Funky Farm Blocks - Signups will be opened until Jan 19 2013

Blocks are to be made in sets of 6, If you want one of your own blocks please make an extra for yourself for I will be swapping out all your blocks.

You may make up to 6 (six) sets of 6 blocks each for a total of 36 blocks, which can give you enough blocks for a nice sized quilt. No duplicate sets without prior permission, and sets must be same design, but fabrics may vary.

Block sizes allowed will be anything from 3 1/2 inches unfinished (3” finished) to 15 1/2 inches unfinished(15” finished) and with any combination in between that’s measured in 3 inch increments. *** Please note that if you choose to send in a 3 1/2 inch x 3 1/2 inch block set, you MUST send in 12 blocks to makeup one set and may only send in one set of those to keep things fair to others sending in larger blocks. These will be exchanged 2 for 1. This give you a lot of flexibility in choosing your blocks… As long as you stick to the 3 inch increment rule and don’t go larger than 15 1/2 inches or smaller than 3 1/2 inches, you’re good!

All skill levels are invited to participate. We do require that you use good 100% sturdy cotton fabrics & appropriate threads that will withstand repeated washing.

Blocks will be funky farm themed with all the wonderful things that we associate with the farm. Please keep your backgrounds NEUTRAL. In other words, please do NOT make busy backgrounds…let’s keep these neutral so it’s easier to put the blocks together. Day or night neutral fabrics for backgrounds are also good.

All block styles and methods are encouraged! Machine embroidery, hand embroidery, traditional pieced, paper pieced and both machine and hand appliqué (if you choose to do appliqué, you MUST sew your appliqué down by some method that looks appropriate and please do NOT use monofilament thread to do this). A variety of methods and colors will make for a fun sampler style finished quilt! I also ask that whatever method you choose to make, please do your best work and make something that you would want to have,so use colors and themes that you are proud to send in and will be happy to get back?

Make sure all blocks are labeled with your user name and real name if you wish, and that they have no holes or tears or have too small of seam allowances that would make them unfit to swap, and that they are the size they are supposed to be, in other words, 6 1/2 inch means 6 1/2 inch, not 6 3/8 inches, etc.

Signups will be opened until Jan 19 2013, and blocks must be in my possession by Jan 30 2013, 2013 Blocks received after that date will be returned to you unswapped. I will swap them out and get them back in the mail to you by the following week. Please pm me to sign up and give me an idea of the number of block sets you will be making and sending in.

Postage details. Please include a self addressed label along with stamps or money to cover return postage to you. If you want delivery confirmation, please-include that as well. I will be mailing these back in padded priority mailers and the cost is 5.30 for those.

Let’s have fun,and of course you have to follow all the basic rules, found here.

I know this is a lot of information, but it will help us to have a really smooth swap! I look forward to seeing what you come up with and please, please, post your blocks and ideas as you’re making them! We all love to get inspiration and motivation from each other! I hope some of my paper piecing friends will join me as we branch out and include many other methods of sewing our blocks together and hope to make many more new friends and welcome old friends alike!!

owlvamp 10-15-2012 10:47 AM

Thank you I guess when I did this I was thinking of the snowmen blocks I was making for the winter swap. Sorry about this.

RedGarnet222 10-18-2012 01:43 PM

I think this would be fun to join! Let me look around and see if I have the right things to join owlvamp.

owlvamp 10-19-2012 05:01 AM

You look and find ! Come join us you have lots of time to get blocks done.

Belfrybat 10-27-2012 07:31 PM

OK -- I'm in. I have some John Deer fabric and found some great farm animal fabric the other day that I couldn't pass up and now I know why! I will commit to 2 sets, and perhaps 3 depending on whether I can find some other farm fabric.

owlvamp 10-27-2012 08:43 PM

I have you down for 2 sets Belfrybat. Welcome and so excited to see what you come up with.

queenof2802 10-30-2012 08:48 AM

I am going to look through my stash tonight for farm fabric. I know I have some in one of the tubs as I did a farm quilt for my husband several years ago. Thinking about doing this one, will let you know tonight if so and how many sets I can do.

owlvamp 10-30-2012 10:19 AM

6 sets with 6 blocks in each set. Look forward to hearing back from you.

Judith1005 11-05-2012 02:09 PM

owlvamp, am thinking hard about this swap. I was just blessed with a new grandson. And this would be a fabulous gift for him. I have a very busy November. But, if I can clear up my obligations, I am going to whip out a few sets for this swap. I will firm up with you in December on joining. I have seen past swaps...these are so cute and imaginative.

I'm so glad there's lots of time before the close date.:)

urgodschild2 11-05-2012 08:10 PM

Does this mean funky animals like cows, pigs, horses, chickens as well as tractors, farm equipment and farmers?????????

owlvamp 11-05-2012 08:52 PM

Yes all of those. Whatever you find on a farm goes with this. Just have fun and be creative.

urgodschild2 11-05-2012 09:24 PM

Ok I am leaving for Australia for a month and when I come back I will make up 6 sets.

owlvamp 11-06-2012 02:54 PM

Welcome happy to have you a board. Have a wonderful trip!

Belfrybat 11-21-2012 05:28 AM

Just checking. Looks like just three players? Hope more sign up!

owlvamp 11-21-2012 11:52 PM

Actually have 5 so far. It's still early in the game . Dead line is still a while away.

owlvamp 11-26-2012 09:42 PM

I hope more come and sign up too! A few people are worried about no one signing up. Spread the word and see if your friends will come join. We still have a while before the dead line. So there is still hope to all those who are worrying.

