May 2019 Mug Rug Swap (National Bike Month with a “Pop of Color”)

Please make sure to read through the posting before signing up.

We will celebrate the month of May with the theme of National Bike Month with a ” Pop of Color”

Sign-up starts: 21 April 2019

Sign-up Ends: 30 April 2019

Partners will be assigned no later than 2 May 2019

Deadline to mail: 20 May 2019

With Spring upon us, we all are taking the Bikes out for a ride and we are seeing all the beautiful Flowers and the different colors of the trees come to life, so this month lets create something to do with Bikes and add a “Pop of Color” to it. Let your imagination wonder to a beautiful Mug Rug.

What is a mug rug? A mug rug is an item you use to place a cup of coffee, tea or soda on, along with a small snack plate/napkin beside it. It’s approximately 9”x8” or larger so both items will fit. Please do not make it smaller than 9”x 8” (unless your partner tells you specifically that she wants a smaller size), as that is quite small for both items as it is!

1. You will be assigned a partner. This is not a secret pal swap. Each partner will contact the other partner for addresses. You are encouraged to talk to each other and find out little things about them so you can make a special gift just for them. You can appliqué or paper-piece or just go with regular piecing? Will you make your mug rug rectangular, circular, square, hexagonal? How you choose to make your mug rug is up to you, but make it with love & pride!

2. The mug rug must be made with 100% quilter’s cotton, with a nice cotton batting in between to protect furniture from possible damage due to heat/cold. Use a binding method you are comfortable with, or practice & learn a new binding technique! Also, the mug rug must be quilted. Remember, this is a gift you are making for someone. Be proud of your work & do your best. And be kind about what you receive. If you have any issues, please work it out with your partner first, before contacting me; communication is key. This board is for all of us to make friends & have fun.

3. For this month’s swap, you must send your name, address, e-mail address and phone number for emergency’s only to Armylady2012 by April 30th. Deadline to send out swaps is May 20th & don’t forget to send Armylady2012 notice, with tracking number, that you have sent to your partner. Any delays in mailing must be shared with Armylady2012, prior to the deadline of May 20th. I want everyone to receive a partner’s trade. We should not have to request angels. Again, communication is important. You can be forgiven if something comes up & you notify your partner & me prior to the deadline. But if you don’t communicate & don’t send out a mug rug to your partner, you will be locked out of swapping with this group and negative feedback will insure other swap groups know you didn't send. Also, if your partner has not sent to you by the deadline & you have not heard from her, please let me know. I’m pretty easy-going about things, but there is rarely a good reason for non-communication. If your partner has not communicated with you at all, let me know ‘way before the deadline so we can possibly avoid a problem later.

4. Also, please let me know if you can mail internationally! This is important, as we have quite a few international swappers who want to join us, & I don’t want anybody to be left out. So if you can ship internationally — even just one time — that would make it more fun for our overseas & Canadian swappers!

5. You are free to include little gifts with your mug rug, handmade or store-bought; it’s up to you. It’s been discussed on a previous swap that if you talk with your partner, maybe you can agree on an extra item each — like a FQ. That would be between you & your partner. But you are only obligated to send a mug rug. Nothing else is required in this swap.

6. Any questions? Contact Armylady2012 immediately and I will help get you started.

7. Please take a photo before you ship your package to your partner, just in case she cannot post a photo. We all love to see photos! But don’t post it until you know your partner has received your package & that she is unable to post a photo herself.

8. Be sure to label the outside of the package with the name of the swap & your swap name. Many people sign up for more than one swap & it can be confusing to the recipient in trying to figure out which swap it came from.

9. And most of all — just have fun!

Sign Up Today! If you have a preference of what you receive, just communicate that with your partner. You are required by the board to send things you sign up for, or risk not having the ability to swap again in other swaps. Again, per board rules, anything about your partner or the item they send to you that does not please you is not to be posted on the board but sent in a PM to me, Armylady2012, or to your partner to sort out. It’s polite and it’s the right thing to do.

Okay, I'm in again. Please sign me up. I will send a pm.

What exactly do you mean by a Pop of color? Does the mug rug have to be black and white with a Pop? Or just a monochromatic with a Pop? Or just nice spring Pops of color?

