Scrappy and White 9 Patch Block Swap... signups close Sept 20!

1 Attachment(s)
9 Patch Block Swap

Blocks due by Oct. 10.

Join us for a new and different 9 Patch Block Swap, a very fun way to use up your scraps! Please read this entire post! The blocks are different than the last two 9P swaps. If you send the wrong blocks, I can't swap them and will have to return them to you. :( Read the rules.

Sign ups require a commitment to communicate. You will be required to check in with your thread at least once a week, so we know you are still involved. Post your pics of blocks or anything else you are working on, reply to other’s pictures and comments, or chat a bit. The nice community in this group is dependent on all of you posting and sharing. :o

Also, if I need to pm or email you, I expect you to respond in a timely manner, (not longer than 48 hours). Failure to do so may result in your being banned from future 9P swaps.

Sign ups are open until Sept 20. Blocks must be here in my hands no later than Oct 10.

We are swapping sets of 10 blocks per bag, up to 10 bags. Each bag must contain 10 completely different blocks (no fabric repeats in a bag.) This shouldn't be a problem if you are using scraps. Each bag can contain the same set of fabrics, just no duplicates in any one bag. I need the bags ready to swap bag-for-bag.

The finished blocks will be 6.5” and will be made of white and scrappy 2.5" squares. Use what, in your best judgement, is true white. Not cream. Not white on white. Just true white. Please use a white that is at least as thick as your fabrics (not see-thru). The blocks should contain 5 scrappy squares and 4 white squares in the north, south, east and west positions. The configuration must be like this or I can't swap your blocks:

You will need quart size bags (not sandwich) to accommodate the size of the blocks. Please put your board name on each bag. Before mailing, put all your bags into a big gallon bag with your name and address clearly on the bag, along with your board name. Then ship in either a tyvek or padded flat rate envelope. No paper envelopes, as they don’t hold up. Be sure to include your return postage! It’s $7.25 now for the padded flat rate envelopes I will use for U.S. shipping. I will not be making change this time, so if you send $8 or $10 I will consider it a donation towards the printer ink and tape fund.

Do not send me stamps or stamped envelopes! My P.O. requires that I check those in, in person, at the post office counter, and I am not going to the post office. I make my labels online and mail from home. So send carefully concealed cash in your package. I've never had a problem with that yet.

Please use good fabric in your blocks… like you would hope to receive. 100% cotton, only. No thin fabrics. If you have to starch it to make it acceptable, don’t use it for this swap. Prewashed or not really doesn’t matter in pieces this size, so just use what you have.

Your finished blocks must measure 6.5”. In a follow-up post I will tell you how to insure they do. Most people did great with this last time… let’s strive to get 6.5" blocks. If they come out smaller, it is your responsibility to adjust seams or remake them, to get them to 6.5". The center square should be 2" square.

As always, regular Quilting Board swap rules apply: https://www.quiltingboard.com/member...-a-t20154.html

Sign up by pm’ing me your real name and address, and your email address.

Let’s have fun again!

SBG

Please read the next post for tips on getting a 6.5" square!

How to Make Perfect 6.5" 9 Patches
Many of you are pros at making perfect 9 patches, but for those who struggle, I have some tips. Blocks must be 6.5" square to be eligible for this swap (so they fit with everyone else's...), and not just because I am mean. :D So how do we get that?

Start by squaring off a straight cut across your fabric or scrap. When you cut your 2.5" strips or squares, pay attention that your ruler line is on the fabric, not the mat. Then get your true 2.5" cut.

I have found that I have to sew a scant quarter inch seam. If I sew a full 1/4, my blocks come out too small. Every time. I have a scant quarter foot on my Juki that I use, but if you machine does not, you need to experiment and find a line on your machine bed, or place a piece of tape where that scant quarter line is. Then follow it!

After sewing, I press to the dark, and my little checkerboard 9-patch will have beautifully nesting seams. I also check to see that the center block or strip is measuring exactly 2", as it should.

When cross cutting strip sets, again square off a straight line perpendicular to the long edges and measure from there, with the ruler line again on the fabric and not the mat.

There are online tutes about how to spin seams at your four intersections, if you need them. It is not required that you spin your seams.