I received some farm fabric in so will start working on my blocks and will pictures as soon as I get them done.

Annaquilts 11-29-2012 03:24 PM

Did anyone make blocks for this swap yet? If so could you post them? I am thinking about joining but I am not sure yet. I need to look through fabrics and see how it all works in time wise.

lynnie 11-29-2012 03:30 PM

I keep coming here looking for pics. Come on quilters, show me somepics please. Did mine last year. I put a 24" x 24" barn in the ctr. Whith a chicken inthe top window. Used that hairy yarn and made her a nest and i also crocheted a haystack. Had a tractor and a white fence for aborder, sun and clous on corners and in the bottom corners a cat chasing a mouse ( they both had attitudes).
so......show me somepics please.

owlvamp 11-29-2012 03:38 PM

I am working on some hope will show some pics soon. I need more to sign up. Come and sign up with us. lynnie you make awesome blocks come join the fun. :)

Annaquilts 11-29-2012 03:40 PM

I just realized the closing date is Jan. 19 that might be too soon for me. I have some basic ideas for two sets.

owlvamp 11-29-2012 03:48 PM

Closing date is December 29, 2012 and the blocks need to be to me by Jan. 19, 2013.. Now if there seems to be a major problem for this for many of you and this is the reason your not signing up I'm sure we can changed the dates some. Please let me know.

Annaquilts 12-02-2012 12:35 PM

Let me see how many I can get made by the 29 th. It is just Christmas is smack in there and I am way bussy because I have a large family. If there would be two extra weeks it would help a lot.

urgodschild2 12-02-2012 06:03 PM

Lynnie, I want to see a picture of yours that you did. I just got back from down under and later this week will work on my blocks for this swap. Yep, I am totally in. I have some ideas swirling in my head and they just have to get out. I am also going
to try to learn how to use my embroidery machine. (Hanging my head as I have owned my bernina embroidery machine for about 5 years and I have never used it.) Time to play. As soon as my body knows when it is daytime and nighttime for real, I will get cracking.

owlvamp 12-02-2012 08:03 PM

Awesome ladies for everyone that signed up do you a pose to two more weeks. How about the dead line for joining be Jan. 19th and all blocks to me by Jan. 30th.? What do you all think I can ask the moderator to change dates. It would give us all more time to create after the holidays. Let me know what you, think.

Annaquilts 12-02-2012 09:37 PM

Sandra that would work for me but only if that is alright with everyone that signed up already.

Belfrybat 12-03-2012 12:03 PM

YES! To date change. That way I can commit to 4 sets. Plus I think more people will be apt to join after Christmas.

urgodschild2 12-03-2012 12:46 PM

Fine with me.

owlvamp 12-03-2012 09:37 PM

Ok I will see if the moderator will change dates then. It will also give me more time now as well. So happy sewing everyone and put those thinking caps on and start showing pictures when you get your blocks finished.

owlvamp 12-04-2012 09:11 AM

Ok it is done. Sign up date is changed!

Judith1005 12-04-2012 03:42 PM

I'm in on a new change date. I'll commit to two sets to start with. (I just had so much going on that I needed to finish first.) I really want in on this swap. Thanks for compromising on the "Must be to me by " date.

owlvamp 12-04-2012 08:37 PM

Welcome Judith1005! Hope you have and share your blocks when finished. :)

queenof2802 12-05-2012 04:37 PM

Sorry I have not gotten back with you til now. I lost my job the first part of November and was swamped with looking for a new job, Thanksgiving and other commitments.

I would like to sign up for 2 sets. The extra two weeks was a deciding factor

owlvamp 12-05-2012 05:25 PM

Awesome and welcome. Glad the two weeks helped. Sorry to hear you lost your job though. I do hope you found another one and things are settling down there. I put you down for the 2 sets.

queenof2802 12-06-2012 01:32 PM

I start my new job on Tuesday!! Yay, I can breathe now.

Pick out one of the block patterns today while at the VA Eye Clinic with my dad. Gonna look through some patterns/books this evening for the second.

I have several things going on this month. BOM, dolls clothes for my neice, no sew blanket for DS girlfriend and a mystery lap quilt.

owlvamp 12-06-2012 09:15 PM

Awesome cant wait to see what you come up with. I happy you found a job too !

I know what you mean I have been extremely busy myself. I also have a few block ideas just haven't had time to work on them. I made 7 tie blankets and have a few more to go. Then going to sew a few. I just made two scarf's tonight with the red heart swerve yarn. It's really cool.

owlvamp 12-09-2012 07:31 PM

not sure about delivery confirmation but will call post office and ask and post it in the next few days.

Belfrybat 12-11-2012 12:30 PM

If you will do the postage on-line, you'll save between 30 - 50 cents plus delivery confirmation is free. I rarely buy postage at the Post Office any more -- doing it on-line is both easier and cheaper. If you do go to the Post Office, consider sending them by First Class Parcel -- you'll save about $1.50.

owlvamp 12-11-2012 03:51 PM

Ok didn't know all that. I never did postage on line always went to the post office. It's just a few blocks away but will look into . Thank you for the info.

urgodschild2 12-12-2012 09:15 PM

OK. I got all my manuals out for my embroidery machine. Set up the computer, the disc thingy and the module that goes with it. But I spent all day trying to figure it out. Tried to get the tutorial to work and that wasn't going. Tried to look at the installation...that loaded but then I got some other kind of error. I am sure that it is not this hard to do. Now I can't find that hoop that goes with it. I can see it in my mind's eye but can't place where I saw it. So I have quit for the day. Tomorrow I will start again and see what happens.
