Should anything come up and you need to withdraw from the swap, just let me know.Life happens sometimes.

***NEW***

I have a request. I am requesting that each swapper enclose One extra block in the swap theme. This block can be 6.5 or 9.5 or 12.5 inch square. This is a just in case block. In case the mail messes up and things go awry. If I need them, I will use them. I hate to disappoint anyone. If I don't need them, I will hold a drawing 2 weeks after the swap blocks have been mailed out, and whoever wins, I will send them the extra blocks. I will take care of the postage. I do thank you for helping me out.

Now, let's share early fabric pulls, ideas, and blocks and have a little fun.

Hope to see you on our Spring Churn Dash Themed 12.5 Block Swap adventure.

Armylady2012 10-23-2017 11:45 AM

YEA, I got approval to host this swap hope you all will come join me.

Just a few notes, I made the start date of the signup for 1 November 2017, but if you want to go ahead and start signing up I will make a participation list like I did on the last swap and post it regularly so everyone can see who is interested in joining me on this adventure.

I have also gotten some suggestions for the background and the colors of the churn dash. This is what Cuppy suggested.
I also do agree that a color theme would be nice, help make it flow and be consistent, like using cream or white tone on tone backgrounds, and maybe choose two main colors to use, such as gray and yellow purple and yellow or red and pink, any 2 consistent colors, as long as they read that color and also use other colors with it. It is nice to identify a quilt by its color like the yellow and gray one on the bed. You can also add some applique to churn dash, like flowers, butterflies, or an animal. Thereceiver can add to them also, once they receive them and add their own colors, lots you can do with churn dash.

Thank you Cuppy for the suggestions. Ladies what do you all think do you want to do Cream or White tone on tone for the background and do you have a suggestions for 2 colors that we should use or we can go creators options.

you can post here or PM on what you think would work the best.

JayneW 10-23-2017 11:59 AM

Yay! Another swap, Armylady count me in!

I'm open to either cream OR white backgrounds but don't have an opinion about the other colors. (Maybe just say "pastels" to keep with the spring theme).

I do have a question though, should the entire block be just two colors or can the "churn dash" part be more than one color? Also, can you post a "pattern"... I've seen churn dashes made from different proportions and want to make sure I use the correct one!

Armylady2012 10-23-2017 12:08 PM

Jayne Welcome you are the 1st to sign up. I would think that the Churn Dash is of one color but I am not for sure still kind of new at the quilting aspect, I will see what some of the other ladies think some of them have been sewing longer than me, you all are the ones teaching me what I am learning.

I have a book that has patterns in it. It shows what size to cut the pieces and shows a picture of how to lay it out but not specific instructions on how to put the block together, I just use the layout picture to put mine together for the winter swap and they came out good.

NZquilter 10-23-2017 12:44 PM

By "Spring" churn dashes do you mean fabric themed wise? Or colors?

Armylady2012 10-23-2017 12:47 PM

We are all still trying to work out the fabric we all want to use, I am thinking that it could be either, that is what I was thinking when I made up the announcement, but some of the ladies are making suggestions on whether to do 2 colors like (Purple and yellow, pink and red, or etc) Do you have any suggestions.

NZquilter 10-23-2017 01:00 PM

I was hoping for florals maybe? That way we can use our stashes without going out to buy for the swap. I think we all have florals? (I do!:)) Narrowing the swap down to special colors will make it harder for some to join. I like the scrappy look myself, with everyone's differnt fabrics and colors in one quilt. A common background fabric is a good idea too. That will balance out the differnt fabrics. Just my two cents worth...

Belfrybat 10-23-2017 01:11 PM

I'm thinking about this, but not if we have to use Priority mail. First class mail is tracked and is about half the price. The last swap I was in on another board it cost me $3.70 to mail 15 blocks. Double that for return postage and it makes a real difference.

I like the idea of spring colours on a cream background instead of specifying just two colours.

Armylady2012 10-23-2017 01:17 PM

Ladies I would hate for anyone to have to buy fabric in order to participate in this swap. So this is what we are going to do, lets take a vote and see what everyone is interested in using in the churn dash. Do you want to use Floral with spring colors, or use 2 colors. The more I think about it I think the background needs to be White tone on tone (I am sure everyone has some of that in their stash). If you all would rather use a cream color that just let me know and if everyone agrees then that is what we will do. I will see what everyone if saying and by the week end I will post what the final decision is. I hope this will help everyone out.

Armylady2012 10-23-2017 01:21 PM

Belfrybat I am Ok with however everyone wants to mail their blocks just as long as they enclose the postage for the return of the blocks and you have tracking coming to me and going back to you. I am just use to using the free flat rate envelopes from the post office with the cost being $6.65 and with free tracking. I think I am going to call the post office and see if there is a cheaper way to mail with free tracking.

