What day armylady? I'm 21st.

I'm on the 13th and this year it is on a Tuesday, I have to be skeptical when it falls on a Friday. I have had some weird Birthdays when that happened.

Welcome lovngrandma and j50. Could you share a little about yourselves? I live fulltime in our fifth wheel trailer. Spending the summer on eastern end of Long Island to be closer to my mom and
Grandchildren. |
what a great idea travelinggramma, why don't we all share a short bio about ourselves.
I live 20 min north of Boston, MA, about 10 min from Salem, MA, home of the witch trials and nathaniel hawthorne. Lots of history there. I monitor traffic cameras for red light and speed violations and issue tickets; about 300 each shift. my accounts are cedar rapids iowa, orlando florida area and illinois. I am a quilter but mostly I enjoy making small things like postcards and mini quilts. |
do you go to an office to work? or can it be done from home? I love learning about all the jobs people do or have done. When we went on the road, we have picked up seasonal jobs. I say that I can do most anything for a season. Worked for Amazon fulfillment center, campground hosts, accounting clerk, reformatting information onto excel worksheets, museum work, and volunteering for American Red Cross Disasters etc/

I am sure that some of you have figured out by my board name that I have served in the military. I served almost 25 years and finally retired in 2012, I then moved to Brandon, Fl where my brother was living and that is where I stated sewing, my sister-in-law Mildred who also is a member on the board (nana20010) got me started. I did a lot of different things while serving I went to Desert Storm and was on my way again in 2008 when they found medical issues which made me non-deployable but I still served in Ft. Gordon, GA at the Medical Hold Center.
while in I was a Truck driver, forklift operator, fueler, administration, armor and had a lot of additional duties. I miss serving my country but not all the BS that it entails. I have a daughter and 3 grandkids (2 boys Dakarai 9, Amari 5) and my granddaughter Analise is 2. They keep me busy especially since they all live with me. |
I'm in again this month!

Let's see, short bio...
I have wanted to learn to hand quilt for years, so that I could complete a quilt with a top my Great Grandfather made (he made hundreds of tops and would drop them off with "the church ladies" so they could quilt them and donate them, but a top was set aside for each of us great-grandkids). I found out the Senior Center had a group that meets every Monday, so I stopped by to visit with them last summer, and now I'm the only under-40 "member" (our oldest turned 100 in November). I have a son who is attending community college this year and working part time (to help pay for college). Up until two years ago I worked as a maintenance electrician, but due to a horrible environment, I moved on to a much better career at a new location (still "field work", still the only female, but a great crew, and lots of downtime where I can quilt/sew/crochet/read/etc). I now work 12 hour rotating shifts, but I really like my schedule and the job, I don't think I could ask for a better one. Along with the quilting hobby, I enjoy woodworking, photography, baking, travel, and a bunch of other stuff. I hope to move "into the woods" soon, just need the house built (I live in the PNW, Oregon now, but property is in Washington). After I'm done helping my son with college, I hope to visit at least one country a year (I've been to 13 so far). When I'm retired and done with the hassle of foreign travel (long flights, language barrier, etc), I hope to get a dog and a camper/small rv/camper van and travel the states. |

