I bought two "Lowes metal utility shelves." Then there is a wood shelf across the top above the hanging rod of the closet (original to the closet).

When I moved into my new abode, I had bins and bins of fabric that I stored in a double wide closet. My goal was/is to deplete my stash. It is now almost manageable. Your photos are an inspiration and I see what I need to make it easier to access my stash. Wannabee, your organization is amazing. How do you store scraps? I have a large bin of them and even though I use lots in my quilting, they seem to multiply.

Hint to those of you who have a massive stash: take a hard look at what you have. Will you really use that piece of fabric or is it something you just have had a long time? I did a good purge of fabric that I knew I would just not ever, ever use. I took it to my guild's quilt retreat and it all disappeared. It felt wonderful to be free of fabric that was just growing older and older. I can say that I have never missed it, not once. Worked for me.

I have a large double closet but my stuff is jammed all over. I need to find a way to organize it. The shelves are deep.
Right now fabric is falling out to the floor when I'm looking for something.
Thanks for starting this thread.

Susie, How deep are the shelves? Deep shelves are difficult to arrange and items get lost in the back. Can the shelves be changed out? Mine are about 16 inches deep and that works well for using the ruler folding method or storing on boards.

You can do this!

PS: The pic posted by Wannabe would be a great idea for the deep shelves too!

WMUTeach, like you I purged and donated fabric I felt I would never use. This year I finally tackled the bag of scraps that I had accumulated over the past 35 years using Bonnie Hunter's method. I just revised that to 2 1/2" and 5" strips which I keep in the closet in tubs. All fabric between 1" and 2 1/2 " I keep in a tub in my sewing machine cabinet (in the hope that I will make a block or 2 in a lull).

Rhonda- thank you! I think there's hope :) After the holidays I'm going to get my husband in there (if he can find somewhere to walk) and have him modify them. They are deeper than 16 inches.
One thought I had was to put my batting in the back of the shelves and then face them with my fabrics. We'll see.

Great idea Susie! Give a shout if you have questions.

Rhonda K- I could smack him! He told me he has a feeling no matter what he makes for me it won't be enough! haha!
We read through this thread and some of the comments made us both laugh like crazy. He said he realizes there are a lot of people like me with all the fabric and notions etc. :D

LOL! Seriously, I need to have my hubby scroll through with me where there are pictures. I know he wonders WHY I want more than 1 sewing machine (and WHY I don't want to let go of a 3 vintage machines I have that I am not currently sewing on). I think he has finally accepted it, but he needs to see this is quite normal behavior for many who quilt/sew! hahaha! :D

Dawn, your post cracked me up! Yes, make him read this thread. He'll get it eventually haha
