mean can each set have the same variety of 12, then yes. Don’t put any two of the same fabric in a ziplocksd set.

zozee 01-30-2019 11:51 AM

Curious why 10.5 and not the typical 10” layer cake?

moonrise 01-30-2019 09:38 PM

I'm definitely in! :D Will PM you shortly.

moonrise 01-30-2019 11:22 PM

Update: I've pulled enough fabric from my stash for 12 sets (2 envelopes' worth). I'll try to not to make more than 6 sets identical for easier swapping.

In the event of duplicates, that's A-OK with me. You know me. I always love duplicates! :D

I'll iron, cut, and put the sets together when DH and I get back from our little "mountain escape" early next week. :)

marietta 01-31-2019 01:23 AM

This is a swap I would have loved to participate in!! But reading the dates , doesn't give me much time to go go thru my fabric, wash, iron, package etc lol. Have lots of fun drooling over your packages when you get them ladies, I will be envious.

I sent a PM to clarify the dates. That's only, like, 2 days to sign up, so I'm wondering if it was supposed to say March? I'm sure she'll get back to us right away. :)

redstilettos 01-31-2019 05:59 AM

Oh my gosh folks.....I'm off a week.

Mercy.

Let me PM Patrice and see if we can change that. OMG@ me.
LOL

Sign up by Feb. 12th, fabric to me by Feb 25th, with redistribution by March 2nd? We'll see if Patrice can change it for us.

I went with 10.5" since that is how the past swaps were taking place? First time swapping this size. What are your thoughts?

Queenbarbiej 01-31-2019 07:26 AM

10.5" is okay but some of my fat quarters have wonky ends. By the time I get the ends straight and cut the 1" salvage off I only have enough for one 10.5" square. I m use to the 10" layer cakes. I understand the extra 1/2". It's just incase you wash the squares before use and you will have a little bit of shrinkage. This way you have 10" blocks if they do shrink after washing and drying.

moonrise 01-31-2019 07:54 AM

One thing I noticed when rough-cutting my 10-1/2" x WOF strips is that some of my fabrics weren't a full 42" after the selvage is removed. Theoretically a person should be able to get four 10-1/2" squares from one WOF of fabric, but in some cases, I'll only be able to get three squares. I guess some manufacturers like to "be frugal" when it comes to the width. :p

I would be able to get four 10-1/4" squares, though. Is that close enough? If not, it's perfectly fine because I can use the leftover "short" piece for another project. :)

Either way, it's nice having the squares a bit oversized to allow for shrinkage and ruler differences. :)

Edited to add: The dates work for me either way, but there will probably be more folks to sign up if they have a little additional time. :)

sunrise450 01-31-2019 11:44 AM

I would like to be in this swap. I have my fabrics picked out and waiting downstairs to be ironed and cut. Red, Do I need to send you a PM again? No problem if you do.

kwyltaholic 01-31-2019 07:10 PM

sets

What does this mean?

* Please remember that each set of 12 must be cut from different fabrics. The sets may be the same, but wouldn’t have to be, as long as each swapper gets 12 different fabrics.

Queenbarbiej 01-31-2019 09:06 PM

Kywltaholic, a set is one bag of 12 fabrics. So far I have 2 bags done.

redstilettos 02-01-2019 05:48 AM

Okay, folks,

We did the date change. My concern is many might not re-read this thread. So this first swap may be a little small in number given my major problem with not being able to read a calendar correctly.

Let's give it some time and we'll see what happens. Worst case scenario, we have baggies already cut for the next one :)

So sorry for the major confusion!

dieldoffaisies 02-01-2019 05:45 PM

I've wanted to do a swap for a while! I'm just not sure my stash is "cool" enough to swap.;)

Welcome to the Board! I like a mix of fabrics for scrappy quilts. Probably it's fine! :-)

Queenbarbiej 02-01-2019 07:37 PM

Dieldofaisies, whatever you have (as long as it is cotton) I think everyone would be fine with. That's just my opinion.

kwyltaholic 02-01-2019 07:50 PM

queenbarbiej

Ok, so that is 12 different or the same?
I just don't want to send something that is wrong. I did that before!

