Yay! So glad I could be in the swap this month after all - Thank you Krystyna! I have your package ready to go with this month's Amish DQ and the QAYG block for your soldier friend. I'm including an American Quilter magazine with a really interesting article about "Pot Holder Quilts" made for Civil War soldiers. It's a lot like what you are doing for your friend. They also had an article about Broderie Perse quilting, something I had never hear of until KrisB talked about it on this swap.

You know how you wash big quilts before gifting, so they will look cuddlier? This is not such a good idea with doll quilts. Of course I had to find out the hard way on your quilt. It does look cuddly, but also a bit wonkier. I still like it though and hope you do too!

I'm sure I'll love it. Just a heads up ... I do not wash quilts ... so you might get some decorative dog hair.
(Just kidding. I hope.:o)

Wow! Lucky you. I hope you have a wonderful trip. Have a slice of shoofly pie for me!

By the way, I don't know what happened, but I missed a LOT of posts. Somehow my subscription to this thread got turned off! So ... sorry for all the posts.
I've been happily piecing while doing a nightmarish AARP defensive driving course online. Story: my son's fiance told us that there was an express defensive driving course at the restaurant bar where she works. Yes, a DD class at a bar. The cost was $50. Well, always looking for a bargain, I looked up the AARP class online. Looked like it was $12.95 so I proceeded to sign up. Nope $24.95 if you're in New York. Oh well. Fast forward to last week. DH, son and FDIL go to the bar. They're home in an HOUR! Seems the instructor was a friend of the bar owner so all they did was fill out forms, pay the money and that was that.
Meanwhile, I am slogging through the most hellaciously boring class that requires you to telephone in a voice recognition a couple of times for every segment. I guess that's in case someone decides it is too horrid to do and pays their child to finish it for them.
I should have paid the $50.

Krystyna 08-01-2012 12:13 PM

Anyone up for sending out a couple of Angel quilts? I have a few that Chele sent me made by others, but in some ways they just don't seem appropriate to send out.
Donna H-M and Mariposa's partners disappeared. *sigh*

QuilterMomma 08-01-2012 12:32 PM

i learned in my Amish QUilt book that there are three main Amish colonies and each one had their way of colors. The mennonite colony usually used dominent back and the Lancaster colony did not use black but a deep brown. just an fyi from what I read last night.

I know they sponsor classes that are live, but this one. EEEEEEEKKKK!!!!! Save me!!!
There are videos of old geezers who have to be 400 years old complaining about how young people drive too fast. Then there are "exercises" to make sure you are "fit to drive" -- these consist of flexing your ankle and turning your head from side to side. My son thinks these are hilarious and makes a point of "exercising" in front of me before getting into his car to go to work.

Juanita- have a few books on Amish quilts, but I have never made one either so it will be fun.....whatever colors you choose will be great. Linny

BuzzinBumble 08-02-2012 05:27 AM

Nana Val - It is good to hear you are feeling much better about things. And really nice that Krystyna has a partner for you so you can be in the swap this month.

Paula - your colors looked terrific! Can't wait to see what you do with them.

Linda - that quote "My husband lets me buy all the fabric I can hide." cracks me up all the time and it is also somewhat true. He can't complain about what he does not realize happened. LOL!

Krystyna - a quilt isn't as cozy unless it has some pet hairs sewn in to make it softer! :D

Well i'm going to be gone for a couple of weeks on a trip to Vancouver Island, BC with our whole family. It's a rarity to be able to lasso all three of our kids. Hope you all have a ball here on the DQ swap! When I get back I want to see a lot of beautiful little quilts being shown off here!

Krystyna 08-02-2012 05:50 AM

Lara, have a wonderful time! I hope it doesn't snow! We'll miss you.

BuzzinBumble 08-02-2012 06:12 AM

Awww thanks! I'm going to miss you all too - what a funny and nice bunch of ladies we have here!

SNOW? Guess we better add hoodies to the suitcases!

Krystyna 08-02-2012 06:36 AM

Late sign up partner news ....
Dragonfly Nana has taken on an extra partner this month (*clap*clap*clap) and she is none other than GinnyMc -- NinaLemon's mom!
Welcome aboard Ginny!
Handi and Eagleoneowl2u2 are partners ....
And last but certainly not least ....
Tam...Moo and Nana Val are partners!

Oops. One more. The lovely MsCupid804 was going to send an angel quilt to Donna H-M (after all Cupid IS an angel) but Donna wants to make one for her ... so ... TAH DAH ... new partners!

