Welcome to the fun Caroline! Looking forward to seeing what you make!

Anoka Quilter 11-18-2014 06:51 PM

This is a great swap CarolinePaj. I have done the last two and have enjoyed them both. Welcome!

ube quilting 11-19-2014 02:24 PM

Welcome Caroline. have fun here on the swap. I usually plan three or four wall hangings through out the 4 months time line and as I work on them one will stand out more than the others and That is the one I will finish.

Hi every one. Doing some sewing on my GFG and in a week or so I will have a month to work on all the hexies I can handle.

My Dr. has finally decided that I have to have knee surgery to tame a torn meniscus. I have been doing PT since August and even though it has helped a great deal with strengthening my knee joint, the tear still needs to be corrected.

I will be out of work for a month:D:( and then two more months to full recovery, if I do everything right!

This is my first time to experience anything like this.

I am setting some small goals to keep me occupied while I spend time at home and on the QB.

Stay well everyone.
peace

Rhonda 11-20-2014 08:44 PM

Glad you are getting time to sew ube but not for this reason. Hope your recovery goes quickly!

Anoka Quilter 11-21-2014 08:47 AM

Good luck with the surgery Ube. Hopefully it is not the presser foot knee:)

Rhonda 11-21-2014 04:28 PM

when I had to have surgery 15 yrs ago I had never had anything done before. It is very intimidating and a bit scary I know. Hopefully yours will go easy and well for you!!

I always told my kids - It could be worse- so when I found out I had to have surgery my 6 ft son is following me down the hall going It could be worse Mom! LOL I Just wanted to say shut up!!! so bad but I knew he meant well. LOL Not much fun getting my words fed back to me LOL

OK, my wall hanging is done. It started as the leftovers from this wall hanging, which is sideways in the picture. Only had some of the panel left. Looked for fabric--could only find the panel or kits for the wall hanging. So--into the stash. Here is how it turned out

It has what might be called either dense quilting or thread painting. Call it what you like. Looks like this.

The back is pieced.

Anoka Quilter 11-25-2014 10:14 PM

Nice wall hanging Krisb. I never would of guessed those came from the same panel.

Aurora 11-26-2014 04:23 AM

I found my pattern and hope to get a start on it in a couple of weeks. I love these swaps, they offer an opportunity to hone new skills on smaller projects. I plan to give hand applique a shot this time around.

ube quilting 11-26-2014 11:31 AM

Hey Krisb, That is a fast finish. Very nice use of some shared panel material. Like a quilt with a view. Isn't nice not to wait till the last minute. No worries about finishing on time.

May a good Thanksgiving bless everyone.

Anoka Quilter 11-26-2014 12:35 PM

I have two patterns I am thinking about. If I have the time I will make them both; however, the question is which one to start with first.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!!!

ube quilting 11-27-2014 02:12 PM

I started to fit hexies together and need to make an adjustment somewhere. I want to connect the hexies with diamonds (I think). When I put the pieces together, a full hexagon gives to much separation between fussy hexies.
So the diamond works better to unify the look. Getting the size right is a challenge.

The diamonds seem to be a bit big. The edge of the hexie is 1" so I would think the diamond would follow siute (ha ha) so to speak. When I sew them together, There is a bit too much center for the six surrounding hexies.

I'll have to keep experimenting :D to get the perfect size template.

I just finished the following mini. Not sure if I am going to use it as a wall hanging for this swap or not but figured I would share.

ube quilting 12-01-2014 03:16 PM

Very nice Anoka. What size are the kites? It reminds me of when I walk in my woods and take time to lay down and look up through the trees. One of my favorite views.

I don't think Rhonda minds that we post any of our work here to share. I like to see what the swap people are doing. I have done it and she seems all right with it.
peace

Rhonda 12-01-2014 03:27 PM

The whole point of not knowing who gets what wall hanging was so we could post as many pics as you want of progress and of the finished wall hanging. Since noone knows who gets what no surprises are spoiled.

so I thoroughly encourage you to post LOTS of Pics!!

jeanne49 12-04-2014 12:32 PM

Haven't started my wall hanging yet because of working on Christmas stuff. Was thinking of something with hexies, but saw a program on The Quilt Show and now I might be doing an applique project. Who knows, something else might catch my eye between now and whenever I get started, but I do believe it will be an appliqued project. Hope everyone has a great holiday.

JNCT14 12-06-2014 03:08 AM

I'm in Rhonda. I love this swap.

ube quilting 12-06-2014 02:38 PM

Hi there J. Glad to know your are with us again.

Rhonda 12-06-2014 04:07 PM

Great JNCT I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone makes.

Anoka Quilter 12-08-2014 11:25 PM

Hi Ube`

They are not kites. The LQS is doing a six month mini series using the mini Jaybird Quilt Patterns that use the Mini Hex N More Ruler. The final size of the mini is 17 1/2 by 20 1/2.

I am almost done with my 2nd one and will post pics At least I will have a wall hanging done by the swap deadline. But I will keep people guessing as to which one will be mailed.

