Oh my! :shock::shock::shock:

Sad to say but by bedtime last night we lost 5 of our 18 baby chicks. We're wondering if they had a turbulent flight. Hopefully the rest of them will survive.

Thanks, ms. grace. Yes, we have heat lamps on them, they are in a room without drafts. DH has been giving them sugar water (recommended by hatchery). Even sadder is that we are now down to 8 chicks living. PTL, though, we haven't lost any for the past 3 hours, so things might be looking better. We only lost one of our 36 chicks that came 2.5 months ago. Sorry everyone for bringing this up. Didn't expect it to keep spiraling downward. But, maybe things will get better from here on out.

That's so sad. Hubby and I feel bad for you. It would have been tragic to lose one of our babies when we got them. My daughter had to get them from the PO when they arrived as hubby and were out of town. Her three kids named them. So we have names like ChickSqueek and Chicklet and Nugget. THEN dear daughter bought her dad two ducks. So we have alot of quacking and cheeping going on!!!! Hope the rest of your babes survive. I'll be waiting to hear. <3

If you have a Tractor Supply or some type of feed store near you, get them some Duramycin-10.
It's an antibiotic. I was told to use this the first week of a chick's life when we bought our first batch 3 years ago.
We haven't lost 1 yet.
The antibiotic is a powder that goes into their water. They really need it. I think it's around $7 here, and it's good for years.

Those are wonderful Ms. Grace, I will take one of those. Nothing like canned chicken to make the cold weather stay away or is that canned chicken soup and a cold. Hmmmmm sounds interesting.

This (along with the fall swap that I've now joined) is my first time swapping! I'm so excited! I might do 3 sets...depends on how many I get done :)

Update on our chicks that arrived May 30th. In the first 24 hours we lost 8 of our 11 chicks and then, 3 more. :(However, the good news is that the remaining 7 are doing fine, growing like weeds and havin' fun. :) It must have been a turbulent jet flight to our town.

Great idea... canned chicken! DH's Mom used to can their elk meat so why not chicken?

Have a storie about one we had on the farm as a kid: It was a White Male And he was Mean!! would attack you and jump on your head try to get your eyes, well my mom had told Him if He did it one more time She would 'Wring' his Neck, He jumped on my niece who was only 14 mo. she 'grabbed him and That was That!! LOL

I would have done the same. Wonder if his meat was tough and did she "cann" it?

Lizzy is my newest "inspector". We adopted her on Sunday. She is 8 weeks old.

I want the last green one. she looks adorable and she may be jealous of all those other birds you have laying out there. So adorable. You are on a roll girl.

She's actually not jealous of the other birds. She thinks she's "special" because she gets to live inside.
She loves to cuddle in your neck.

Ms.Grace, I need some tips on machine embroidery. Someone (cough...cough...Fraew...) challenged me to actually utilize that function on my fancy machine...

When I can get them out of the orphan block pile and photo them.

Why is it when we don't need them they are right in our way and when we want to use them they run and hide. Ugh!!!!
