July to September 2017 Table Runner Swap
Hi Guys,
Welcome to our ongoing Table Runner Swap! This one will run from the beginning of July to the 30th September 2017. You have until the end of September to make a table runner - the theme this time is... Fall. Size of Table Runner The table runner should be a minimum of 12” x 30”. You can use any technique/ any style. All fabrics used should be 100% cotton. The runner must have wadding and be quilted. Sign Up list There is no deadline so you can sign up at any time during the 3 months as this will be just an intention to participate. When you have made and are ready to mail your runner you can then sign up to the “ready to mail” list which is binding commitment. But please remember that the only list that counts is the Ready to Mail list at the end of September 2017. Ready to Mail list An initial Ready to Mail list will be posted around the 24th September 2017. If you are not on this list you will not get an address to send to unless you contact me and get on the final listing. Midnight on the 30th September 2017 – is the deadline to get on the “Ready to Mail” list I will need: Real name Your address Whether you are willing to send international or not (Please consider this as it enables everybody to take part) Allergy info Pet and smoking information Email address As long as you have a table runner ready to mail by the deadline you can join us any time! Addresses Sent Out: I will send out the name and address of the person you should send to on the 1st or 2nd October 2017. You will have 7 days to get your table runner in the mail - No Longer. If you are unable to keep this commitment - please do not sign up. You will send your table runner to the quilter who's address you get. You will receive from a different quilter than the one you send to. This is not a partner swap. Please note that there are quilters of all abilities on this board and you should appreciate the table runner you receive as your sender will have worked hard to make it for you. You are welcome to send some goodies in your package if you would care to, but please don't expect anything other than the table runner. Please Note.... You must let me know when you mail and when you receive. Also, please PM the person that sends to you when you receive to say thank you and to let them know that the table runner that they have sent you has arrived - it is only polite to do so! So come and join our fun. Hugs Caroline |

Go right ahead m-fay. It is a free pattern. A great one for using scraps.

I forgot to say that my runner is from Caroline, thanks again.
I have been playing with the HCB pattern and here is my first idea using it. partially finished, blocks made, sashing not sewn yet. peace |
I'm in too! the HCB pattern looks interesting! I'm leaning toward paper piecing or pineapple blocks? Of course, I'll probably change my mind 3-4 times! lol
|
I'm in for a fall runner. Will send info to Caroline post haste.
|
Well I was looking at fabrics and thought I might go with a little hand embroidery with some fall fabrics.
|
I love to make pineapple blocks. They are always interesting whether they are scrappy or in an organized pattern.
|
I too think it is a really pretty block. I never have made one for some reason.
|
Today I've been playing with scraps. I practised the hot cross pattern on the mauve pieces, and decided against it, so I used my Autumn colours.and decided against that one too, hopefully I'll like my 3rd attempt. Also I looked up a tutorial for machine stitching bindings on. Is there a reason we hand sew them on? The tutorial looked pretty good to me.

I don't know why only half the photo came thru, meg, my dog had to lay next to it...with me ever step of the way.

I tried binding on my machine and could never get it to look good. Unless your binding is perfect the stitching can miss its mark on the back side of the quilt. It also will ripple and when going around the corners the machine can get stuck on the thickness. Some people can do it beautifully, not me.
There are so many reasons for being unsuccessful. working too fast wrong thread or needle cheap fabric for binding not enough quilting near the quilt edge to stabilize it and prevent it from shifting. This is my biggest discovery over the years. I am going to try it again by combining Elmers Washable School Glue to hold the binding in place and prevent shifting, then sew it with machine. There is a big difference in working on a little sample piece and shifting around a big quilt under that little needle, it is not as easy as it looks. A big quilt needs lots of support and focus on feeding it through the machine evenly |
Your sample runners are interesting m-fay. The purple blocks are very nice. They look like pretty packages waiting to be opened. The string blocks are cool, like a glass window.
|
I will join too! I participated in the Christmas/Winter swap last year and really enjoyed it :-)
|
I started sewing on 1 today, changed my mind, then another, and the 3rd one I think will be the one. I have to put it all together but I m sure this will be the final. Tomorrow will be the day to know for sure...
|
Hi ekuw, welcome back. What a nice bunch of players we have.