Now that I am a 'lady of leisure' - retired - I've found this quilting/sewing hobby to be 'sew fascinating' & a never-ending puzzle, in a good way. I spent my college years in fine arts. I spent my career in emergency communications for San Francisco. I bake and cook and like a challenge, I live on an island. We're about 6 feet above sea level: my garden will have standing water in the winter after a heavy rain, so I pretend I live on the Nile - everything grows. We finally had a non-drought year this winter. 2 DDs, of course they are everything to me; one lives near, one lives in Brooklyn, so I go to NY every year. I write for fun and (so far) no profit. I am making my first quilt. It's slow going - wish I had started up quilting years ago!
|
I'm in again too!!! Lots of neat ideas bouncing around this time!!
|
And a little about me:
I'm retired as of June 30th of 2016. (yeah!!) I started my career upon graduating from Arizona State, working at the university libraries (grunt work). From there, I graduated to a job with the local Community College district, and over the next 30+ years I worked at several different college campuses pretty much doing what I did best for the college libraries. Last position was as an operations manager at the one college where distance learning was the main focus. By this time, the libraries were mostly delivering information electronically (at least at my location), so we had very little foot traffic and less work as time went on. I think I retired out of sheer boredom! I haven't looked back either. Yep, happy to be FREE!! Now I spend my days piddling around with my container garden & sunflowers, and sewing wonderful things for craft shows. Currently I've been making all manner of aprons, infinity scarves, and I have Christmas stockings and other various bags and such on the agenda too. It keeps me busy and creative! But I don't want to neglect my quilting, so I keep my finger on the pulse of the QB and join various swaps. The pile of UFOs or stuff not yet touched is astronomical, but that doesn't deter me in the least!! It's all sewing and all fun every day!! Oh yes, I live in the great southwest desert of Arizona where we have rain so infrequently that it's like a major holiday when the wet stuff falls from the sky! P.S. I'm addicted to watching HGTV and DIY -- mostly the reno shows and tiny house living. How can those people give up so much "stuff"??? (read, my fabric stash and multiple sewing machines??!!!!) |
love all the bio's of everyone. very interesting.

MizMelly, when you get rid of all the stuff ,fine China , glassware, etc you have room for fabric. I currently have three machines and an overflowing stash (and projects). I make room in our home on wheels!! Quilting is my therapy!
|
Please add me to the list for June. Nice to meet new and fellow post card swappers and quilters

I am back in this month :-)
Let's see a short bio... I live a in suburb of Houston, Tx and one of the few that don't mind the really hot weather..don't get me wrong I really don't enjoy 100's but I will take it over anything less than 70 any time :-) I am slowly moving into the second phase of my life now that my 4 kids are in college and moving out. I'm dog obsessed...I have 8. I enjoy quilting, baking, photography and my newest obsession is making tshirts and decals :-) I play video games and I'm not much of a reader. And as far as I'm concerned purple is the best color in the world :-) |
MizMelly I know where Mesa, AZ is and I bet you know where Marana, AZ is I called it home for 11 years. I worked at the National Guard Unit (WAATS) and I use to go to Papago in Phoenix all the time. Yes getting rain was a reason to jump for joy.
|
We were jumping for joy here in CA all winter - torrents of rain, now the rivers are rushing, lots of slides due to saturated ground. Hwy 1 is closed in several points along Big Sur. Sort of wish I was trapped in Big Sur with the locals. I have spent many a wonderful time there through the years.
|
Ah, Marana! North of Tucson and south of Casa Grande! Yep, I buzz by Marana every time I head south!
Sigh. We are in the dry season now, no rain until MAYBE July if the monsoon smiles on us this year!

Happy to see that we are getting more new swappers :) Hope some more of the "old" ones can come back when they are less busy!
|
I was ambitious this week and have my June card done already. I hope whomever gets it likes "silly" (or should I say overly creative?) postcards!
|
travelinggramma - I hear you about the fine china, glassware, even the amount of heirlooms - they are getting to me.
It is wonderful to hear a backstory from everyone. All different, with one (or more) love of quilting/creation. |
I'm reducing my inventory ..........crafts, collectibles and stuff. In addition to quilting/sewing, I did counted cross stitch, knit, iris folding cards......dabbled with basket making.. Therefore I have acquired books, patterns, supplies and UFO......I also have collection like most. I like primatives too..........I like to cook and read........actually I should say I'm learning to cook better. Thanks to the cooking channel and some FB groups. I also enjoy my yard, flowers and some herbs........I still willing to learn new things. I live in Michigan so have 4 seasons. I'm not a computer geek, as long as the computer works I'm ok, but if it doesn't I'm sunk. I hope to try making jelly don't laugh, sounds complicated........Calla/(short for calla lily)/ Sue
Oh I like paper piecing too and machine embroidery |