Lastly, take your 6.5" ruler and place it on your pressed block and sliver trim the edges. If something doesn't quite reach the 6.5" edge, you may have to pick open a couple of little seams and alter them slightly. You wouldn't believe how often I do this, so I can send the right size block.

Remember, 6.5"... not 6.25" or 6.75" or 6.5"x 6.25".

I wouldn't miss this for the world, count me in! Sending my pm.

NZquilter 08-30-2018 11:35 AM

Whoopie! Another round of 9-patches! I just send my PM. Thank you for hosting again, Sewbiz!

mim 08-30-2018 12:07 PM

Oh Boy!!! I love scrappy stuff. Count me in. I have just started sewing again -- broken neck brace didn't allow much I could do. I should get it off next week. Yeaaa!! I will PM you

Mim

sewbizgirl 08-30-2018 12:57 PM

Ok, we have three already! Four, including me. When we have 10 or so I will start posting the list. Let the block making begin!

givio 08-30-2018 08:15 PM

Oh! This will be a fun thread to read!
Invite all your friends to join! :-) There are so many many many ways to use 6" (finished) 9patches!

obrienwv 08-31-2018 02:50 AM

Yes, yes - count me in! Hope to complete 50 - using Kona white.

Honchey 08-31-2018 06:01 AM

Yes I'm in too! I already have about 50 done using Kona white.

And I'm measuring every which way possible!

Jannie 08-31-2018 06:42 PM

This sounds like a fun swap. Does anyone have quilt examples on how they have used these 9 patches?

NZquilter 09-01-2018 06:36 AM

Jannie, there are so many ways to use these blocks! You can look through the past two 9-patch blocks swaps Sewbizgirl has hosted this year to see what other members have created. Or you can go on Pinterest or Google and simply type in " nine patch quilts ". There is the Single Irish Chain pattern, the Sisters Choice pattern, Snow Balls and 9-patches, on point layout, and many more... So many ideas! Hope you join us! :)

I found one on Pinterest that I really liked. It was the 9-patch blocks and Friendship Star block alternating. I might do that. https://pin.it/ej6zsruawidlmk

sewbizgirl 09-01-2018 08:03 AM

I was planning on using mine in an Irish Chain, too. I really like that one with the alternate friendship stars! It's a fun quilt that really lends itself to scraps.

Cheesehead 09-01-2018 08:43 AM

NZQ, that is a pretty quilt, love that variation!

sunrise450 09-01-2018 11:16 AM

I want to do this swap, have to purchase Kona fabric before I PM you though. Can anyone tell me how much fabric I should buy?

sewbizgirl 09-01-2018 11:28 AM

Just taking a wild guess... but maybe a yard or yard and a half?

NZquilter 09-01-2018 03:11 PM

Sunrise, I'm finding I am getting approximately 50 9-patch blocks out of 1yd. I liked the feel and weight and the weave of the Walmart Waverly 100% cotton white carried at my local Wally-world. I know not every Walmart is the same, but my one sells fabric by the one yard bundle, so I bought two of them.

Hopefully no one minds that I'm not buying Kona cotton?

Honchey 09-01-2018 04:37 PM

generally speaking you can cut 15-17 2.5" squares from a width of fabric depending on how wide it is .

givio 09-01-2018 06:17 PM

NZquilter, I don't mind, I like Waverly fabric. :-)

Oh, absolutely not! It’s up to you to decide what to use. There’s no requirement to use Kona. I just ask that your fabrics not be too thin. I’m sure we will end up with a nice mix of fabrics.

aborning 09-02-2018 06:16 PM

Count me in. I hav e been waiting for this swap. I will PM you. I will be making an irish chain pattern. I love scrappy Irish Chain.

This is a top I finished last spring before I was hit with shingles (Please GET YOUR NEW SHOTS). It was on the cover of a quilting magazine. I loved the way it looks like curves

Beautiful quilt, mim!

Here are a few blocks I have started on. I have so many small odd shaped scraps that I am cutting into 2.5" squares for these blocks... This may take awhile! :) But it couldn't be a funner way to use them up.

sewbizgirl 09-03-2018 05:11 PM

Pretty quilt, Mim! Several of us used that very same pattern with our blocks from the last 9p swap! We had two red ones, and a blue. I love that pattern. And sorry to hear about the shingles.

