Sad to say but by bedtime last night we lost 5 of our 18 baby chicks. We're wondering if they had a turbulent flight. Hopefully the rest of them will survive.

Ms Grace 05-31-2012 07:29 AM

Oh Linda,
I'm so sorry for your loss.
:(Do you have a heat lamp on them? Out of any drafts?
Make sure they have plenty of fresh water.
If you have any questions, please pm me.

I did not think chickens could fly? :p

Thanks, ms. grace. Yes, we have heat lamps on them, they are in a room without drafts. DH has been giving them sugar water (recommended by hatchery). Even sadder is that we are now down to 8 chicks living. PTL, though, we haven't lost any for the past 3 hours, so things might be looking better. We only lost one of our 36 chicks that came 2.5 months ago. Sorry everyone for bringing this up. Didn't expect it to keep spiraling downward. But, maybe things will get better from here on out.

SheriR 05-31-2012 06:55 PM

That's so sad. Hubby and I feel bad for you. It would have been tragic to lose one of our babies when we got them. My daughter had to get them from the PO when they arrived as hubby and were out of town. Her three kids named them. So we have names like ChickSqueek and Chicklet and Nugget. THEN dear daughter bought her dad two ducks. So we have alot of quacking and cheeping going on!!!! Hope the rest of your babes survive. I'll be waiting to hear. <3

Linda,
If you have a Tractor Supply or some type of feed store near you, get them some Duramycin-10.
It's an antibiotic. I was told to use this the first week of a chick's life when we bought our first batch 3 years ago.
We haven't lost 1 yet.
The antibiotic is a powder that goes into their water. They really need it. I think it's around $7 here, and it's good for years.

Grace if I understood this we send four and get back four different ones. If we want one of that block we're suppose to make five. BTW. Those are SO CUTE!

Clever!! Go for it :D

QuilterMomma 06-06-2012 07:28 AM

Those are wonderful Ms. Grace, I will take one of those. Nothing like canned chicken to make the cold weather stay away or is that canned chicken soup and a cold. Hmmmmm sounds interesting.

HomespunHandmaiden 06-06-2012 07:29 AM

This (along with the fall swap that I've now joined) is my first time swapping! I'm so excited! I might do 3 sets...depends on how many I get done :)

QuilterMomma 06-06-2012 07:31 AM

Awesome Homespun. You are going to love your finished quilt with the chickens. I have so enjoyed the last one I swapped in and it was a beginning swap. You go girl.

Update on our chicks that arrived May 30th. In the first 24 hours we lost 8 of our 11 chicks and then, 3 more. :(However, the good news is that the remaining 7 are doing fine, growing like weeds and havin' fun. :) It must have been a turbulent jet flight to our town.

Great idea... canned chicken! DH's Mom used to can their elk meat so why not chicken?

rwquilts 06-06-2012 08:18 AM

MsGrace...love the jars! The lid fabric is also really clever! Your canned chicken looks a lot better than my canned meats! LOL!

We have white crowned black bantams, white silkies and a variety of others. Oh, the last photo is the girl showin' off her nails. :D:D She certainly doesn't need knox gelatin to make it long and strong. :D :D :D

Love your Bantys!! Have a storie about one we had on the farm as a kid: It was a White Male And he was Mean!! would attack you and jump on your head try to get your eyes, well my mom had told Him if He did it one more time She would 'Wring' his Neck, He jumped on my niece who was only 14 mo. she 'grabbed him and That was That!! LOL

QuilterMomma 06-06-2012 09:24 AM

I would have done the same. Wonder if his meat was tough and did she "cann" it?

Ms Grace 06-06-2012 09:48 AM

My blocks are done!

Here's what I decided to do.
These were lots of fun to make.
Hope to get them mailed tomorrow.:)

Lizzy is my newest "inspector". We adopted her on Sunday. She is 8 weeks old.

QuilterMomma 06-06-2012 09:51 AM

I want the last green one. she looks adorable and she may be jealous of all those other birds you have laying out there. So adorable. You are on a roll girl.

Ms Grace 06-06-2012 09:53 AM

She's actually not jealous of the other birds. She thinks she's "special" because she gets to live inside.
She loves to cuddle in your neck.

rwquilts 06-06-2012 10:04 AM

Your chicken blocks are so adorable Jean!

Ok, when I leave Quiltermomma's tomorrow. I'll drive to CA and start twisting.
What are we going to have for dinner when I get there???;)

Mariposa 06-06-2012 11:12 AM

Ms Grace- your blocks are terrific, and your bird is a cutie! :)

Fraew 06-06-2012 11:25 AM

@ Ms Grace: I would normally say "chicken" but with this group, I better reconsider. :D

:hunf::mad: Yes, how about a nice salad???

Annaquilts 06-06-2012 12:49 PM

The blocks are so cute! Aren't you tempted to keep them all. They look so nice together.
Just send the green Amazonian parrot to me. She doesn't fit in with all the chickens. LOL
She is really cute!!!!!!

LOL

Ms.Grace, I need some tips on machine embroidery. Someone (cough...cough...Fraew...) challenged me to actually utilize that function on my fancy machine...

SewExtremeSeams 06-06-2012 01:47 PM

Lizzy is beautiful, Ms Grace. You are really on a roll with your blocks.

Ahem...I resemble that remark! :)

BTW - that was a challenge for both of us fancy machine owners who haven't embroidered a single thing. When does class start?

QuilterMomma 06-07-2012 07:13 AM

I did not get a chance to pull out the chicken blocks I have stitched up already that are sitting in my UFO pile of blocks. Will try tonight.

Mariposa 06-07-2012 09:08 AM

QMomma- do we get to see pics-? ;)

QuilterMomma 06-07-2012 10:21 AM

When I can get them out of the orphan block pile and photo them.

QuilterMomma 06-07-2012 07:00 PM

Why is it when we don't need them they are right in our way and when we want to use them they run and hide. Ugh!!!!