Many thanks to the angels who are sending quilts all over the country!
And to those who disappeared .... well, my momma always said if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all ... so .... can ya hear the silence?

Oh, and just so everyone is clear on this ... it is written in
STONE. So no one even THINK about changing anything.

QuilterMomma 08-02-2012 06:50 AM

Oh so sorry ladies, I gave wrong info yesterday regarding the three different Amish counties. According to my book "Amish Wall Quilts", the three main counties are Lancaster County, The Midwest, and Mifflin. My bad, oh just spank me for speaking up. I guess it was a memopause moment yesterday. I just got excited in making my little DQs.

Elisabrat 08-02-2012 07:05 AM

I can't help but sneak a moment here to read about how excited everyone is before I go quilt. Its inspiration and heartwarming to "feel" the joy that these projects bring. Not everyones will be perfect or as good as the top quilters here can do but this is so fun I can not believe in the end that that matters much. The time and energy and goodwill that go into this brings me joy on both sides.. giving and receiving. I can't wait to find mine in the mailbox! Off to sew everyone have a beautiful day. A toasty 90 here today. I am sure hoping for a bit of relief. Maybe next week. Thank God for air conditioning. Imagine this weather in a darned long dress with petticoats (a true lady wore no less than 5)? Uh shorts and a tank top here I come! A fallen woman surely. sigh...

QuilterMomma 08-02-2012 07:08 AM

Oh so funny Elisabrat. And one more thing, to think they baked bread in this heat, working over a hot stove is not my idea of a nice day, then they worked the gardens, tended kids, did laundry all in this miserably wonderful heat. We are actually cold today, a mere 79 is predicted. I finally get a break from the air conditioning. Yep, I should be down in the warm area.

Oh don't be a sissy! Get into the Amish spirit and strap on a bonnet to go with those long skirts and petticoats!

starshine 08-02-2012 07:42 AM

I'll miss you this month Krystyna. The final area of my thumb wound finally closed last Thursday, but all the skin is still tender. Maybe I'll be back in September..hmmm hear the chords to that song from our childhood....by the Happenings...

rwquilts 08-02-2012 08:42 AM

I read your post about me Ms Krystyna! LOL! Okay...everyone...listen up... I AM THE GUILTY PERSON WHO DOESN'T LIKE TO SEW WITH SOLIDS AND DIDN'T SIGN UP FOR AUGUST! Whew! Glad I got that off my chest...feels so much better! :) :) :) And if you want another chuckle, go to July's DQ thread and see what I got from Ms Krystyna yesterday in the mail! LOL! I am lurking here though and will admire what you all are making, and join with ya'all in September, assuming the theme won't be sewing with solids? Perhaps you girls can make a believer out of me yet? :):)

QuilterMomma 08-02-2012 08:58 AM

Now, rw, you know you did not "have" to sew in solids. You could have used those tone on tones in a muted state or just used those brights, dipped them in tea dye so they looked old.

Krystyna 08-02-2012 09:02 AM

I would respond but I am in the middle of the AARP course and determining if I am too feeble to drive ...

Krystyna 08-02-2012 11:00 AM

Starshine, I hope you heal soon. That has to be so painful.
RWQuilts, once you see our lovlies you'll be so sorry you didn't jump in... besides which, you KNOW it's always optional!

Need to go take the final test for the AARP class. I actually fell dead asleep in the middle of the segment on how to know when you should stop driving. I should be embarrassed, but I'm not. It is soooooo borrrrring!!!!

And now just to let you know that today has been a very trying day in terms of dealing with people who went off the radar with regard to their quilt obligations. I've never had a day like this yet. I am very close to inviting someone else to enjoy the aggravation.

Lv2sew2011 08-02-2012 11:28 AM

Oh if I get so old to have to take another driving course I think I will just pass and let someone else drive me...LOL I wouldn't want to give someone road rage. LOL !!! because I drive to slow...Sometimes I get so mad when an older person pulls out in front of me and goes way slower than I'm driving it drives me nuts. But you have to remember I used to drive a Concrete Mixer Truck and had to many close calls because of this. We can't stop that big truck on a dime especially when it's loaded with concrete...Every time it happen I would hollar STUPID STUPID PEOPLE...I wasn't worried for me I was worried for them! :-(

If I didn't get 10% off the skyhigh NYS insurance rates, I can assure you I wouldn't do this awful course. I thought sitting in a classroom for six or seven hours was bad .... this is worse!!! I should have paid the $50 for the express class.