Hi Anoka, sorry to have misspoken about the block in your quilt. A rose by any other name........ So the template is a hexie with an added triangle? Very, very small too. What size is the template? I am fascinated now.

The hexies I am working on are 1" and I thought that was small.

Sue Daley has great tutorials that have helped me get started on my hand sewing adventure and what a difference that shows just by changing up a few simple things I was doing.

My twelve original blocks are now relegated to the practice pile and I will start another bunch with the wealth of information I have learned.

It took me a few weeks and 5 LQS to find long thin needles, Straw #11, they must be popular. My stitches are now as invisible as they can get with the addition of a very fine thread. Superior, Bottom Line, 60wt.

I am over joyed with the improvement in my work. (pat on the back)!!!!!

I will post some before and after pictures later in the week just to show the difference. Can you tell, I'm a bit giddy!
peace

Anoka Quilter 12-09-2014 09:33 PM

OK Ube, I need to get home and look at the patten instructions; however, I remember cutting small triangles from one side of the ruler and the larger main pieces using the full size of the ruler. As I did the pattern the dog ears matched up to make it very easy to make the seams all match. I really enjoyed the pattern and the way it went together.

MarionsQuilts 12-10-2014 11:42 AM

I'm in!!!! I'm off for two weeks in December, so will have plenty of time to do a wall hanging! Can't wait to get started!

JNCT14 12-10-2014 04:42 PM

I am thinking about a rectangular wall hanging using a diagonal block border and redwork for the center panel. Hmmmmmm

Rhonda 12-11-2014 07:59 PM

Great Marion! Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Ube does your mind ever slow down?? LOL

Love seeing all the conversation going on! Nice way to keep this thread active.

Aurora 12-12-2014 03:22 AM

It is good to see all the chatter and new interest. I have been playing catch-up. Finally started my 2014 challenge project for my guild and finished the piecing just last night. Now to start the hand quilting, fortunately it is an Ozark Star Table Topper, which I can now cross off my "bucket list". Also finished my Jelly Roll 2 after a necessary fix.

Now the way is open to get busy on my wall hanging project.

MarionsQuilts 12-12-2014 05:44 AM

So I've tried to find the average dimensions it should be and can't find it ... 36x36 or something like that? (inches LOL not cm or feet!) And do I have to post my progress? I'm off for two weeks and will likely just plop my butt down and do it all in 2-3 days and I always forget to take pics of my progress ... If I do ... let me know, I'll put an alarm on my phone to remind me!!!

Rhonda 12-12-2014 10:46 AM

There are no limits on the wall hanging. When I did swaps in the past I got alot of questions regarding size and would have someone say oh shoot I can't use mine as it is an inch over the limit. So I don't want any limits. the only thing I said in the guidelines was it should be smaller than a lap quilt. well I really don't care how big it is. As far as I am concerned anything goes.

Concentrate more on the fun of making it and sharing and don't worry about the size. Whatever you want to make is just fine.

If you can post progress pics as in pics of the fabrics you are going to use or any pics of your pattern or work in progress is great but not a have to. Posting pics is a nice way of keeping conversation going. And we all love pictures!!

Rhonda 12-12-2014 10:48 AM

Aurora we'd love to see pics of your table topper and any other finished quilts if you like. Sharing what you are working on doesn't have to be limited to the wall hanging.

ube quilting 12-12-2014 03:52 PM

I have to get all my excitement out in the next two days. Monday is my surgery day and I will be a bit off my game for a few days after that. Packing as much sewing as I can in the few hours I have until then.:D
peace

Rhonda 12-12-2014 09:50 PM

we'll be waiting for your return! Hope all goes well and that recovery doesn't take any longer than it has to

Anoka Quilter 12-13-2014 09:46 AM

Best of luck with your surgery Ube and I wish for you a fast recovery so you can get back to your sewing.

JNCT14 12-13-2014 02:52 PM

Help! On Rhondas last swap, someone posted a pattern for a t shirt quilt and it may have been from Nancy Zieman? Anyone remember? It was a large focal square, offset, with what looked like a frame on 3 sides. I thought I had it but no luck....

JNCT14 12-13-2014 05:29 PM

Ube I hope your surgery goes well!

Earlier I mentioned I would post pictures of the difference in my hand sewing, before and after I changed the needle and thread I was using when I started this project. I am pleased with my improvement.

Before

After

Here is my set up for working on my hexies. I use a wooden tray and can carry it all over the house to sit and work in any sunny window. A pile of fabric scraps, glue and papers inside the fabric box, my thread and needle in a great little pin cushion and my wooden seam ripper. A wonderful portable studio.

Holy cow those are tiny pieces! And I thought 1.5" squares were small!

ube quilting 12-15-2014 04:31 AM

I thought they were small too, until I saw Anokas' wall hanging, post #55. Her whole quilt is 17 1/2" across I figure the hexies to be about 1/2"or 5/8". Amazing work she did!

JNCT14 12-15-2014 05:20 PM

I started my WH! Even though it will be after Valentine's Day it will still have reds and pinks in it. It wont be themey though. I like the pattern I picked.
