May 2012 doll quilt swap - theme: Quilty chaos - crazy quilt - deadline noon est 4/30

Sign up time for the Quilting Board's 33rd Doll Quilt Swap!

Everyone is welcome to join us no matter what your skill level may be. Making and sharing doll quilts offers a wonderful opportunity to try new techniques, use up scraps in your stash – or an excuse to buy new fabric – and it’s a great way to make new quilty friends.

Here are the details. I know they are long and boring, but please read them.
(There might be a quiz ;))

Doll Quilt Swap #33 – May 2012

Theme: Quilty ChaosIt’s time to throw the rules out the window. This month you are challenged to make a crazy quilt or to use a traditional pattern turned on its ear. It can be wonky, whacky, or weird. Embellish to your heart’s content. The choice is yours. You will find some inspiration in the post at our Group Home.
I know that many of our members are very structured and might not be up for this one. As always, the theme is optional, but if it's not for you, please let your partner know.

DEADLINES:
SIGN UP: Easy As 1-2-3
1. To join the fun, just send me a PM no later than NOON (EST) on April 30, 2012.
2. Please let me know whether you are able to swap internationally as we have a few members who are outside the USA.
3. Let me know you have read the guidelines and make sure your QB mailbox isn’t full.

Partner Assignment: Partners will be assigned on May 1st. Find your partner at our Group Home here

Mailing Deadline: You must have your quilt in the mail no later than May 31[SUP]st[/SUP]. If you do not think you can meet that deadline, you might want to wait a month or two until your schedule frees up and you don’t feel pressured.

DOLL QUILT SWAP GUIDELINES

SIZE:
Doll quilts can be between 12”x12” to 24”x24” or any size or shape in between. If your finished quilt measures 24" x 26", or 11" x 13" it's fine. No worries or excessive rules for this swap.

MATERIALS: Most participants use cotton, but you can use any other natural fiber like wool, linen or silk.

EMBELLISHMENTS: Let your creativity rule. Add beads, buttons, ribbon, lace, rickrack, or whatever if you feel like it. Or add nothing at all. It’s up to you.

CONSTRUCTION: Pick your technique. Doll quilts may be pieced, appliquéd, wholecloth, quilted by hand or quilted by machine. All quilts should have binding.

LABEL: Please add a label or sign your quilt on the back with your name and the date. It is a wonderful record of your work and years from now, it will help your partner remember who made this magnificent work of art! If your quilt is reversible and you don’t want to sign it, please include a card or attach a removable tag with your Quilting Board name or real name if different.

MANNERS: Don’t for get to thank your partner. A simple post on the thread for the month is terrific, but a PM is nicer still. Please leave feedback for your partner.

HELP YOUR HOSTESS KEEP TRACK: When you mail off your quilt, please send me a PM. Also send one when you receive a quilt you’re your partner. This will help me keep track and to ensure that everyone receives a quilt. Once your partner has received your quilt, I will leave positive feedback for you.

PHOTOS: At the Quilting Board we love photos! A big part of the doll quilt fun is seeing what everyone has created, but as with most things in life, there is a little etiquette to follow. Usually the receiver will post a photo, but not everyone has a camera, so please photograph your quilt before you send it just in case. Don’t post a photo until your partner receives your quilt so the surprise won’t be spoiled. If you cannot post a photo, please ask your partner to do so.

PARTNERS: Once sign up has ended, I will assign partners. I will try to pair you with someone you haven’t had as a swap partner previously. You will make a quilt for your partner and s/he will make one for you. Please PM your partner to share physical addresses. Do not post addresses on this thread. Although there is a theme and it is often sender’s choice, it is always nice to ask if your partner has any preferences.

COMMUNICATION: If something unexpected comes up and for any reason you cannot meet the deadline or need to drop out of the swap, please let me know as soon as you know. If you take the time to communicate any difficulties, I can make sure things work out favorably for you and your partner with no hard feelings as a result. If, however, you just disappear off the face of the earth, you will not be permitted to participate in future swaps until you make good on your commitment.

DOLL QUILT GROUP – Besides this thread, there is a Doll Quilt group on the Quilting Board. There you can upload photos, start discussions on ideas for themes, share resources about techniques for doll quilts and other mini quilts, and whatever you want to do. It’s your group, so you decide!

