nancia 05-26-2012 07:09 AM

you are a little ahead of me, abd. i'm still at the idea stage. will start drawing this afternoon, i hope. color that first comes to mind is blue--rich cobalt or lapis. maybe 3 colors added sparsely. does that help?

ideas eh? i am using a moda charm pack. i decided it was easier than trying to dig out all of my kaffe fasset fabrics and snip small pieces. and here is the start of my design idea. each one of these squares will be filled by a piece of fabric.

Linny 05-26-2012 08:52 AM

Well, my first one was a wash.....still have some of the same ideas. My colors aren't as vivid, but the design is very simple and I'm hoping the quilting will give it what it needs. We'll see. It is nature inspired. I think art quilts are very different from patchwork. I'm having fun with it now and I hope someone will enjoy getting it.

Linny 05-26-2012 09:21 AM

abd, guess I didn't reveal much in the way of ideas...I use art.com for inspiration and I love trees, so trees it is. I'm going to colorize them to give a needed punch of color and am using sharpie permanent pens with alcohol. There's a combination of applique and regular piecing before machine quilting. Gosh, I hope it works out.

nancia 05-26-2012 10:37 AM

i will try to post some photos. the first shows possible color palette, and the rest are an antique crazy quilt i inherited from my gm. the yellow grosgrain ribbon was used post-american revolution for cigar wrappers. thought you'd like the eye candy! i am posting these on the may dq thread, too.

sorry, no pictures. according to the window i'm waiting for the quiltboard, 3 minutes. will try again later. knew it was going too smoothly! lol;)

What do you mean? Inquiring minds want to know.

[or, maybe AN inquiring mind, at least!:D]

jaciqltznok 05-28-2012 12:20 PM

ok, so are we to do something along the "modern quilt" group looks or just any "art" quilt...they are two different looks entirely!

this is what the Modern quilt group page used to define a "modern" quilt
http://themodernquiltguild.com/about-2/

Linny 05-28-2012 01:36 PM

Linda, I'm trying to go back in memory to who it was on the board that introduced this technique. It was a picture of a pear and the sharpie was used directly on the fabric, then alcohol was rubbed on to create a bleeding effect. I will research more, but she was very good at it and the results were so pretty. I'm not as confident so am using a q-tip dipped in the alcohol, then sharpie applied to q-tip. It's just more subtle that way. I'll let you know, but I remember looking it up on the board and finding info so maybe it's still there.

okay, I found it...just go to "advance search" and type in sharpie art....lots of stuff on art quilts also. You still can sign up and make a beautiful art quilt. How about it?

jaciqltznok 05-28-2012 02:29 PM

so the sharpie will NOT be permanent then? What if you use a an actual fabric marker?

guess I do a lot of experimenting, but am going to rinse my quilt, then dry it because I like that washed look.....that doesn't mean it will work, but I'm going to try it. People who use silks and other fussy fabrics probably wouldn't ever put their piece in water. As for the fabric marker, guess you'll have to read what the manufacturer says. If you color with them and don't ever wash it, it should be fine. I really think any technique we use within the guidelines of this swap will be fine.(size and machine quilted). I look at this swap as being very free spirited....can't wait to see everyone's creative work.

JuneBillie 05-28-2012 06:48 PM

Yes, we do need to know, because I was planning to do the modern quilt. Lots of fun ahead.

well this is a modern mini quilt swap and not an art mini quilt swap. modern quilts and art quilts are in two different categories. perhaps in our designing stages, our minds become so creative and flooded with ideas that the ideas start to merge.:D

one statement from the modern quilt guild's website sets home for me what modern quilting is in my mind:

"Modern quilters have embraced the new options available in textiles: bold colors, graphic prints, larger scale prints, and Japanese fabrics. Much like the Amish quilting tradition, many modern quilters are also exploring quilt designs made exclusively with solid fabrics or with just a hint of print.."

happy creating to all as i look forward to seeing your designs.

in this swap i am definitely working on modern as opposed to art. there is no embellishment on modern quilts. most are rather stark. minimalist--just the minimum design. i have a son who is into the whole minimalist lifestyle, but when i offered to make him a minimalist modern quilt, he said no. he wants one with thousands of colors! lol! go figure!:)

