Through the Looking Glass Swap

Please use 100% pre-washed cotton (required). Select fabrics that will hold up to a lot of love, wear, tears, draggin', cuddlin', washing, and trips through the dryer. Fabrics that fray easily, or are fairly easy to see through are not good candidates for this swap.

What is our theme?

Today’s theme is Alice in Wonderland. You can use anything that makes you think of this great book/movie. It can be the original book; it could be any of the movies.
What size should the blocks be? Any size that can be divided by 3” when finished (12” x 12” is the max). Make sure you add in the seam allowance. Just add ˝ inch to the finished size. (Ex. Finished 3”x3” should be 3 ˝” x 3 ˝” unfinished)

Please send blocks to me in sets of 6. You may send as many sets as you would like to receive back, so if you send me 2 sets (12 blocks), you will get 12 different blocks back. I will be swapping all 6 of your blocks, so if you want to have one for yourself, be sure to make an extra! (Note: Since we are all sending in different sizes and different amounts, no one will end up with similar sets, so please feel free to make your six blocks in a set the same, similar, or different. It may be easier on you if they are the same, but so long as you mail to me in sets of 6, you can do whatever fits your stash!)

**Note** 3x3 finished size blocks (3.5 x 3.5 unfinished) are wonderful to have for this type of swap as they work great as filler. Since these smallies are quick and easy to make, I am making the rule that 2 of these count as 1 full size block. So in order to swap your smallies for another block, you must include 2 (so if you sent a whole set of the small fries, you'd need to send 12 small ones to get 6 blocks back). If you don't follow this rule, you may end up with fewer blocks than you had hoped for back. This makes it more fair for me to trade out your smallies for a larger-ie. Also, I don't mind a few of these, but let's not go crazy with these little guys.

I’m ready to mail, now what?
Please mark EACH ONE of your blocks with a little slip of paper pinned to each block, or a sticky label can be used, please put the label on the back as sometimes some of the 'sticky' adheres to the block itself. Or you may write in somewhere that it will not bleed through with a permanent thin pigma pen. Please include your real name AND Board name.
Please place each block set into a separate baggie before mailing. And put your real name AND board name on those. (Makes it easier on my end)

Send them to me along with an ADDRESSED RETURN Flat Rate Stamped envelope ($5.30) for returning blocks. No other return method will be accepted. DO NOT send me metered stamps. The post office doesn’t like it when I try to mail these after the date on them.

Sign-up will close on SUNDAY May 13th, PM me if you wish to join. In your PM let me know how many sets you are planning to make.

Blocks due to me by THURSDAY June 28th. Please plan mailing accordingly. They will be swapped and placed in the mail within one week. Any blocks received after June 28th will not be accepted and will be returned to you. There is plenty of time to sign up, and complete the blocks. It is not fair for those who do honor the deadline to be waiting and waiting and waiting.

Please review the rules that apply to all swaps. They apply to this swap, too. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-20154-1.htm

Please note, in particular, the rules for mailing and those regarding swappers who fail to fulfill their swap obligations.

Very cute idea! Tempting....

Ok Darla 03-10-2012 04:49 AM

I agree, very tempting!

TanyaL 03-10-2012 06:21 AM

If I want to participate, but find that when it is finished I don't want to make the quilt, would someone like my blocks to finish for a charity quilty?

athenagwis 03-11-2012 04:03 AM

Yay!! I am so happy you are doing this swap. Most likely I will be joining you, I just want to make a few examples first to see what I can come up with. :)

Cheers!
Rachel

What a neat idea! I'll give it some thought and will let you know. :)

bookworm 03-11-2012 07:12 AM

I'll be posting some examples this week.

nancia 03-12-2012 01:40 AM

Block #1 ...

bookworm 03-12-2012 07:31 PM

NICE moonrise! Did you create that pattern yourself?

moonrise 03-12-2012 08:08 PM

Thanks! No, I bought it at embroiderydesigns.com :)

moonrise 03-13-2012 04:17 AM

I watched the movie this morning ... an older version that's supposedly very close to the book. There really is a HUGE variety of blocks that could be made! :) So far I'm working on:

The Queen of Hearts (posted a pic of it previously)
Roses being painted red
A cupcake with a notation that says "Eat Me"
A mushroom with a blue caterpillar on it
Plus a couple of others that I'm still contemplating