NZ, great start on some very pretty blocks! Thank you for the pictures, ladies.

moonrise 09-04-2018 01:08 AM

I made my blocks several weeks ago, but it looks like I'll have to sit this one out after all. Hubby's work hours are being significantly cut, which means that "play money" will be pretty much non-existent for awhile. If things change before the sign-up deadline, I'll definitely join if I can, but for the moment, I'm having to cut way back on my swaps. :(

Oh, that's sad... especially since you've already made your blocks. That darn postage is expensive! Maybe you can sew along with us, Moon, and show us what you are making... even if you don't end up swapping.

Hope things pick up for you and your husband. <3

mim 09-04-2018 09:46 AM

Another thread today mentions a Jacks Chain quilt -- I wasn't familiar with it so I went to google. It uses 9 patches and a triangle to make circles. It is the perfect block for this swap to use.

obrienwv 09-04-2018 12:30 PM

I agree with Mim - Jack’s chain would be perfect for our swap - lots of decisions to make. Has anyone ever made this pattern?

redstilettos 09-04-2018 12:51 PM

Oh.....don't do it, Chris....don't do it.....you're busy......but oh I want to!

Okay. Count me in. The devil made me do it. Okay, that and the thought of doing a Jack's Chain (bucket list pattern for me!)

Besides, I have "worked" with sewbiz before and she's fun :D

Do I have to say how many packages/baggies I'll be swapping, or can I just keep sewing until I run out of time?

Welcome, Red! No, you don't have to say how many you will be sending. Just send as many sets as you want to swap (or have time for)!

sewbizgirl 09-04-2018 02:18 PM

I love Jack's Chain too! But those of you looking at that pattern might want to be aware that it uses 1.5" squares for the 9Ps, rather than 2.5" like we will be making. Those are 3" finished 9Ps and ours are 6" finished. You can adapt to the bigger size 9P, but you'll have to draw up your own center hexagon template, and you will have less "rings" in your quilt, because everything is bigger. If that's ok with you, go for it! I might too... Either that or an Irish Chain.

sewbizgirl 09-04-2018 02:21 PM

OK, we have 10 swappers and I promised to post the list at 10...

1. Cheesehead
2. NZQuilter
3. Mim
4. obrienwv
5. Honchey
6. Aborning
7. Terriamn
8. AnnieQuilts
9. RedStilletos
10. Sewbizgirl

Plenty of room for more swappers!

NZquilter 09-04-2018 02:57 PM

I found a pattern for Jack's Chain that uses 6" finished 9 -patches if anyone is interested. https://www.quiltdesignnw.com/q140-j...lt-pattern.htm I too love this pattern!

redstilettos 09-04-2018 03:41 PM

Thanks for the link NZ!

Would this one work, too?

SewBiz - I replied to your PM, but I don't think the entire message went through, so I sent a second PM. <3

I wrote you back just now. :) It took three tries to get the whole message to go through, so disregard the first two incomplete PMs. The same issue happened when trying to PM SewBiz earlier, too. It kept cutting off the majority of my message.

Cheesehead 09-05-2018 03:57 AM

My 10 sets of 9 patches are finished, I worked on them during the Virtual Quilting weekend.

We are in Wisconsin Dells right now closing our place here for the season but the weather isn't cooperating, then it's back home to pack up. Hope to hit the road next week for coastal Alabama, now that Gordon has moved on through.

SBG, looks like Gordon is heading your way!

redstilettos 09-05-2018 04:52 AM

Cheesehead,
We go to the Dells every year or two. It's almost a requirement when in Wisconsin, isn't it? LOL

Maybe next summer we can meet up and do a sewing weekend :)

NZquilter 09-05-2018 04:59 AM

I have three sets done so far. I can't believe you are done already, Cheesehead! Wow!

I was in Wal-Mart yesterday and the fabric department had over ordered fabric bolts. They were clearing some out at $1.50 per yard! I bought a bolt of white. That will last me a long time hopefully!

sewbizgirl 09-05-2018 06:04 AM

Good work, you 6" block Jack's Chain sleuths! Love the way it looks!

So Moonrise, I have you down as joining! For those of you who only posted on the thread but have not sent me a pm to join, please do so! Read that first post in it's entirety, please.

You never know what you will find marked down at Walmart!
