You can make these shortcut blocks 12 1/2" if you so choose. it's all about the size of template you use.

When I first posted my methods on the QB in 2009 a friend of mine took one of my quilt blocks and made it into a 24" wall hanging she hung in her hallway. It is very flexible size wise. you are not locked into any particular size unless you are making a key chain or book mark etc.

Thanks Rhonda. That is encouraging. I just started taking a class Farm Girl vintage Sampler and the blocks are 6 inches. To start with that did not scare me as I had done 6 inch blocks before. WRONG! Or at least the 6 inch blocks I made before had nothing smaller then 2 1/2 inches and were simple. The 6 inch blocks in this Farm Girl Vintage are as small as 3/4 inch. I do like how the scale looks, 6 inch, and am intrigued with your cut down technique. It makes a lot of sense. So my "small" blocks will be 6 inch for now unless it is a very simple block or a component of a block.

I started a medium sized My Grandmother's Garden quilt. I'm using the english paper piecing method. I just started digging through my scraps to find colors and enough of each one to make the pattern. it's not really a scrappy quilt because I'll need to buy the background fabric. But since it uses some of my scraps and stash I'm counting it for now. At least until the other one is done.

I am pleased to see this thread so active. Presently, just reading is about all I can do, but I am getting some good ideas.

I have oodles of waste triangles that I am finally seeing potential for.

Rhonda, love the birds in flight! It really moves.

These are wonderful...Dedemac...the improved accuracy comes with time and practice...have you tried a slightly smaller stitch length? One also have to watch for the what I call the "left right swing". I tend to swing into the 1/4" seam at the beginning of the sewing and then swing out at the end...even a little bit will show on these small blocks. I know I do it and always catch myself falling into the habit. Chain stitching a leader or ender helps keep me "in line". Your blocks look great to me...

It is good to see this thread active again! I have found I like the smaller quilt project better. Right now I am working on some mug rugs to match a table runner I did earlier this year. The center pieced block measures about 2.25 finished.(still need to get that 1/4 inch seam better!)

And this is one that was given at Christmas. It measures I think 12.5 by 13.5 and the tree is made of 1 inch finished HST's.

I did use Ronda's 1 1/2 template for this one.

I also struggle with this. Make sure you can see your seam as you are sewing and go slow. don't sew fast. the slower you go the better you can guide it to stay in the 1/4" seam allowance. As OK said it will show a lot more and cause problems with minis than if you are sewing a large quilt.

Thanks Leann I was surprised it popped up again and everyone wanted to revive it. I do love scrappy which is why I started this Scrappy Club to begin with.

I don't do curves but I love drunkard path designs. I use my own shortcut method to do the blocks no curved sewing. I actually used Eleanor Burns method and added my own method to it. I make a yoyo flatten it and spray starch it to take out the cardboard and then sew the circle onto a backing square. cut it in half and then quarters and trim the underside of the yoyo. Cut out a square from the center and you have 4 blocks ready to use.

I love playing with DP blocks. there are so many really neat designs that come out of them.
I don't intend to make this thread all about me and my designs but I do want to share a few of my favorite designs I've done on my EQ

These are not scrappy but you could make any of them scrappy. You could use all diff greens where you see green etc. or just go with all scrappy. You would need to keep the same color value in your fabric choices tho to get the design to show. Light where there is light / med and contrasting to get the designs. Sorry I got lazy and didn't downsize some of the pics.

LOVE those DP's Rhonda! You make it look (and sound) so easy.

Goodness, I have too much to do to spend time drooling on this thread!

Have a wonderful afternoon!

Hmm very nice Rhonda. I understand what you are doing with the yoyos and am familiar with the Quilt in a Day way.

Thanks, every now and then I have the swing out at the end, but the main reason for the error is my seam guide moves, my machine is from the 50's and I tape a credit card to the plate and sometimes it shifts. I just need to check it more often.

I've seen where some people use a strip of blue painter's tape to make the seam line. I do it by eye but as I get older I am thinking I may need to do a strip of tape. partly because I have had to change machines and feet so I don't have my favorite foot on there now. It is harder for me to gauge the seam allowance on this machine.
