Here are my next 2 blocks. I am making one of each to make sure they turn out okay first. I think I might use a slightly darker background for the bee. It's hard to see the white wings against the cream background. Other than that I am happy with both of them.

rwquilts 05-12-2012 05:34 PM

Your blocks are adorable craft!

craft phanatic 05-12-2012 05:36 PM

I just realized why the bee looks funny...the head should be black!!!! DUH! Okay, thats my bee then! The other six will have black heads!

craft phanatic 05-12-2012 05:38 PM

Thank you Ronda!

Hi, I am a newbie on the board, but PP speaks to my heart. I have done a couple workshops in them and have done Snowmen, teacups and Rudolf head. I would love to join but I am also in Canada. Does that make a difference? how do you work out postage?
Patti
can someone email me if you want to reply privately?

SunlitenSmiles 05-14-2012 05:48 AM

thinking avacado tree, could go outside and take a photo and figure a pattern......hummm......but then would need lounge chair, little table, margarita, chips........................guess I will stay with birdhouses.

Hi Patti! We'd love to have you join us! Canada I think is pretty easy...I believe that the padded flat rate envelopes can also go there with the same charge, but will have to double check that out. We can communicate through PM's when it comes time for mailing, but basically, you pay for shipping both ways. You might have to mail a bit sooner and might get your package a bit later. Those are the only differences I see? :) Just let us know and I'll sign you up!

SunlitenSmiles 05-14-2012 05:53 AM

welcome Pattia I am sure here will be a way.....other Mysteries and challanges have participation from many different countries. My Dad was born in London, Ontario, Canada.................so we must be cousins !!!

I am feeling frustrated. My book came in and the blocks are way too hard or not applicable. I found blocks online and started making some but because they are not 6 1/2 in. or exactly 3 1/2 in. I need to adjust them and I seem to not get my measurements right or do something wrong. For now I am laying everything aside because some where I stopped having fun. So 2 blocks done after strugling but I do not feel like doing 4 more of that pattern and I think that was the deal right? Six of the same pattern but different fabrics are OK. DH did make me a wooden iron out of the spindles of an old rocking chair. I have been using that and it works great with paper piecing. Not sure how I did without that before. So some light in all of this effort.

brushandthimble 05-14-2012 01:31 PM

Annaquilts,
take your pattern and enlarge it on a copier until the block with seam allowance measures 6.5. I have done it before and it worked very well. By coping all the pieces stay in the same perspective. Hope this helps.

Annaquilts 05-14-2012 01:55 PM

Thanks for the feedback brush and thimble I will have to see if I can get that to work for me.

I'm sorry you've been so frustrated Anna! Sometimes putting some distance from that will help when you come back to it. Remember that borders on smaller blocks will be okay as well to bring them to the 6 1/2" size if needed? Also...I am not going to be a horrible stickler about the same block rule per set...it's easier for me to swap blocks if they are the same, but I would rather have you participate and be happy than have the same blocks. So do the best you can and that will be quite good enough? As long as people leave the papers on, sign the backs in some way and they measure 6 1/2", it will all be fine. By the way, I have no idea about what a wooden iron is...please, do tell???

Annaquilts 05-14-2012 03:32 PM

Thanks for the reminder and encouragement Ronda. as for the wooden iron, instead of finger pressing or using a full size iron I use the wooden iron to smooth down the fbaric after sewing each piece into place.
I am not associate with any of these links.

Oh how funny Anna! I have one, but didn't know it by that name. They are nice aren't they? :) I love the one from the spindle...really cute! Thank you for sharing with us!

Mariposa 05-14-2012 05:42 PM

Neat wooden irons!

brushandthimble 05-15-2012 03:37 AM

I really like the one on Esty, tried to purchase it and needed to create an account? I already have a paypal account so what account are they asking me to create? So I did not purchase it:(

Back to subject at hand, I found a beautiful red fabric for my cardinals, just need to get it washed. Sunday is an all day get together at a local hall to quilts, hope to work on my blocks there.

Annaquilts 05-15-2012 06:27 AM

Brush and thimble that wooden iron is cute. DH made my wooden iron but I purchase a pattern recently to make a dress for my little girls. It was also off Etsy and I ran into the same thing. There should be some where you can click and go on. It asks you just incase you have no paypal. I know it is confusing.Instead of the register page can you click on the tab on top and go to sign in?

hoppyfrog 05-15-2012 07:32 AM

A really inexpensive way to make one is to take a clothes pin, the type with the spring holding the two pieces together, and take it apart. Wala, now you have two wooden irons.

It's been a busy couple of days! I think today I will work on my swap blocks! Have been trying to design a cool watermellon...hmmm...designing for PPing isn't for the faint of heart! :)

Thanks for the early morning chuckle Ronda. I started the day with a renewed attitude and hope to work on my blocks later on today. Could you use part of the kitty watermelon to design a block?

Yes, I could Anna, but I have this bee in my bonnet that says..."how hard can this be? You can do this...quit being a woosie"! LOL! I may down the road do just that, but am not ready to give up just yet. Now, remember to ENJOY your sewing today! LOL! That's an order... :)

You said it! A little time, patience, trial and error. Know when to say when, put it away and come back to it refreshed and renewed. :)

Have a great quilty day!

No, but it could be for the wild and crazy! I have been thinking along the lines of designing my pp blocks also.

Can I blame that on you Ronda? Are you the influenceR? :D :D

I know...we'll blame it on the air we breathe here in Washington! Makes us think we can do anything! :)

Croquet anyone?

Cute.
I too cannot find what I am looking for. I just don't want to pick the same thing as everyone else (was maybe doing a butterfly or flower). I guess it will be ok if there are lots in the swap that can exchange.
Question? do all the backgrounds have to be white?

SunlitenSmiles 05-17-2012 04:23 AM

oh, think it is very light not only white, at least hope so, the background fabric I selected (for birdhouses) is very pale blue with white puffy clouds. Will wait now to find out if that is ok, so glad you asked, Pattia.

No Pattia...all background don't have to be white...just daylight colors...could be white, cream, light yellow, light green, light blue, light pink...etc, I have one posted a few pages back that has a light blue background. Even though many patterns may be similar, that's perfectly fine! In real life, how many different flowers are there? Or birds? Or insects, etc? They'll all be somewhat different...this is how I decide what to do...what would I love in my own garden quilt? IN the last PP swap we had a lot of kitties, and I thought it was fantastic...each one very different, and yet they all went together. Do whatever you want to do! And post pictures so we can cheer you on! :)

Croquet is a favorite family outdoor game Craft!

Here is my fruit block...apples and watermellon. What do you think? Too much? The color isn't quite a bright in person as it shows up in the picture, but it is bright. On the others I will use a darker green I think.
