Just had to share this idea cause it seems so genius to me. Wish I would have thought of it! I found it on Pinterest :)

omacookie 06-04-2013 05:21 PM

That's the best use of a filing drawer that I have ever seen. Can't do much with paper BUT fabric !!!!!!! Hugs

Angel Bear 06-04-2013 05:24 PM

That is a fantastic idea and I have so many unused filing cabinets. Hmmmmm

nannyrick 06-04-2013 05:28 PM

Great idea!!! Thanks for sharing.

alikat110 06-04-2013 06:37 PM

Oooooh! Thoughts going wild......would be great!

tessagin 06-05-2013 05:02 AM

That is genius. You could have the drawers labeled batks, cottons, muslin, etc.

kathymarie 06-05-2013 07:39 AM

Interesting idea....but I'd have to have a bazillion filing cabinets...... :( ....... oh wait!!!!! That means I have alot of fabric.....:)

Barbwork 06-05-2013 03:45 PM

Wow, what a great idea. One of those head thumps! Why didn't I think of that?

Grandma Peg 06-05-2013 03:52 PM

That's pretty cool.

Did you just drape over the dividers or how did you get that fabric so neatly organized into the cabinet?

mjhaess 06-06-2013 06:07 AM

Awesome idea...Thanks for sharing...

solstice3 06-06-2013 06:30 AM

great idea but I like my plastic bins to keep dust and bugs (no matter where I live there is some type of creepy crawly) out

I didn't do this, I found it on pinterest but if I had to guess, I would say that 2 fabrics are draped over each side of a hanging folder, one fabric on one side and the other on the other side. Make sense?

nunnyJo 06-08-2013 05:20 AM

awesome idea and I was getting ready to sell one?

PS Stitcher 06-09-2013 07:20 AM

That is just awesome!! Great idea!!

M.I.Late 06-09-2013 06:14 PM

I've seen this done before. Works great doesn't it. (Hope you put some acid free protection between the fabric and whatever it's hanging on). Love this idea.

Rylandon3 06-10-2013 04:27 AM

I agree with everyone...amazing and never thought about that possibility!!

If anyone was wondering how this is done, just saw this picture update. Basically cut a hanging folder in half and hang a different fabric on each half.

rilene 06-17-2013 07:59 AM

Great idea! Thanks for sharing it!

IrishgalfromNJ 06-19-2013 12:43 PM

Reminds me too much of work. I hate filing.

newbee3 06-19-2013 01:26 PM

my file cabinet does have files in the bottom well acturally patterns and such. In the drawers I have thread for embroidery and fmq.

coastienest 06-19-2013 06:49 PM

Wow, do you ever think to yourself "Why didn't I think of that?"

nunnyJo 06-22-2013 08:24 AM

ooh, think I'll use this idea if I can get hubby to clean out one of the file cabs.

lfstamper 06-22-2013 08:30 AM

Think anyone would notice if I filled the work filing cabinets? So fun!

Sandrea 06-23-2013 06:18 PM

What a neat idea, but I don't think I have enough drawers to hold my stash.

scisyb220 06-24-2013 06:02 AM

So great! Just when I am reorganizing my sewing room & moved 2 file cabinets into it!! I was stumped as how to store larger pieces of fabrics, but you have saved me(and my fabric)! Can't wait to get going on this!! Thanks.

Vicki I 06-27-2013 05:13 PM

triplerosa 01-31-2014 11:54 AM

cindynvb 01-31-2014 02:53 PM

There was a TUTE on how to make scrap bag holders for the Filing drawer filing system... Cute idea but i have waaaaaaay too much fabric to organize it that way..

LAQUITA 02-01-2014 06:22 AM

Another thought.....use lateral filing cabinet and use the top as a cutting table???? I'm short so it'd work for me :)

stitchquick 02-04-2014 09:15 AM

I been think of flie cabin for the longest now where to get one cheap!

SusanSusan33 02-07-2014 08:41 AM

Very smart idea!!

4dogs 02-10-2014 09:57 PM

you could use 2 of these and put a table top on them...makes a good table, desk, etc and stoarage at the same time...I used an old closet door for the top of my table........

deriz56 02-05-2015 08:04 AM

Just finished scanning my mountain of paper files and now have a two drawer legal file cabinet I was going to donate to Goodwill. Well, this great idea is going to have to be Goodwill's lost. Will donate cash in place to ease my guilty conscious.

BerninaGirl 02-05-2015 09:43 AM

Great recycling deriz56.

Debbie C 02-11-2015 06:43 AM

I'd spray paint the filing cabinet a bright, funky color....like coral or teal!

tessagin 02-11-2015 08:28 AM

I have a couple clear file container boxes. One is empty but not for long! They can hold a lot of fabric.

tessagin 02-11-2015 08:30 AM

You can also pick these metal file cabinets up fairly cheap at used office furniture stores or the thrift stores.

tropit 02-12-2015 06:31 AM

Great idea, but it's not new. In fact, a version of this idea was posted a couple of years ago right here, on the QB. I've been thinking about it ever since. Try searching for it. I will too. I'll be sure to post it when I find it. :)

This is so timely, because I'm in the process of revamping my space and guess what I have a few of...file cabinets! I have a bank of them in a credenza and desk unit with a couple more. I also have 2 metal ones on wheels that originally came from IKEA and, as I recall, they were cheap. I'm going to make a rectangular ironing board to put on top of them. Then, I can roll them around to close to where I'm sewing, lock the wheels and put the ironing board on top. When I'm done, they can roll back into their place and the board can be stowed away.