Sounds like fun and throwing away the rules (not following directions) is my specialty when it comes to most activities. PMing you now, Krystyna!

Judith1005 04-19-2012 12:20 PM

I'm sending pm now. I'm pulling fabrics from my stash, then raiding moms for some different fabrics. I'm excited about the theme Krystyna.

Krystyna 04-19-2012 12:33 PM

Judith, I'm excited by this one, too. From the PM's I'm getting, it sounds like a lot of us are looking forward to "coloring outside the lines"!

Lynnie25 04-19-2012 01:30 PM

Sign me up Krystyna. Sending PM now. Already have my crazy design running around my crazy brain.

Now where is my sewing machine manual so I can find out how to do some of these crazy stitches...it's about time I got this machine smoking !!!

QuilterMomma 04-19-2012 01:38 PM

Oh no Lynnie25, you are not supposed to let your machine smoke, it is addicting. (LOL;)) Oh, I get it, that was what you wanted it to do, addicted.

Little RoO 04-19-2012 03:15 PM

Probably have PM you already but I'm in....throwing caution to the wind and going for the crazy look.

urgodschild2 04-19-2012 03:27 PM

I am in. You won't believe this but I have two berninas. I only use one. the other one is an embroidery machine with a lot of stitches. I have had it now for 4 years and I have never used it. Yep there is sits....so pretty and probably lonely. So when I get home from Australia, I am going to give it a hug and see what she can do. Already Pm'd you. I really know that I can do this because all my mistakes will look intentional. which they are really.

Can't wait to go a little crazy in May. Already PM'd you. Have fun with this one!

Krystyna 04-19-2012 04:03 PM

Just to let you all know, I'll be responding to PM's tomorrow or Friday. I am a little behind in sewing at the moment.

Krystyna 04-19-2012 04:57 PM

A couple of things ...
Does anyone want two partners?
Does anyone mind getting a partner early? One of our swappers is going away on a cruise so I'd like to get her hooked up
Here's a thought ... I know May is going to be an insanely creative month ... so how about entering your blocks in the QB contest? The dates work! Here's the link for info http://www.quiltingboard.com/quiltin...ml#post5155257

And last but not least, don't forget the AAQI quilt challenge!

moonrise 04-19-2012 05:03 PM

jillnjo 04-20-2012 04:20 AM

K.- I was wondering if a bound little quilt counts for a one block contest? I think the contest sounds like fun!

Krystyna 04-20-2012 04:57 AM

Jilnjo, not sure at all, but you can post and ask!

And ... boy oh boy ... here's another resource for wonky quilts ... Liberated Quilts http://www.with-heart-and-hands.com/...s-letters.html

I am a fan of funky flowers, etc, and wonky. Every few years my quilting runs amuck...this is one that I framed and hangs above our couch using weird methods...can't wait to design something for May's swap!

Krystyna 04-20-2012 08:57 AM

Ronda, what a fun rosey quilt!

Dragonfly Nana 04-20-2012 03:01 PM

Ok all, I am gonna give "crazy" a whirl. Like Little Roo, I am rather structured but willing try and push my boundaries a bit.

QuilterMomma 04-20-2012 03:12 PM

Great way to use up those little pieces of fabric! You can do it Dragonfly Nana.

Krystyna 04-20-2012 04:26 PM

I'll make you structured people a deal - get unstructured for May and then you can put your heads together and pick the next oh-so-structured theme. Deal?

moonrise 04-20-2012 04:53 PM

I'm finding that crazy quilts are "freeing", somehow. It seems chaotic when sewing the bits together, but it all comes together in the end, especially when fancy stitching and embellishments are added.

I love embellishments! If something doesn't look quite right, you can sew a piece of lace or a button over it, and the problem disappears! LOL! :D

LeslieFrost 04-20-2012 05:40 PM

I'm in! Sending a PM!

While all of you are planning a crazy, wonky or otherwise unusual Doll Quilt for May, I hope you'll also plan to make a little quilt for AAQI. Chele started this tradition, in May, in the anniversary month of the Doll Quilt Swap.

This year we're expanding the AAQI challenge to the whole QB. You can find the challenge thread here: AAQI Challenge.

I know that we'll have a great month!

Quilty-Louise 04-20-2012 09:00 PM

I'm in this time too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JuanitaBean 04-20-2012 10:29 PM