Queenbarbiej 02-01-2019 08:55 PM

kwyltaholic that would be 12 different fabrics in a bag. Each bag can be the same fabrics.

dieldoffaisies 02-01-2019 09:08 PM

Is there a preferred method of cutting? (Pinking shears vs rotary cutter..)

Queenbarbiej 02-01-2019 10:54 PM

dieldoffaisies it is up to you. I prefer rotary cutter. That's because I don't to do a lot of hand cutting.

marietta 02-02-2019 06:35 AM

I had questions, lol, but they seem to have been mostly answered :-). From the comments, looks like there are about 8 of us, not a bad number and start. Have to get back to cutting, have a Blessed day.

zozee 02-02-2019 03:38 PM

I’m in for 6 sets.

kwyltaholic 02-02-2019 07:18 PM

Ok, I'll sign up for five sets.

Red I have six sets done. As I was putting my sets in gallon bags, they don't quite fit. There's a little over 1/2" thats gets folded over. Here's a picture to show you what I mean.

Queenbarbiej 02-04-2019 07:46 AM

Red I have six sets done. Where do I mail these to?

Batik 54 02-04-2019 09:07 AM

I have been waiting for a swap. I am in for 6 sets. I would prefer the 10 inch square because sometimes I buy the precuts, but 10.5 works for me. I definately have enough yardage. My understanding is anything goes in terms of color, geometric, floral, I spy, etc. Can't wait.

redstilettos 02-04-2019 09:36 AM

Okay so far I believe we have:

Queenbarbie
Moonrise
Sunrise (always kills me we get the sunrise after the moonrise....get it? Okay, I know...am a nerd) LOL
zozee
Kwyltaholic
Batik54
Redstilettos

I'm not certain if Marietta, Givio, and Dieldorffdaisies are joining or ??

As for the fabric questions: Each baggie needs to have different pattern fabrics in it. If you are swapping more than one Set (i.e. what is all in the baggie) each Set can be the same or different. Does that help?

Not quite sure how to respond to the slight foldover in the ziplocks. I wish I could get a hold of the quilter who did this swap years ago and find out what they were doing.

Once I have a concrete list I will pm with my mailing info :)

MaryMo 02-05-2019 11:10 AM

I'm guessing that I didn't send you my information since my name is not on the list, Red. I'm hoping I can still join with six baggies of twelve 10 1/2" squares.

If I remember from past swaps, squares were folded over. The squares I found in a baggie were folder over somewhere in the middle (not in half exactly but folded over as a group). Hope that helps . . .

marietta 02-05-2019 03:31 PM

Sorry Red, I'm in ...just not sure how many sets yet. What info do I pm to you?

moonrise 02-05-2019 06:12 PM

Mine are ready to mail. Just need to double-check the address when you get a chance. :)

dieldoffaisies 02-06-2019 05:48 AM

I'm in! I'll probably do 2 sets.

redstilettos 02-06-2019 09:30 AM

No need to pm me. Just need to know how many we have :)

I did this previously and it might be that you need a different brand name baggie. For some reason I think I had to buy the ones with a zipper type closure.

peaceandjoy 02-09-2019 06:54 PM

Just saw this swap and would like to participate. I haven't done many swaps lately and would like to get back into it.

I'm going to go with six sets of 12 different fabrics this time around, so one full envelope.

Will pull fabrics and start cutting tomorrow!

11 + 1 Wild Child

I signed up to send 6 sets of layer cakes.

For my 12 fabrics, I decided to cut 11 identical sets of fabric, plus 1 fabric I'm calling a Wild Child. The Wild Child is unique to each set--only one of its kind. Hope you like all 12 coming your way!

Do you have a favorite "child" among these pictured? Just curious what your tastes are.

Oops! Good thing I took a picture. When I counted these "wild child" fabrics on the screen, I realized there were only 5, not 6. Apparently I was absent the day the kindergarten teacher taught counting.

Here's a picture featuring the correct number of Wild Child fabrics.

Again, I'd love to know which of the 12 is your favorite.