Belfrybat 10-23-2017 02:37 PM

I vote for spring florals. I prefer a cream background but am OK with white as well.

First class has free tracking for packages up to 13 ounces. Over 13 ounces bumps you up to Priority. For both first class and priority the return envelope can't have tracking already on it -- you do that when you mail them back. Both are free.

Belfrybat 10-23-2017 02:42 PM

BTW, are the dimensions on this churn dash what you have in mind? I've seen some where the center square is larger or smaller, but this is the one I usually make.

http://www.quilterscache.com/C/ChurnDashBlock.html

Armylady2012 10-23-2017 04:21 PM

Belfrybat this pattern looks good to me just as long as it comes out as a unfinished 12.5 block. I have a pattern book that I am going to be making a copy of the pattern and posting but I do believe the measurements are the same.

Libster 10-23-2017 05:10 PM

Me, me, me! WOW, or white tone on tone, would show spring colors well. I also have some COC if that's what the majority would like. I would be happy with any pastel spring florals or prints. If we used florals and prints, everyone should pretty well be covered without having to buy fabrics. Just my thoughts, but I'll be happy with whatever is decided.
I like the two color suggestion, the background with one other color for the churn dash. Choosing specific colors for the churn dash would mean buying new fabric for some of us.
Thanks for posting so quickly!

MaryMo 10-23-2017 05:25 PM

I'd like to join this after all decisions are made. If I have a vote, I like the idea of using florals in spring colors with the white tone on tone backgrounds.

Armylady2012 10-23-2017 05:39 PM

MaryMo everyone has a vote and yours is very welcome. We all need to be on the same page so we all are happy with what we are making for the swap, I want everyone to be happy and enjoy making their blocks.

givio 10-23-2017 05:56 PM

Belfrybat, I was able to get a tracking number for my self-addressed return priority envelope. The postman used a black marker to cross out the envelope's bar code, then he used a bar code sticker he took from his drawer to stick over the original printed bar code. He scanned the sticker bar code, charged me for the stamps, and circled the tracking number on my receipt, which also indicated the tracked package was going to my home location. This method worked fine and I could track the return package. I think you just have to write your address on the envelope, and ask for return tracking of it. Or-- maybe I just have a sweet postman?

I don't prefer white/on white or white/on off-white/cream fabric. 'Cream colored' can have a wide range, depending on someone's interpretation: off-white, beige, light tan, taupe, etc. Do you mean a solid cream fabric? Or a blender? Blenders or neutral prints often give a nice interest. Whatever is chosen, the background is sure not to match up from quilter to quilter anyway! It's just a case of if you like how the finished blocks play together, or not. In the end, it's always personal opinion...

Some of the most common backgrounds are white or cream. Would you consider something different for a change? Pale blue instead? Like the sky! Or pale green? Like the new plants of Spring! Or pale yellow? Like sunshine!

I love this pattern! I agree, there surely are lots of variations. If you are considering embroidery or appliqued centers, probably any size pieces to make the block would be fine-- as the blocks might not all be the same anyway, considering these other additions. But if you want all the churn dash patterns to be the same, then specific measurements need to be given...

Floral fabric sounds like a lovely option! I agree, with a two color option there will be people who either don't have the color, or don't like it. I love the scrappy look of various prints. So, I'd vote for any print goes. The churn dash is not a complicated block. This is only 17 pieces in a 12" block. Maybe it would be fun to have the freedom to use more than one print? For example the triangles one color and the bricks another color.

givio 10-23-2017 06:19 PM

I looked at the quilterscache link that Belfrybat gave. Look at the difference between these two examples they have! :-)
White -- http://www.quilterscache.com/images1...rnstateill.jpg
Quilter's choice of colors/scrappy -- http://www.quilterscache.com/BomLott...otto_Sept.html (not a quilt, but you get the idea.)

Sorry for the long post... I seem to always have lots of thoughts, and I like to write... :-)

jlt37869 10-23-2017 06:24 PM

I hope to join and my vote would be for 12.5" blocks using the quilter's cache pattern and made with 2 fabrics - WOW background and pastel solids, blenders, and florals/prints (that read as a solid). Also, no holiday or juvenile fabrics.

NZquilter 10-24-2017 03:54 AM

The quilterscache pattern is the churn dash block I'm fimiliar with too. I agree that white, or WOW or cream background will be nice. I love flowers, so I have tons of floral prints. This is my vote:) Excited to see what everyone votes for!

Lovely quilt, Cuppy! That is an inspiration for us!

bearisgray 10-24-2017 06:59 AM

If I was participating - which I'm not - so perhaps I should not say anything -

I would want everyone to be using the same pattern- I just looked up "Churn Dash" in "Enclyclopedia Of Pieced Quilt Patterns" compiled by Barbara Brackman - and there were four blocks with the name of Churn Dash.