Thanks Linny! I will have to try that. If you are going for a more washed out look then I can see where the Sharpie would work, especially if you heat set it. Thanks also for the q-tip idea. And, for the invite to join. I am pretty sure my tastes run more along the 'art' quilt style but I have decided to follow along and see what y'all come up with. It seems like everywhere I turn I see articles, etc. on 'modern' quilts. Can't wait to see what you come up with.:)

kaffe fasset designs modern quilts and his quilts and fabrics are full of color and you can include amy butler in that group. modern quilting is not just minimalist, that is only part of it. have you seen city quilts designed by cherry house quilts? she uses solids for her quilts but they are full of color.

oh and modern quilts can contain embellishments too. i am designing one now that will be ladies dressed up and i will embellish their dresses with both decorative stitches and beading/buttons.

nancia 05-29-2012 11:08 AM

guess i mis-stepped. sorry.

heyuitsme 05-29-2012 07:16 PM

alright, here goes the umpteenth time trying to post what I'm thinking of doing. lol, every time I start, one of the kiddos goes super-sonic. :)
I'm liking this pattern http://pinterest.com/pin/9148005463381213/
but when I saw that alot are making their own design, I started playing around with a 8 pointed star based on an octagon center...similar I guess to the center of a feathered star block, but no feathers...I'm not sure. I can see a few ideas in my head, but they are not translating well onto paper. we'll see what happens!

heyuitsme 05-29-2012 09:55 PM

pictures ladies, I need pictures!
or are we not posting pics so that it is a surprise?
either way, very excited about this swap and can't wait to see everyone's minis!

Havplenty 05-29-2012 10:16 PM

i would rather it all be a surprise but this is what i am using for my inspiration for inquiring minds.

Havplenty, that is pretty. Is it one piece of fabric? My eyes aren't what they use to be.

the only 'not me' fabrics i could purchase is civil war prints, repro's (30's, 1800's or otherwise) and some calicos are very suspect and i don't see these in a cart of mine any time soon. but other than this i think i can give most fabric a gander though my preference is fabric with a voice (bright colors, large prints, geometrics, etc.)

heyuitsme 05-30-2012 09:56 AM

oh, thanks for posting my picture! I like the contrast of warm and cool colors...and the gray is soo rich.
which reminds me, I need to get solid color shopping. I literally did not have ANY solids until about a week ago. I don't have much/any time to quilt, so I'm focused on stash building...slowly and when there are super good deals. (why are all my crafting hobbies so expensive!?!) Anyway, I purchased some white, brown and a grey, but really need to get some more colors. hmmm, off to check joanns sales! :)

Linny 06-01-2012 10:27 AM

Haven't seen too much activity here since the holiday. How's everyone doing? I started a second quilt....one I like working on much more. Can't wait to get a partner. Won't be long now. Linny

we are all trying to figure out how to let the elastic out on our shorts to give some room to digest all of the bbq we ate.:D

eagleoneowl2u2 06-01-2012 02:58 PM

Just sent you a PM, I think that this will be a fun swap to do. Am excited to do this. I can now get the new book that I got and pick out a pattern to make now. TeeHeeeHeeHee :)

abdconsultant 06-02-2012 05:18 AM

Wake up everybody we have 20 so far.............................................

JuneBillie 06-02-2012 07:02 AM

Sounds like we have more folks coming in. Let's keep coming. We want all of you. I have my main piece of fabric now for my modern mini quilt. In the process of what I want it to say. I will be working on that today, in between getting my last two plants in the ground. :D Just finished adding bird seed to a feeder out front, and have already seen the redbirds flocking around. It's such a pretty, sunny morning, and a bit cooler, but nice.

nancia 06-02-2012 05:33 PM

we had major thunderstorms yesterday with even tornado warnings, but none showed up. today it's cool and beautiful. thanks for the rain, the plants are happy! have a design for my dq swap done, and may use a variation for this swap, as in try it out for this swap. ok?

Lv2sew2011 06-02-2012 10:40 PM

I think I will try this one too! Please add me...