Boop56 04-21-2019 12:36 PM

I would like to do this again, please.

letsquilt 04-22-2019 04:47 AM

It just has to have a pop of color, for instance if you applique a Bike and you add a Flag that is a pop of color that is not added to the Mug Rug already. I hope I explained that good enough.

Here's my initial fabric pull for this month. I'm sure I've pulled more then what I need. But, it is a starting place for me. I fell in love with the little hedgehogs on bikes print. It is from JoAnn Fabrics. I've been eye balling it for awhile. So, I was especially excited to see the theme this month and know I could buy a small piece of it to use in something.

Not sure if my pop will be yellow or red? Or maybe both.

Pondering and still designing.

I need to finish Mother's Day fabric postcard for my mom first. I am about half way finished.

mpepperm37 04-24-2019 10:59 AM

Hi! I've had to skip the last two swaps, but I'm back in for May. I'll be sewing standing this month, so keep your fingers crossed for me, please. Will send PM. Thanks.

Judith that is some adorable fabric, can't wait to see what you create. Melanie So glad to have you back in the swap again, take care and I am sure you will do great even if you are standing in sewing.

Judith1005 04-25-2019 10:59 AM

Is 12" square too big for a Mug Rug?? I think I tend to make mine a bit too small. What is your favorite size for mug rugs?

Judith 12" is fine I only require you to make it 9" X 8" I usually make mine bigger also, I think the required size is a little small.

Thanks Maxie. I think I have decided to go with a 9 or 10" block. I pulled out a 12" block and actually thought It might be a bit too big. Especially for those that actually use theirs at work. You don't want it to be to large to actually use. But, I do appreciate your feedback.

I have PM'ed my partner will start creating my Mug Rug.

Queenbarbiej 05-01-2019 09:09 AM

I just PM'ed my partner. Can't wait to see all of the creative mug rugs.

Judith1005 05-01-2019 09:38 AM

I have pm'd my partner. I will be able to find a bit of time to sew in just a little while. I want to finish cleaning my kitchen first. Today was cabinets, pantry, kitchen floor and my dryer is in the same area as my pantry. So, want to get that cleaned and dusted out. My dryer is all that's left then I can go have some fun.

I am working on my Spring/Summer cleaning right now. Yesterday was bathrooms, and a boatload of dusting and the foyer floor. And, vacuumed 2 rooms of carpet. That's all the carpet I have left. Yeah, got that all finished yesterday.

Tomorrow, If the weather is right, I will do the windows inside and out. If not, I will be sweeping and cleaning the synthetic wood floor. (right after I go get a refill bottle of the cleaner, I am almost out)

The last thing I'll do is finish straightening up in the sewing room. I'm going to save that job for the end of the week. I'm hoping to be done finishing up my mug rug by then. Then those supplies can be put away. I'm sure it will. These little mug rugs practically make themselves.

nancycreates 05-01-2019 10:52 AM

I have pm'd Queenbarbiej. I look forward to seeing all the creations!

Armylady2012 05-01-2019 02:16 PM

Ladies thank you all for keeping me updated.

Judith1005 05-01-2019 05:06 PM

My partner and I have touched base. Let the fun begin.

mpepperm37 05-03-2019 07:29 AM

I’ve contacted Boop56.

Judith1005 05-03-2019 04:39 PM

I have started my mug rug. I have the main block ready. Now, decisions, decisions. Trying to figure out if I should add something out or not. I'm going to demo a few things tomorrow and see if that's the direction I should take. So far, I'm happy with the way it's coming along.

letsquilt 05-03-2019 06:21 PM

I’ve got the center finished now to get the rest done, I tend to make mine bigger 10-12”. A lot of times I put them with my mini sewing machines

That's awesome also. Gives you a little more room to play.

Boop56 05-05-2019 05:39 PM

mpepperm37 and I have exchanged addresses and I am actually mailing mine out tomorrow, 5-6.

nancycreates 05-06-2019 08:48 AM

QueenBarbieJ your mug rug is on its way.

Queenbarbiej 05-06-2019 09:29 AM

Thanks Nancycreates. I was FMQ-ing your mug rug when I realized that I had nothing but eyelashes on the backside. So now I have to rip it all out for the second time and redo it. The sewing machine I'm FMQ-ing with is being picky. I think I will use my newer sewing machine to FMQ it. Yours will go in the mail next week.

Boop56 05-06-2019 10:07 AM

I did send mine out today but I forgot to take pictures.
