"Once Upon a Time In My Garden" PP Block Swap with a "Twist"

Once Upon A Time in My Garden
6 ½” PaperPieced Block Swap with a “Twist”

This theme draws pictures in my mind of flowers, trees, fruits, veggies , even critters that we find in our gardens…water features, birds, butterflies, insects, statuary, etc. Anything we might find in our gardens, or our “wanna be garden. Let’s keep the backgrounds light.

Blocks will be grouped in sets of 6

You may make up to six sets or 36 blocks total to exchange. All blocks will be swapped. A limit of 6 blocks of any one design.

Block size is 6 ½” Keep the papers on!

Blocks must be constructed of prewashed 100% good cotton fabrics (no muslin, flannel, see through or poly blends) & have¼” seam allowances with no open areas or “holes” where fabric was not caught in a seam. This also includes tears, or cuts in fabrics and blocks. Please make blocks as you would want to receive yourself.

Here’s the Paper PiecedTwist!
You may also make up to 2 sets or 12 blocks of 3 ½” paper pieced blocks with the same garden theme if you like. These will only be swapped out with other 3 ½” paper pieced blocks. They are not part of the original swap, but are an additional swap or “twist”! Same rules apply…only one set of any one design, and if you join in the “Twist”, you must have different designs than the original 6 ½” Block Swap.

Packaging your blocksets
Each set of blocks needs to be enclosed in it’s own ziplock baggie. Package well and send your best method taking into account that the post office isn’t always gentle on packages.

Labeling
Every block needs to labelled in some fashion, with your real name and user name included. This is to make it easier for me to swap your blocks efficiently, and so those who get your blocks can acknowledge and thank you.

Mailing
Mail the best method you choose. The post office system isn’t always gentle and sometimes packages arrive with tears in some envelopes, so take care in your packaging so I get everything you send to me. Please get delivery confirmation…this will allow you to track your package and know when it arrives. I will also notify you of it’s arrival.

I will furnish return envelope padded priority mailers. The cost is $5.30. A stamp is best, but I will accept well hidden cash also if you prefer. Please send a Priority Mail return label with your mailing information filled out as well. This will help me get these back to you quickly.

Signups will be open through July 31[SUP]st[/SUP] with a mail out deadline to me by August 15[SUP]th[/SUP]. Blocks will be swapped and mailed back to you as quickly as possible after blocks have been received.

Please pm me to sign up and let me know the # of sets you plan on making and if you're going to join in the "Twist" and indicate if you're making one or two sets for that. Include your real name as well.

All general rules for swaps are here: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-20154-1.htm.

Okay, let's have some fun!

Annaquilts 05-02-2012 11:35 AM

Definitely count me in. The timing is perfect. Right now I am finnishing up the last of the swaps ending in June. I need to find some more patterns but I am hooked on paper piecing. If there are any good books people recommend that would help with this swap I would love to know. Thanks for setting this up.

Annaquilts 05-02-2012 12:15 PM

Do all 6 blocks in a set need to be identical both in theme and colors?

rwquilts 05-02-2012 12:21 PM

Welcome Anna! Of course Carol Doakes is one of the best known Paper Piecers...I own a book by Linda Causee called 100 Paper Pieced Quilt Blocks which includes a CD and the option to print out blocks from a 2" to an 8" size. There's a great section on garden blocks. I will likely use at least a couple of her designs. Maybe we can get a list going of possibilities, not to mention some of the free patterns on the internet. I'm working on a Carolina Lily right now and will post a picture when I get one block done. It's a bit time consuming. :)

They should be the same block design as it makes it much easiier to swap, but different colors are just fine. I love different choices don't you??? :)

SewExtremeSeams 05-02-2012 01:33 PM

:DRonda, you crack me up! You must sit over there in your quilting room thinking of interesting swaps! And, when you include PPing, you get me everytime. I like the idea of using light backgrounds. Maybe i should deliver my blocks in person this time? :D

Linda... :) :)

Okay, here is my first block. These are quite extensive, so they will take a while. Whew!

Annaquilts 05-02-2012 02:48 PM

No kidding! Some one out did herself. Oh are these ever pretty? When it says light backgrounds should we do white on white or creme on creme or either way? These look white on white.

OK Back on focus. I need to finnish the corset back I put into my daughter's wedding dress as it still needs the modesty panel.

This block is white on white, but I will also do other backgrounds to use up more of my fabrics. I was meaning things you would imagine seeing in the daytime...whites, creams, yellows, etc. but soft shades...no dark colors or black for backgrounds...does that help?

I love this pattern. One could reduce the pattern perhaps to make it work...

I see by your avatar that hot pink is a favorite of yours...I'll keep that in mind my friend. :)

craft phanatic 05-04-2012 02:20 AM

I think I will join in if that is okay. The last swap I did was the Funky Dog one and I loved it! I have been itching to paper piece but didn't know what to make. Problem solved!!!!! I'm not sure how many sets I will get done so I'll have to let you know as I finish each set. Off to find patterns, Robin

rwquilts 05-04-2012 04:30 AM

Welcome Robin! So glad to have you join us! When you find patterns and such if you want to share, feel free! It's nice to get inspiration from each other. Yea!!! :)

Can there be a birdhouse in the garden? May I do one set (six) only ? I have paper pieced but have never done an exchange like this before. Read all the rules page and the very informative first post.....so would like to do this.

rwquilts 05-04-2012 05:48 AM

I think birdhouses would be perfect in a garden! You may do as little as one set absolutely! I will put you name down and a big WELCOME! :)

Alrighty ladies, today I'm gonna get started on this! I found my first block last night and I have all afternoon to work on it. I think it is a little topiary but I looked at so many I forget what I decided on! hehehe. I have to get the mulching done this morning then the rest of the day is mine!! I'll post a pic as soon as I am done with one.

Craft, a topiary sounds super cute! Can't wait to see it. :)

I have been working on some blocks. I just made a couple as I'm still in the "finding out what I want to do" phase. :) But here are the pictures. The snail is for the block swap and the ladybug is for the twist.

Annaquilts 05-05-2012 03:12 PM

Ronda those are both stunning blocks! May I ask where you found the patterns? Very cute and great colors.

rwquilts 05-05-2012 05:08 PM
