What a fabulous item! I have a suggestion about those drawer bottoms. If you don't want the hassle of cutting wood to fit, you might try something I saw it in a blog on updating antiques and thought was terrific.
Cut foam core board to fit and cover it with fabric. Each time you open a drawer, but will see something cheer-y rather than just a piece of wood. One sheet of foam core will be more than enough.
Enjoy your new find!

What a great find. Your ideas are wonderful. Even the fat quarters idea is great. However, I don't think you need any more ideas, because drawers have a way of filling up themselves. I don't know how they do that?

I'm jealous! I love it too. Just think of the millions of hands that have pulled those drawers. Sometimes I'd run the drawers back and forth because I could not think of what I was going to search for! Don't change all the drawers and don't change them too much. If you ever want to sell it, I am right here!
