Dwina, so sorry about your FIL. The flu on top of everything ... he's in the right place, at least. They'll take care of him.

Lynnie, glad you're on the mend! Still, take it easy & don't rush things.

Everybody, take care of yourselves!

TOOMANYUFO'S 01-28-2015 03:51 PM

We are going to try to see him tomorrow. The snow just stopped a couple hours ago. We are going to have more snow tomorrow thru Sat. and then again Mon. Lynnie glad you are doing better. I will let you know before the deadline if I feel I can play this month. I am not going to do the MR swap for Feb. If I do any swaps it will be this one. Thank you all for the well wishes and prayers.

lynnie 01-28-2015 04:21 PM

I'm ready to ship. see, this is why I get going early, I got sick and it set me back, but thank goodness, I get things done ahead of time.

Really looking forward to seeing all the goodies this month. I love hearts and valentines day. one of my fav. holidays, even when I wasn't married. it's fun to see how other interpret the theme.

lynnie 01-28-2015 04:22 PM

Dwina, hope he's feeling better and that you're able to join us this month. you'll be missed if you don't join.

lawsonmugs 01-29-2015 09:16 AM

Hummm.... Sure is quiet here this morning.

nhnative 01-29-2015 09:31 AM

I just got home. They said rain/icy but warming up. I left here and it was raining a little. One hour later it was so bad that the streets started to get icy so I came home. I actually only have to stuff my pc, will be done my nc today and on for the goodies. I'm really early this time.

lawsonmugs 01-29-2015 11:47 AM

Good girl Pat. Be careful out there.

lynnie 01-29-2015 12:18 PM

Mary, where is everyone, are they at a party and forgot to invite us???
Any new pkgs get delivered today? looking for pictures, I'm a picture junkie.
i'll admit it. I might do two next month. haven't decided yet. have a great day all.

Patchesnposies 01-29-2015 01:29 PM

I was gone all morning to the courthouse. Glad to be home but feel like I was hit by a truck! Weather came in over the mountains and the barometric pressure must have dropped because my joints are SO achy. Hope I am not getting the flu!

I am waiting for my name for this month, anyone know when they'll be sent out? I am ready to send!

lynnie 01-29-2015 01:35 PM

I'm ready too, can't wait to see the new ideas coming in.

I know a lot of us are into hexies but some are also into yoyos. I found this on Pinterest today and thought how clever. Here is a picture for you Lynnie. Yoyo Shamrocks!

How cool are those! Are they lapel pins/brooches?

klaws 01-29-2015 02:23 PM

The lady made them into ornaments for her feather tree. I think you could make them into whatever you want. You could put a pin on the back or even a magnet.

lynnie 01-29-2015 02:53 PM

oh I love them. how lovely.they are cute and elegant. I want to make some.

thanks for showing us them.

ctyankee 01-29-2015 03:21 PM

Love the yo-yo shamrocks! Great idea!

I'm also ready to send my PC & NC out to someone!

TOOMANYUFO'S 01-29-2015 03:36 PM

Went to the hospital today. My FIL now has a blood infection. We had to wear masks to enter his room. I'm sure he caught the flu there. Almost every room in the hospital has a flu patient and warning outside their door. We finally got shoveled out and now going to get 10"- 16" more. I think I will jump on the next plane to Florida.

This is a picture of our wharf and our boats grounded out for the storm. The first boat is a 35 ft Novi (Canadian Built) boat with dragging gear. My DH andDD own this boat together. The second boat is a 43 ft lobster boat built by DH. This boat is ours and named after our daughter.

TOOMANYUFO'S 01-29-2015 03:53 PM

The shamrocks are really cute.

klaws 01-29-2015 04:22 PM

Nice boats Dwina! You are welcome to come to Florida any time!!! :)

lawsonmugs 01-29-2015 05:02 PM

Pretty shamrocks. I think they would be great for the lapel or maybe on a tote bag. Dwina nice boats.

ctyankee 01-29-2015 05:50 PM

Dwina, what a great photo! Love the boats! Wish I lived in Maine ... it's our favorite place. Sorry to hear about your FIL. Those infections are nasty. Hope he rallies quickly so he can go home!

SewExtremeSeams 01-29-2015 05:55 PM

I am thinking more seriously about joining this month. You gals that are ready to 'mail' scare me. We haven't even reached the deadline date to sign up yet!!! :D :D :D

Patchesnposies 01-29-2015 06:04 PM

Dwina, thanks for sharing the photo of your boats. What an incredibly rugged and wonderful profession your family has chosen. Maine has always appealed to me. Alas, I am way too old to do anything about that now. Too old and tired to be rugged. lol

klaws 01-29-2015 07:07 PM

Linda you have to join in this month. Don't let the others scare you. There are a lot that hasn't even started yet...me being one! :p

quiltjoey 01-29-2015 07:44 PM

Lynnie, so glad you are on the mend. The flu have really been bad around here, also.
Dwina, so sorry to hear about your FIL. Hope he if beginning to feel better with meds and probably IVs. Your boat pic is beautiful but makes me shiver all over. It was 60 here today and 57 tomorrow and going down to 29 tomorrow night. I can't hardly deal with cold weather anymore. I, too, am too old and not rugged enough. Stay warm and well...

lynnie 01-29-2015 07:53 PM

Linda, some of us are just nuts and jump ahead. I for one would like to be 6 months aheadof time. I cme down with the flu this week. thank goodness, I was all ready for this month. don't let that worry you. please come join us. we're a good bunch of people here. very nice.

