I am here!

ssnare 09-17-2012 05:49 PM

Well, I am here. I could not find which group I am in. QBee did not send any addresses or emails. I will send her a pm. Welcome Difergie and whoever else finds us. LOL.

ssnare 09-18-2012 04:34 AM

What are your names and where are you from?
The reason I have a finished row is that I was in a row robin and I did not like the way it came out before, so I took it apart and decided to start over. LOL. The rows do not have to be finished and sent until Dec. 1. Besides, I have already changed my mind once. I am doing 2 different ones.

The row that I have finished theme is florals in blue, cream, cranberry. I will be sending a sashing with this one. I still have to wash and make the sashings. I had pictures in the original thread of this one. Then the other row will be butterflies made from hankies. I have been collecting hankies and can send some along if people want me to. The part that I do not know, is how to embroider the head and antennae of the butterflies. I have not decided which group to do which row in yet.

What are the themes you all have picked, if you have picked a theme yet? I want us to show pictures as we progress. We will want to pick a name for our group. In the last row robin I was in, we sent a little notebook along for each of us to write in and put our name and address and any information we wanted to add about our thoughts when we were working on each quilt top. We also sent a large label that each one could sign , date and where we lived, so when the top came back home, we could put the label on the back. We can do that if we want to. This is our group and we will get to know each other and have fun together. I like to talk alot, so keep posting. If you have any questions, ask and we will try and help each other.

AmyB 09-18-2012 08:47 AM

OK, I'm here. My name is Amy and I live in Kansas. I'm a single mom of 5, ages 5-12, so my life is crazy-busy. Cooking, cleaning, laundry, sewing, running, blogging, and occasionally sleeping - that's my life.

As for my "theme"....I seriously can't think of anything. I'm considering going totally scrappy and random but I haven't 100% decided yet. Maybe once I see what everyone else wants to do, I'll be able to come up with something!

Difergie 09-18-2012 09:23 AM

I am Diana and I live in Tennessee. Being retired, my life if full of 'what I want to do', and I am loving it! My theme is "Rustic Fall". I have some star blocks from another swap in fall colors so I will send some of them along and ask that you combined them with what you think looks right. I have some sashing so I will probably send it along...we shall see. Looking forward to working with everyone!

AmyB-scrappy is one of my favorites, I think it is a great idea.

ssnare 09-18-2012 11:57 AM

AmyB , where do you live in Kansas? I live in Prairie Village. I think scrappy is great. We all have lots of that. Diana, I love rustic fall. Yours will be the last top I receive before my own. I sure hope there are some stars left that you send with your top when I get it. I would love to incorporate them into your top. My name is Sherry.
Any suggestions on a name for our group? My suggestion is something with Grrrr-8s in it. LOL. Make suggestions and we can vote on it.
I personally would like my rows attached. What do you all want?

Difergie 09-18-2012 12:17 PM

We need to find our missing two! grrr-8s is a really cute idea..love it!

ssnare 09-18-2012 01:02 PM

I pmed the 2 that have not checked in and put a link to our group. So hopefully they find us.

ctipton 09-18-2012 01:49 PM

Here are some pictures of my row that I did last year and I have never finished. It measures 12 1/2" x 60", which is what all of the rows are suppose to be.
This was my first attempt at a row robin. All of the blocks are not the same size, but I made the row come out to the size it was suppose to be. Hope this helps. I am a visual person.

ssnare 09-18-2012 05:41 PM

I am going to add green and a small strip of cranberry sashing and will send sashing along for others to add.

Difergie 09-19-2012 03:59 AM

I just love your colors ssnare! Am looking forward to working on it!
Ctipton-you will do just fine!

ssnare 09-19-2012 04:49 AM

Oops, Just to clarify, the row is to be 60 1/2" by 12 1/2" not 60" x 12 1/2".
Thank you Defergi.

ctipton 09-19-2012 12:33 PM

Okay Ladies what do I do first. Do I get the fabric I want for the whole quilt and send it along and everybody can make the blocks they want out of my fabric yes No ???

Difergie 09-19-2012 01:45 PM

Usually everyone uses their own fabrics. If you want to send sashing for the rows in between, that helps to unify things. In row robins you never know what twists and turns will happen. Everyone has their own vision and that is what makes them fun. If you do scrappy, you could go with the traditional all colors or maybe ask for warm or cool colors. The row you send in the beginning, kind of sets the tone for the whole quilt.