A couple of those blocks had several other names, too - so it could be confusing.

So - I am not sure how much "variety" the participants want - or are expecting.

For myself, I would prefer the blocks to be the same as far as pattern and size.

bearisgray 10-24-2017 07:10 AM

I think wildyard made all these blocks for this quilt

One option for shipping that saves a bit and can include tracking is to use Paypal shipping - if you use a Flatrate envelope it is really easy - https://www.paypal.com/shiplabel/create/
On the flat rate envelopes it saves about $1 in shipping. I also save all of the poly envelopes that things come in and reuse them for shipping. I just weigh things and use paypal or take them to the PO. If you use the paper Flat rate envelopes please use additional tape on them. They are much flimsier than they used to be and usually don't make the trip in one piece any longer. The padded flat rate envelopes fare much better, but have to be ordered from the PO.

Nesie 10-24-2017 07:46 AM

I would like to join this swap! I am not new to the board but I just retired in June so I can devote more time to a swap now. I am fine with either wow or cream, although I've seen many Churn Dashes with Cream and since it is such an old design it seems to work well. However, I agree with Givio in that everyone's interpretation of colors can be very subjective. I absolutely love the "floral" idea, but I will go with the consensus. Armylady thank you!

rbwiese 10-24-2017 07:48 AM

I failed to mention that I like the spring floral idea - is the center square to the solid or can it be embroidered or a fussy cut floral? Plus I have never done a block swap here - is the fabric to be pre-washed?

terriamn 10-24-2017 07:57 AM

I would prefer wow and spring florals but to me spring florals aren’t just Pastels, think of the deep purple of the Iris etc. I would love to see the swap with either a coc or wow with florals Churn Dash. That gives us lots of options.

bearisgray 10-24-2017 07:59 AM

co = cream on cream?

terriamn 10-24-2017 08:01 AM

Coc is cream on cream

bearisgray 10-24-2017 08:01 AM

This is a great tutorial for one version of a Churn Dash block:

https://www.quiltingboard.com/tutori...al-t73577.html

zozee 10-24-2017 10:41 AM

Can I be interested without committing yet?

My vote would be:

White on white background (as I agree that "cream" means a lot of variation, not all of which look good with pastels or brights)

Spring colors (florals and prints both okay; with brights and pastels being okay)

I would say no novelty fabrics (ie no Easter motifs).

Armylady2012 10-24-2017 10:51 AM

zozee, yes you can be interested, The official signup doesn't start until 1 November 2017. I will be making a post of my decision on how we are going to do the block this weekend and that will be the final decision.

Armylady2012 10-24-2017 10:55 AM

Ladies I will let you know that the decision to use the pattern from the post (Look at Post #12) that Belfrybat posted is the pattern that we will be using, so go to that post and print the pattern out so you will have it. So that covers the pattern and the Size of the blocks is 12.5 Sq.

K-Roll 10-24-2017 12:34 PM

Armylady please put me in the swap...30 days huh lol...I need piecing practice & this pattern looks wonderful & fast.

I would have voted for cream but wow is fine, seems to be the consensus - will have to buy some (darn it haha) - however I do have just plain white so will that work?

I'm with terriann - I have a lot of florals, and they are not all pastel --- so I wouldn't want to use pastels only, though I think I could. I love magenta, for example, and 'deep' pastels.

attn bearisgray: thank you for the links. OMG the churn dash block-within-a-churn dash...it appeals to my tendency to make things more difficult than they need be ... :p And the tute, too.

Last, a great big thanks to you Maxie. This will be brilliant, and you're brilliant for hosting. I am way ahead of where I was, even in just the past swap as I've learned so much.

cuppy 10-24-2017 04:44 PM

Pattern choice is good, with great directions. I will make block this weekend. wow is only white , and someone mentioned creams can be a variety of variations.

cuppy 10-24-2017 04:45 PM

Add me to the churn dash swap

terriamn 10-25-2017 05:15 AM

K-roll like you I will need more WOW if that is the choice. Just used up a ton up it but I love looking for different white on white designs.

SuziSew 10-25-2017 06:24 AM

Got this link in my e-mail for quilting suggestions for churn dash blocks...seems timely. :)

Armylady2012 10-25-2017 07:53 AM

Sue Thank you for sharing the link, I found several that I like, but I agree they seem timely.

NZquilter 10-25-2017 08:14 AM

Thanks for the link, Sue! Yep, I found the quilting pattern I want to use now! I'll certainly save it.

Muse&Sew 10-25-2017 08:37 AM

I'd love the idea of the WOW with the spring florals.