Ya know ... when I joined this forum almost 2 years ago, I sure never expected that I'd make a block that says "Eat Me" on it! LOL! :D

nancia 03-13-2012 03:53 PM

now, moonrise, be sure and leave some images for the rest of us! lol:) ! i guess there are still more characters,:D, this is going to be fun!!

bookworm 03-13-2012 07:30 PM

I just got some fabric with playing cards on them I was thinking of using for some simple blocks. I'm also digitizing some images for embroidery. I found a bunch of tea pots and cups I was thinking of using as a reference for the "mad" tea party with mad hatter, march hare and the door mouse(?).

I was also thinking of raw edge applique for a caterpillar :)

What's everyone else thinking?

TanyaL 03-13-2012 07:36 PM

I'm beginning to think that this would be a fun quilt to have when a grand-daughter comes to spend the night. What background colors are the rest of you thinking about? I'm thinking black would show off everything very well.

There are over 80 characters in the story, if I counted correctly. Here's a list:

Okay, here are my 4 sets. The blue caterpillar/mushroom block is 12-1/2" square. The "Eat Me" cupcake block is 6-1/2" square. The Queen of Hearts is 6-1/2" square. And the rose/paintbrush block is 9-1/2" wide by 6-1/2" tall. I probably won't make any more sets except for my personal use. I just wanted to get these done before the Boomerang swap starts. Thanks for letting me play.

nancia 03-14-2012 12:46 AM

wow, moonrise! those are great!! guess i'd best start thinking about what i can do! do you have all 6 of each finished?

Thanks! :) Yes, they're all finished, but only because I happened to have a few free nights to sew, plus I needed to "escape" from some stress. I've got a ton of stuff on my mind right now ... mainly trying to get the insurance stuff straightened out so we can replace DH's hailstorm-totaled truck. Sewing is one of my "escapes". :)

Oh! Here are a couple of blocks I was experimenting with ... a "Drink Me" bottle and a pocketwatch. (I won't be using these two in the swap.)

nancia 03-14-2012 02:02 AM

sorry to hear about the truck! glad you have a way of de-stressing! you are going to have a wonderful quilt! hope you made a 7th one of each of your sets so you have them in your quilt. just too cute!!

bookworm 03-19-2012 06:13 PM

Pretty blocks :)

I ment to make examples but I've got a cold :( Its been a rough weekend

moonrise 03-20-2012 04:33 PM

Hope you feel better soonest!

When you get a minute, can you PM me your address? I've got these ready to go whenever you're ready for them. :)

Hope we get some more swappers! This is going to be a fun one! :D

nancia 03-20-2012 11:18 PM

You're welcome! Sounds like some great ideas!

I wonder if one of the mods could "sticky" this swap thread so that it stays on top with the other open swaps? It keeps scrolling off to page 2, where it's not as likely to be seen.

We need more folks to join in on the fun! :D

Ok Darla 03-21-2012 04:59 PM

I've been looking for patterns....don't give up on me yet.

bookworm 03-21-2012 05:03 PM

Keep in mind that it doesn't have to be strictly Alice in Wonderland. You can use cats, there are 3 in the books, tea cups/pots/sets..... mushrooms..... playing cards, hedgehogs, flamingos....... That's all I can come up with just off the top of my head. If I really thought about it I'm sure I could find more

moonrise 03-22-2012 06:54 PM

Mailing in the morning! :)

Ok Darla 03-24-2012 03:54 PM

great ideas, thanks

bookworm 03-25-2012 09:48 PM

Darn... life is being a pain in the rear and I still haven't be able to make some blocks. Do I have any more takers so far? :)

Ok Darla 03-26-2012 03:48 AM

This is really a swap that gets your creative juices flowing!

moonrise 04-04-2012 02:28 PM

I noticed that MSQC has a FQ set that's Alice In Wonderland-themed. It was too pricey for me, but I thought it was cute! :)

http://www.missouriquiltco.com/adven...-517-16fq.html

It has a 30's-look to it.

wanda lou 04-09-2012 05:45 AM

I agree that is nice fabric.

moonrise 04-14-2012 07:06 PM

Hoping more people get in on this fun swap! :)
