Welcome to my Quilt Block Swap!!

Sign up by June 7th

Partners assigned -June 7th

All skill levels are welcome! Beginners can do these designs!

This swap is to show you how to use my shortcut methods to make Quilt Blocks!!
You'll sew fabric together and then cut out a square from the center creating a Pieced Square
These become Boston Blocks / Half Square Triangles/ Star Point Blocks/ Wings Blocks and more.

The Quilt Block you use needs to be one I designed.
You will get a partner and you and your partner will exchange quilt blocks.

You need a 2 1/2" template.
If you don't have one let me know and I will send you one for free.

Use 100% cotton --prewashed or not is up to you.
Don't use borders to make it 12 1/2".
Pm me when you receive or mail out.

Please make sure to read the general rules that apply to all swaps here at the Quilting Board:

Let's try this and see if it works. This is in the user defined section.

to get there without a link
you can click on home.
scroll down below the first section.
You will see a gray strip that says user defined Topic Lists and Tags.
Click on that and it will take you to a page where you can scroll down to the bottom and find my sections.
I have Workshops and Classes / Blocks of the week by Rhonda / Shortcut Blocks by Rhonda/ Pictures by Rhonda.

http://www.quiltingboard.com/tags/bl...by+rhonda.html

I also just added the Shortcuts section and my Block of the Week sections in tags below here. Just scroll down and you will find tags on the left side and you can click on those to go to either of those sections.

I have picked which block I'm making for June. I'm making block Amelia or Verna. I like both. I guess it will depend on what colors my swap partner likes although I can image these 2 blocks in lots of color combinations. Which block are you choosing?

JuneBillie 06-01-2013 10:06 PM

I have picked out my quilt block for June. I don't want to say which, because last time I switched. lol... I am pretty sure though it will be the Rolling Stars Block as long as I have the fabric and colors that will be ok with my partner.

Hi everyone! Has anyone thought about your colors yet? I guess most are waiting until you get your swap partners name. I think I am getting anxious to decide on my colors. lol....

JuneBillie 06-04-2013 12:42 PM

I am also paying a lot more attention to my 1/4 inch seams. These tiny pieces have a way of making me doing that. lol..I have already for this one been adjusting my machine for that, and I don't have the specific quarter inch foot, but I think I am going to order it soon. Very soon! I know most of you are probably very experienced piecers, and quilters, but I am a beginner so you will have to put up with all my zeal into this. lol...

I'm a beginner too. I find this swap helps me work on my skills. This is my second month in this swap. One of the things I learned in last month's swap is color contrast. I did a light blue with large yellow flowers, light blue with little yellow flowers, solid yellow and yellow with blue flowers. It was okay but my swap partner did a blue with purple and green, a dark purple, a solid green and then a pale yellow. With the size of the blocks, the one multi color fabric and then 3 solids I really liked. I'll learn.

I'm waiting until I have a chance to find out what/ if any particular colors or style fabric my swap buddy prefers. I did already pick out which of the Rhonda's blocks I'm going to make. Each month I want to make a different one to work on my skills.

JuneBillie 06-04-2013 08:23 PM

Yes that is exactly what I am going to do to berryberry as far as a different block each time. I am having to learn the contrast too. Hopefully, we will see more pictures soon too. I also ran into the problem of a nest when getting to the middle seams. I read some about them, but still not quite sure what to do. I have been pressing my seams open. I actually enjoy us being able to discuss these things on here. I don't always hear to much like that, but I guess us beginners would find it helpful. I know though a lot of it is in the making of the blocks. I really enjoy Rhonda's method. I don't feel as lost with her method, and more in control.

I haven't had a problem with nest YET. Oh, Please tell me more how you were running into it so I can learn from your experience. The only nests I heard of is due to tension on the back.
I did one of the Boston blocks with chevrons last month. The skill was to do half squares and keep the points, then to have all the points match. I just got a new machine so I was trying to find the 1/4. This machine won't let me do the index card trick and the needle doesn't sit in the middle. It's over to the left. I set the machine on 2.5 which gets the needle in the middle and does a sant 1/4, but I had a problem with total sizing of the block. Now I know it's 1.0. and live with the needle to the left.

