Quilting Board's First Scrap Club

Welcome to the first ever scrap club on the Quilting Board!

We all love to use up scraps so I thought it would be fun to get together and share ideas on a
weekly basis. Every week I am going to post a fun word game for everyone to do. I think it would be
great to see some tutorials on some fun ways to use those scraps and share lots of ideas.

As a member of the Club you will get to share tips on using scraps/ view tutorials on using
scraps/have fun with puzzles/share your ideas on using scraps/ and show off what you make with
those scraps!

I may add more things to the club as we go along. I want it to be a fun sharing atmosphere with
lots of good information to share.

I am open to a swap each month of scraps if anyone wants to do that.
I primarily want to share info so we all have a place to find lots of good ideas.

If anyone wants to do a scrap swap I am more than willing. Just didn't want to overload you all with scrap swaps if anyone else is already doing one.

cwessel47 12-05-2012 12:59 PM

Are you SURE about the puzzle you posted? I can find lots of the words - but Babylock is giving me some trouble ( actually all of the "B" words but I'm giving up). There is only one "Y" in the puzzle and I am not finding the work I am looking for! A scrap lover's thread will be a wonderful addition. Thanks Rhonda!

huntannette 12-05-2012 01:01 PM

sounds like a great idea......at the moment i`m working on a quilt called sticks n stones.....first i`m sewing my scraps to a 3 " adding paper roll ...these will be then cut in half to use in the blocks....will show when i`ve made a couple of blocks

lynnie 12-05-2012 01:02 PM

Wow sounds like fun. I have about six bins full of scraps. Cant wait to see what everyone comes us up with.
tell me more about your ' exchange' idea please.

You have me intrigued! Can't wait to see some of your WIP.

I'm loving the idea of uses for scraps... especially market-able ones. (DH thinks this is just a hobby that is going to COST him $$... I'm set out to prove him WRONG.)

I am also interested in future scrap swaps.

So count me IN

The PDF version is missing the first column of letters. If you look at the lil picture it is in that first column, however the PDF is missing it. Hope that helps. :)

Rhonda 12-05-2012 01:37 PM

LOL Yes I assure you they are all there! I did it myself without cheating and I found them all. Kenmore was one I didn't find right away. I think it was the last one I found.

I'll post the answer to it on Fri.

Hmmmm wonder what happened to the pdf? I did it in full size and then changed it to a 5 x 7 so it wouldn't take so much ink to print.

This may explain why you can't find a few words cwessel47!

Oh well the full page one has the first line in it so here is the full page size pdf

Thanks Yosamitesa for pointing that out!

Rhonda 12-05-2012 01:49 PM

For those interested in a swap I was thinking of 10 scraps none any smaller than 3 or 4" unless someone specifies differently. It can be a partner swap or a random swap where I just send you an address to send to and you wont' know til you get them who sent them. Either way is fun so doesn't matter to me at all. I have tons of scraps so would love to swap no problem.

It might be fun to swap an item made out of scraps too or instead of the scraps.

Rhonda 12-05-2012 01:50 PM

Do we have anyone who likes to do minis?

Belfrybat 12-05-2012 01:56 PM

I'm in. Probably not for the swaps however due to postage. But that might change at some point as well. Thanks for the revised puzzle.
Here is a quilt method I've been working on. Finished one and am about half-way through another. This is a great way to use up longer strips.

You don't need her fancy rulers to cut into triangles. Missouri Star Quilts has a tutorial to cut using regular square rulers -- just search for "tube quilt".

tracibug 12-05-2012 02:08 PM

Mine asked me when the quilt spending would stop... I told him when I died. :)

I like the idea of small scrappy items... I heard someone mention a while ago about wanting another mug rug swap. Belfrybat's link would be great for that!

Then there's the 'make your own material from scraps' tutorial that was posted. Might be kind of neat to make our own material from scraps, swap, make something, then swap that item. (or swap back?)

huntannette 12-05-2012 02:43 PM

haven`t made a mug rug yet....maybe it`s time i try lol

My first one was a sort-of success. (It didn't fall apart or anything, but I totally free-handed it instead of planning out my quilting, because I was just playing around. But it works for me! :)

Here are some pictures of my scrap quilt that I made with scraps.

ssnare 12-05-2012 03:05 PM

This was not any pattern. I just matched lenghs of fabric and if it looked ok together, I sewed it together. I just picked bright fabrics from my stash. This is a queen size quilt. I just finished a king size quilt with scraps on the back. I will take a picture and post it.

Rhonda 12-05-2012 03:10 PM

How about a challenge? I challenge you to make something from scraps and post a pic by next wed! Any takers?

Rhonda 12-05-2012 03:11 PM

That is beautiful and so fun looking!

LoupEsprit 12-05-2012 03:13 PM

OK, I'm in. Max size or anything? or is 'scraps' just any "extra" fabric we have left over from other projects?

Rhonda 12-05-2012 03:14 PM

I am planning on doing another mug rug contest in a couple of months so you might keep that in mind if you want to enter anything! An entry has to not have been seen online before entry tho

Rhonda 12-05-2012 03:15 PM

I am a miniaturist so you won't ever see anything big from me LOL

When I used to sell to a local gift shop she liked mostly scrappy looks. so most of what I made to sell was scrappy.
Here are a few of my favorites

Yes babylock is there. I love word search puzzles. Keep them coming.

sticksnstones a work in progree

hmmm have to start over......lol this pattern I found in Quilter`s World October 2012...it`s called sticksnstones and was designed by Ann Sheffield. Instead of using 2 1/2 " squares for the stones , i used paper pieced scraps ....used a 3" wide adding machine paper roll to sew my scraps to......this will eventually go to Charisma since it is from one of our trades...most of the scraps are hers.....i have made a few quilts using this method with paper piecing onto the roll....hope this helps

yes, me too! Is it just HSTs set on point, with sashing?

Granna of 5 12-05-2012 03:47 PM

This thread may have sparked my interest, I have a lot of 2" strips and would like to find something neat to make with them. I will keep watching to see what is transpiring, I very well may be in. I need a boost to get me going.

huntannette 12-05-2012 03:47 PM

love your minis....nice work

Belfrybat 12-05-2012 03:55 PM

Holey moley, folks -- I love your ideas. And thanks for mentioning mug rugs -- I think I'll whip up a few tonight for the three holiday pals swap I'm taking part in here and on another forum. I'll post pics tomorrow or when they are finished.

huntannette 12-05-2012 03:57 PM

I took all the scraps leftover from a civil war quilt kit and made a Country Threads mini log cabin quilt. Since it only needed approx. 1 inch wide scraps, it was perfect. Then a friend was throwing out tiny pieces of coordinated fabric so I made a couple of 8 X 10 inch french braid quilts.

I use a lot of paper piecing when dealing with little scraps to keep me from becoming frustrated.
