I was wondering if there would be any interest in an I Spy Charm Square swap? If we could get 30-40 participants, we'd have quite a few different prints (90 or 120) to use in I Spy quilts or other projects.

Here are some rough details.

Purchase (or raid your stash) three different I Spy fabrics (a yard should do it depending on how many participants we have). Cut 40 (forty) 5 inch squares out of each of the three different fabrics. The 40 is just if we have 40 participants. If we have 30 swappers, you would cut 30 squares.

You will mail the squares to me and include an envelope with stamps on it to be mailed back to you. I'll sort all the squares and send them back to you. If you are overseas, I can accept PayPal payments for return postage.

If you think you would be interested can you respond to this thread or PM me?

I sent you a PM!! :D

DA Mayer 09-26-2009 02:46 PM

what is considered I Spy fabric?

Chele 09-26-2009 03:00 PM

I Spy fabric is a novelty print with an all over design of something graphic. Like foods, animals, objects, etc. I Spy quilts are popular for babies and children as they can point out (or find) specific items.

Some prints that come to mind: strawberries, cherries, cats, dogs, zoo animals, noodles (yep, I have noodle fabric!), shoes, cupcakes, etc.

Can anyone else elaborate on novelty prints?

DA Mayer 09-26-2009 03:01 PM

All right! I have lots of that, count me in.

burnsk 09-26-2009 03:20 PM

What a great idea. Count me in, too.

I would like to join when would the deadline be?

Chele 09-26-2009 05:32 PM

I'm thinking end of October for mailing deadline. I'm flexible though. Just checking to see the interest first. It really won't work unless we have quite a few participants. Thanks to those that have responded!

STAR 09-26-2009 06:39 PM

I am intersted but have quite a few things going that the deadline is end of oct. if no one is in to much a hurry could we do like nov. 15th? just wondering ,

I was kind of wondering the same thing!! Everything seems to be due the middle to end of October right now! I would join in if the date was in November too!

Chele 09-26-2009 07:10 PM

Middle or end of November is good with me. I'm in no hurry. I just want to gather 30 or so of us!

amma 09-26-2009 08:13 PM

Please count me in on this swap Chele!!! I have been collecting for a while on my own, this would be a great boost to that stash :D :D :D

oksewglad 09-26-2009 09:14 PM

Sounds like a fun thing  . I can raid my stash--5 inches you say? Keep us posted

Would all of the squares we send have to be from the same fabric or can we send a variety, I have some in my stash but just small pieces as I was saving to do this too.

bj 09-27-2009 05:51 AM

So, we send you 40 squares of the same fabric. You divvy it up and send us back 40 different squares? If so, I'll play. I love collecting I Spy fabs.

mgrhs 09-27-2009 05:57 AM

I'm in if the mailing date is in November.

Chele 09-27-2009 06:05 AM

Actually, you'll have three different fabrics of which you'll cut 40 squares from each for a total of 120 squares. That's if we have 40 participants. If we have 20 participants, you would cut 20 squares from each of your three fabrics for a total of 60 squares. You will receive as many squares as you send and they will all be different prints.

I hope that is clearer. Let me know if it's not. :D

bearisgray 09-27-2009 06:06 AM

When cutting up I Spy type fabrics, it's really nice to have the pieces "fussy cut" so that the design is at it's best.

Not all novelty prints cut up equally well into five-inch squares, so doing an "audition" of the fabric is a good thing before committing to it.

bj 09-27-2009 06:07 AM

Ok. I'm in.

Excellent advice, bearisgray! I try to choose smaller scale, all-over prints to avoid fussy cuts. Here are some examples.

I would participate...sounds like a lot of work for you Chele!!! Thanks for organizing. Is this the sign up or still a "feeler' posting?

mamatobugboo 09-27-2009 08:25 AM

I'm interested....but not committing quite yet! Depends on when the "deadline" is!

Up North 09-27-2009 08:26 AM

I will think on this for a couple days, at least until I can get to the store and see what they have.

Chele 09-27-2009 08:52 AM

I think we're going to have enough people to make this worthwhile! So here are more details:

1. Three different I Spy fabrics cut to 5" x 5" squares. The total of squares you'll need from each fabric will depend on how many people sign up. I'll have that information October 17. I'm hoping we get 40 participants, so you would cut 40 squares from each of your three fabrics. One square for each participant.

2. Deadline to sign up for this swap is October 16. If we get 40 before the sign up date, I will close the swap. Forty will be the maximum. The mailing date for your squares to me is November 20. You can start cutting now if you have the fabrics on hand.

Let me know if I left something out. Now go tell your friends and have them join us! :D And thanks for playing!

STAR 09-27-2009 09:02 AM

That sounds GREAT Chele!! I am in for sure!!

Thanx for hosting what will be another great swap idea!

mgrhs 09-27-2009 12:31 PM

I just got back from the store and found three fabrics that I think will work....just waiting to hear how many I need to cut

mamatobugboo 09-27-2009 01:36 PM

would you prefer PM sign up info or reply to this thread?

bearisgray 09-27-2009 02:12 PM

Do you want the fabrics washed before cutting?

(My preference is pre-washed)

Chele 09-27-2009 03:56 PM

Let's pre-wash. I'm not a pre-washer usually, but it probably can't hurt! You can reply to this thread or a PM. I'm easy! I'd really like some more swappers, so c'mon down! Won't it be fun to get 120 different I Spy charm squares? I need 40 people, people! But even if it's just us 20 or so, it will still be lots of fun!

wvdek 09-27-2009 09:45 PM

Count me in. Was going to make one anyway for a family friend due in Feb. with a boy. Great way to get it going.

Demshine 09-28-2009 05:19 AM

Perfect! Count me in! I am going to be a first time Grandmother in May, so your timing for this is perfect!

Thanks for organizing this too!

mamatobugboo 09-28-2009 05:28 AM

Count me in! I have the best fabric to use and can't wait to get started!

You might want to edit the title of the thread to make it a definite swap!

Dancing Needle 09-28-2009 08:13 AM

I'll join in! I've been planning an I Spy quilt for my best friends son and daughter-in-law who are due in February, and I just found out today that my niece is expecting. Perfect timing for me!

bearisgray 09-28-2009 08:19 AM

Please include me in this swap.

Just wondering - in the other swaps the sender also gets one of his/her own blocks back - I think it would be easier to do that for this, too.

That way all the stacks should have exactly the same squares in it.

Say there are 40 participants - everyone send in 40 squares - I get one of mine back and 39 different ones.

But maybe that's what you said/meant and I didn't get it.