What exactly happened to cause the nest problem? There shouldn't be any nesting. When I sew mine together I sew sets of 2 blocks and then I sew the 2 blocks into 4 blocks. then sew the 4 blocks together into the quilt block.

If you can take a pic and post when you have a problem like that I can help you with it. I'm always happy to help.

Rhonda 06-05-2013 09:25 AM

Contrast - my tip to to look at the value of the fabric,. Is it a light or a med? does the fab fall in the middle of these two? If you put them together and stand back a ways can you clearly see two diff colors or do they blend? I prefer to use a really light / med/ and a dark. Think of the values on a scale of one to ten. then place your fabric on that scale. A white as a 1 and a black as a 10. A dark green would be a 10 a white with a green print would be a one.

Sometimes it is hard to decide the value level. I break them down into light-med light- dark light / llight med- med- dark med / light dark-med dark - dark

Hey maybe this should be a lesson to post LOL

JuneBillie 06-05-2013 11:38 AM

I am not quite sure how I had the nesting happen in one place. I did use the putting four together then making others and connecting them as you said. It was a great tip for me. I am learning the value, but I look and look to make sure. lol...

Are we suppose to wait until our partners get their block before posting a pick of it? lol....I am referring to the swap for May.

Yes, and I am kidding more than anything. I do look forward to all our pics though. I will try to ask more questions as I have any problems on my next block. Thank you Rhonda.

That is a very beautiful quilt block. You did a lot of work on it stitchengramie. Very pretty colors, and contrast.

JuneBillie 07-11-2013 05:03 PM

I went to the post office this afternoon, and got the little package with the beautiful quilt block that Mary, Stitchengramie made for me. It is even more beautiful, and perfect than the picture above shows. Mary due to some personal matters mine to you will not be on schedule, but you will be receiving yours from me as soon as I can finish it. Thank you so much for this beautiful quilt block. I will use it in something very special.

JuneBillie, I am so glad that you liked the block. I knew that you dropped out. But I already had your block finished and I sent it to you anyways thinking it might bring you a bit of cheer. Take your time on making my block and make it one of the blocks that you can already now how to make. I tell you now the wing block is a dossie to make. It took me awhile before I could get a wing block right.

JuneBillie 07-16-2013 01:33 PM

Stitchengramie I am sure it is more difficult making the wing block. I have just done the half square triangles, and the boston blocks. I am busy working on your block, and having fun. I am feeling so much better since I have been going to physical therapy. I was in so much pain before it was hard to deal with much of anything when I ended up with an impinged nerve. I finally have the feeling back in my finger too. The physical therapist said his own father had the same thing, but ended up having surgery, and still was left with most of his hand numb permanently.

I had some fatty tumors removed a few years ago on my arm and they took off a small tumor at the base of one of my fingers on the same hand. It was a diff kind of tumor the dr said it would eat the bone if it had been left. I was so worried I wouldn't be able to sew after the surgery. I had been told the one largest tumor had a major nerve running through it and I had a 50/50 chance of losing the use of my hand. So I did end up with that one finger having a surface numbness but it is a small price to pay and I hardly notice it any more

Mary did you get the hang of making the wings block and would you do them again? I did come up with some paper templates you can try instead of using the 30 degree templates. They are like a shirt pattern. You cut out the paper pieces and pin them to fabric. cut out around them trimming them to the same size as the paper template. then you have 4 pieces and you just sew them together into the Wings Block. Might seem easier to do.

Rhonda 07-16-2013 07:58 PM

The quilt blocks are all really lovely!!

JuneBillie 07-16-2013 08:56 PM

I am very impressed with your methods Rhonda. I think they are absolutely wonderful, and fun to create. I would really recommend your methods to everyone. Rhonda that is very scary what happened to you with the fatty tumors too. We never know what can crop up. The biggest thing I lost after my sjogren's and lupus become active was my energy. For everyone with them it's very individual, but for many like myself it literally takes a lot of our life away, and we have to create a whole new life. I am so blessed though, because I do look at life in a very special way now. I really appreciate the small daily things. My husband has seen how much coming to this board has meant to me. Being able to see what others are working on. Being a part of even small things to work on, and having so much fun in learning new things, and challenging myself. So many kind people on this board. It's just a blessing.