Dwina, sorry to hear about your fil, but I guess he' s where they can help him the most. love the boats. I'm impressed that your husband mad the boat. that's great that he can do things like that. he does the 'hard stuff' and you do the soft stuff. that's just terrific! glad we got to see the boats, and that they are safe too. more snow for us tonight and Monday.

JuneBillie 01-29-2015 08:53 PM

Dwina it is so interesting seeing those boats, and very impressive the boat your husband built.

Karen what is a feather tree? Cute shamrocks.

lawsonmugs 01-30-2015 07:02 AM

Linda, come and join in. You'll love it. I also haven't even decided what to make yet.

nhnative 01-30-2015 07:03 AM

Dwina those boats are really something and to think that your DH built one himself is very impressive. Just say NO to the snow that is coming. I got about 3" today and already went out to shovel and it's still snowing so I'll have to go back out when it stops. I hope that your FIL is feeling better. I swear when my DM was in the hospital that I got something like bronchitis that lasted 2 months. Those shamrocks are just too cute. I know that Clover has a lot of different shapes for the yoyos. I wanted a heart one but JA didn't have one. I guess I make my hexies different. I use the punch to cut out the shape on old envelopes and then I sew the fabric onto the paper. I like the thinner paper so it bends easier.
Everyone have a great day

klaws 01-30-2015 07:28 AM

I make my hexies like Pat does. I sew the fabric onto the paper. I've been using old file folders. If the fabric is glued to the paper, how do you take the paper out once you sew them together? I'm new at this so please forgive the stupid questions.

Karen, I am so glad that you asked this question. I was wondering about the whole paper thing. Was it for a template and then removed or just left. I know way back in the day women often used paper as part of the "batting" to help with insulation to make quilts warmer. Old newspaper, pages from books, etc....have been found in old quilts.

I didn't know if that is what was done here. I have never made hexies (yet!) and, honestly, have never goggled to find out the process. I will be awaiting an answer to your question.

klaws 01-30-2015 08:01 AM

I didn't know what to do so I watched a tutorial. The lady in the tutorial sewed the fabric to the paper. So that is how I've been doing it. Once she sewed the hexies together she iron and starched the piece front and back and then took the paper out of each hexie. How does everyone else do it? I sure would like to know.

nhnative 01-30-2015 08:42 AM

That is how I do them too except I don't starch them. It's a special kind of glue stick for quilting that you can remove the fabric from the shape. I had bought a kit to make the Lucy Boston blocks and you get the plastic templates, the cardboard shapes and you can put together all kinds of different designs. I tried one but I did not like glueing it to the stiff cardboard so I never finished them and that's why I make it from either copy paper or junk envelopes.

This is the only Lucy Boston block I made and it was with the cardboard shapes but I still sewed the fabric on. Then it was hard to bend them to sew them together

I can see how the process would make it difficult, but your block and the fabric choices are beautiful.

SewExtremeSeams 01-30-2015 09:14 AM

Pat, my hexie punch is in at Walmart, I just have to pick it up. But, we aren't going to town until Sunday so it will have to wait. Then, I will be joining the ranks of those who do hexies. :D

Klaws and Lynnie, I know you are a fun bunch. Mary and Karen, glad to know some have not even figured out what they are doing. I am in that basket.

This has been a techie week for me. So far I have installed a new security software and a new router, gotten most devices hooked up to it but cannot get my printer to print from a website. That is frustrating. Guess I will have to break down and call tech support 'cuz I can't live without printing from the net. Oh, I almost forgot... I will be switching from dish to directtv which always throws my routine off but the deal is too great to pass up. Sewing has sorta been on the back burner.:eek::eek:

TOOMANYUFO'S 01-30-2015 09:32 AM

I use freezer paper. You could punch them out, then iron them to the back side of your fabric, leaving a quarter inch space all around. After they are all iron on cut them out leaving a 1/4" excess for seam allowance ( you do not need to measure, just eye ball). Sew together, then remove papers. I leave the paper on the outside hexies and remove the inner papers. after the outside hexies are sewn their papers can be removed. I use a seam ripper to reach under the paper and pull them out. The papers can be reused about 4 times if you don't over press each time.

TOOMANYUFO'S 01-30-2015 09:44 AM

If you don't have a hexie punch, trace hexies onto a piece of paper, then run freezer paper thru your printer. You can buy precut freezer paper for your printer or just cut a piece the size of a piece of paper. You may want to roll the opposite way to flatten a bit before using in your printer. Make sure they are printed on the paper side and not the wax side. I like this method best, it sticks with no glue. If you don't have a printer just trace them onto the freezer paper.

I have decided to sign up. I have a good idea what I will be making, so that will help. My FIL is doing better. He can't stand or walk yet but they have him sitting up and he does't seem as confused. Thanks for the prayers. He still has a long road ahead.