Qbee 09-19-2012 03:04 PM

Question.....it's a very long story but would any of you ladies be willing to switch groups with another lady?
I'd really appreciate it :D

ctipton 09-19-2012 09:05 PM

ctipton 09-19-2012 09:46 PM

ssnare 09-20-2012 08:18 AM

ctipton, I think cat attack is great. I do not think Dragonfly Nana is in our group though.

ssnare 09-20-2012 08:23 AM

It looks like we have decided on a name. We are the Grrr-8s. Yeah! In cat attack, are they angry cats, funky cats, or whatever cats we can come up with?

ctipton 09-20-2012 04:38 PM

ssnare - I'm just outside of Wichita, so not terribly far from you in the grand scheme of things! ;)

What I am thinking for mine.....and I wish I knew what it was called...I've heard it called "stack & slash" I think. I have no idea how to explain it, but this is one that I made with the technique. I like it because it's really easy and it works up quickly and looks random. I can find the instructions to send along - I just have to dig them out of the pile.

I love the idea of cats..

ssnare 09-21-2012 05:15 AM

AmyB is that paper piecing? OMG, I have never done pp. And it looks like you have curves in it. I do not know if I can do those. Yikes, it is beautiful though. I will definitely need instructions. I sure hope I can do something you will like.

Ok ladies, I got the address list and emails today and sent an email to each one of you and they all came back undeliverable. Please pm me with all of your information and I will try again. Thanks, Sherry

Difergie 09-21-2012 05:20 AM

I received my email...
All my info was correct

AmyB 09-21-2012 05:22 AM

No, there are no curves at all - and not paper pieced either. Honestly, I have never done paper piecing!

Let me see if I can explain it. You take your squares of fabric that you start with and stack them all up nice and neat. Then you take a piece of paper or cardboard or something and draw a shape on it. For 5 squares, I believe it would be a 4-sided shape, but not a square. You put that in the middle, then use the ruler and rotary cutter and cut the entire way across the pile of squares following one side, then you put that pile of fabric aside. Then you cut along the next side of the shape, and put that pile aside. You keep going until you just have the middle pile that is the center. Then you take one piece of fabric off of the top of that pile and put it on the bottom. Then you take 2 pieces off of the top of the next pile and put those on the bottom of their pile. Then the same thing with the next pile, only you move 3 to the bottom, and so on. So then if you look at all of the piles together, you still have a stack of 5 squares, but each piece of the square is a different color, and you just sew the squares back together again.

Like I said, it's really hard to explain - but it's super simple to do. The instructions have pictures. :)

Oh, and I did get the email - it came through for me just fine.

ctipton 09-21-2012 04:05 PM

Amy B I love your quilt ssnare i sent you a pm with email and snail mail Also still looking for more cats yaehhhhh
Difergie do you have cat patterns???

Difergie 09-21-2012 04:07 PM

I have some miniature pieced cat blocks I received in a swap that need a home...but personally I don't have a pattern
I have seen them though.

ssnare 09-21-2012 08:07 PM

ctipton, I saw some funny cat material. Would that be ok?

ctipton 09-21-2012 09:33 PM

you bet thanks to you ss and difergie So How do we start this thing???

ssnare 09-22-2012 07:49 AM

ctipton. Start picking out your fabric. Plan what you want to do for your row. What I do, after I have my ideas is look for fabric (of course, we all know how much fun that is) LOL. Then I sketch out my plan on 12 1/2" square graft paper that I get from Joanns in the quilting section. Then if I am making 12 1/2" blocks, that takes 5 blocks this size to make a 60 1/2" row, I plan what I want to do in each block. Then I start making my blocks. Sometimes I have a center block that may be different and 2 side blocks that are the same and 2 other side blocks that are the same. But sometimes, each block is different or spells out something. This is where your imagination takes you. Then start sewing each block. When you have each block sewn together, sew the blocks into a row. Show pictures as you progress. We love pictures of everyone's progress and it is nice for you to keep a record.
Then, when you are done with your row and it is ready to be mailed to the next person, notify that person to see if they are ready for your row. Then, when you mail yours and someone mails theirs to you, you look at their row and let it talk to you. Then you decide what you want to add to their row and start the process over again. Eventually, you get your top back and you get to see the progress as it moves around and as it grows. That's what it is all about!

Difergie 09-22-2012 03:45 PM