There is an update on my HCB runner and I want to share it with you!
So I accomplished three things on this runner, it represents autumn and I used two of the things celebrated in September, Hot Cross Buns and Butterscotch. This is a keeper and will be in the swap!:D |
Wow really pretty.
|
i'm in, working on a cute applique/embroidery idea. Still in the designing stage, but it's looking good. Will post soon.
|
Holy smokes! You guys are eager beavers! I haven't decided for sure what I'm going to do for the next runner and I'm seeing 3rd options! lol
Just wanted to comment on the machine binding: I add the binding by machine on all of my quilts etc now. However, when I attach to the quilt, I sew the binding to the BACK of the quilt sandwich, then it's wrapped around to the right side of the quilt. My machine has many decorative stitches, so I choose one & play with it, until it provides good coverage of the binding & also secures the corners as I go around the quilt. The quilts stand up much better to multiple washings etc. As I go around, the binding is secured well with pinning in short sections so there is no movement or rippling. Works for me! |
Welcome to the swap pndnana. Glad you are joining in. Love to see what everyone is doing.
|
That is a real good Idea Sue. A have a few good decorative stitches that might just work. Going from back to front will be a great help in making it look good. Anxious to give it a try. You are marvelous! I will do a practice square and see how it goes.

I have finally received Lawsonmugs table runner Really lovely summer one and I love the shape so different to one I thought I would receive. Also a purse tissue holder which will come in handy . Thankyou Mary

I love it R-sea, The crowded beach and the ocean ,...a very hot summers day! Beautiful!
|
R-sea, a wonderful summer fun runner, Lawsonmugs did a perfect theme. Love that beach fabric. Worth the wait.
|
I'm so glad you finally received it. Whew it was a long time holding my breath waiting. lol. I'm sorry it took so long to get to you. Hope you enjoy it and think good thoughts when you look at it. Hugs Mary

Thanks Ube! Your runner is really nice! I love those stars; I tried to make a runner with a similar star block a while back and had a hard time matching things up so I gave up...I just finished the quilting on my runner last night. I have been enamored of the "baptist fan" quilting motif. I's kind of been my "white whale" of quilting designs, so my runner is a simple pattern, but not so simple quilting. It's turning out pretty well :-)
|
ekuw, without the EWSGlue I would never be able to do these small stars. I used a very thin line of glue on the back side of the triangle near the creased sewing line, It holds the triangle perfectly while you sew.
|
Lovely runners -- both the summer ones and the fall ones. I wanted to add my 2 cents into the binding conversation. I never, ever bind by hand. I'm a machine person only. Attach binding to the back, fold to front and stitch down. I haven't done it, but if I wanted to make it fancy, I'd use a flange. I was told that even the quilt police at quilt shows are accepting machine binding now, especially those with the flange.
Here's a short tute on making binding with a flange: https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q...3D2E&FORM=VIRE |
As a judge in many county fairs for the State of Wyoming, I can tell you that the recommended binding is sewn by hand. If you have a flange, it is permissible to machine sew it. The thing they look for is on the back. Sewn straight and even, so it is as if you were sewing in the ditch. That is some of the rules we have to follow. I most always hand sew my bindings on, but I like doing it. Just a thought if you are entering a quilt ....

I'm having trouble deciding. I purchased a new Triangle Frenzy pattern I'm dying to make with a gorgeous Jenny Beyer fabric, but also pulled some lovely fall batiks. Decisions, decisions.
 |
Those are some gorgeous fabrics.
|
Your runner is just perfect, Ube, and the stars just make it more so! I guess autumn colours have to be my favourites. I just bought a glue stick and I think I'll be using it a lot!
Belfrybat. Thanks for that URL . I watched it and saved it to try at a later date. Your triangle frenzie will look good in those fabrics, Cant wait to see it. Jaba, Thanks for that advice..I will continue to hand sew....( Maybe I will try at least 1 machine done) |
Oh belfrybat, both choices would be wonderful. I have a fabric very similar to the Jenny Beyer. It might be the same. I like that flange idea too. So many things to try, woohoo!
ekuw, I also like the baptist fan. It makes almost any quilt look good. Jaba, how do you become a judge? curious |
Hello, I have a question.
What is the average length of most of your table runners? |
Linda, Mine have averaged around 40- 42" long and 12" or a bit wider depending on how wide a border I might add. I mostly make them long because I get such pleasure playing with the blocks. The rules state at least 30" long as the lower limit for length and I have received all different lengths and they are all wonderful.
|
Another idea has popped into my brain so of course, here I go again!:D
|
Ladies, I love reading the advice here and seeing the beautiful table runners. I would like to join. I plan to make a table runner with fall foliage done with machine embroidery.
|
That sounds really good SandyFeet. Welcome.
