Getting my stash in order

1 Attachment(s)
I'm finally making some progress getting my stash in some type of order.

Sewnoma 06-17-2014 12:26 PM

Yay!! It looks great! And look at all that empty space! You need to go buy more fabric! LOL

Are you using comic book boards? I recently switched to using them and I love it.

ksdot417 06-17-2014 12:33 PM

I am using comic boards and I love them! I still have space because I still have some tubs to go through. Of course, that's never stopped me from buying more fabric. Gotta do my part and stimulate the local economy!

bearisgray 06-17-2014 12:39 PM

If you can, keep some space empty - it's great to have a spot to put things while auditioning or looking for a particular fabric.

Tartan 06-17-2014 12:56 PM

Looking good! You will love having your fabric where you can see it.

MsHeirloom 06-17-2014 01:00 PM

I have the boards. I have the fabric. Can't wait to get to that part of my re-organization. Looking good!

Oh my, think I've had an epiphany. Now I see the point of using comic book boards. Must get going and reorganize my stash. Where do you find/buy the boards?

ksdot417 06-18-2014 05:18 AM

You can get them online or at a comic book store. I think the thing I like the most is it mimics a fabric store. When I'm looking for fabric to go with something I can just slide it along the shelf and see what pops. I found so many pieces that I had forgotten I had. Still have lots to do - but I'm getting there.

Mariposa 06-18-2014 05:25 AM

Looks great!!

BerninaGirl 06-18-2014 06:20 AM

Congratulations, and so smart to leave some room to add additional fabric.

tessagin 06-18-2014 06:23 AM

Love the comic book boards. Your stash looks great.

I bought mine from Amazon. I have Prime so shipping was free. I bought 100 thinking that would be enough. HA! I obviously don't know how to count. So I bought 100 more. Then I bought 200 more. Then I finally got tired of running out and bought 600 more!! I have all my fabric put away and about 200 "extra" boards at this point but I'm sure they'll get used!! I still have room in my cabinets, after all...

gale 06-18-2014 09:16 AM

I got mine at amazon too. I only needed 400 so far...but I do use multiple boards for longer yardage.

ksdot417 06-18-2014 09:57 AM

I've gone through several packages as well. They are quite handy to have around. I've them for templates and as a guide for creasing the paper when paper piecing. I'm definitely a fan.

Prim Quilts 06-18-2014 11:35 AM

Looking good!!!!!!!!!!!!

caspharm 06-18-2014 12:44 PM

It looks great! I would love to get some cabinets (it gets dusty around here, otherwise I would do bookcases as well) rather than the tubs I have now.

farmquilter 06-18-2014 04:37 PM

I have fabric, have the boards, all that is missing is TIME to get into my organizing. Love your shelves and how you have them by color. I will have to empty my closet shelves and start putting fabric on boards and then put back in closet. You have inspired me to get moving, after I make a wedding quilt.

rilene 06-18-2014 06:18 PM

So organized! You`ll love shopping in your own store!

sharin'Sharon 06-19-2014 06:22 AM

Oh, to have those shelves and cubbies!!!! I'm jealous but hopeful to get my fabric all in one location instead of all over the house in totes. I've measured and folded a lot of it, but that's as far as I've gotten. Thanks for sharing your wonderful space. Happy sewing.

linmid 06-19-2014 06:25 AM

I'm new to the comic board info. What is it, how does it work and what size to buy. HELP!

Lafpeaches 06-19-2014 06:41 AM

I went through 3 packs from amazon. I did ruler fold the 3 yd and greater fabics. Fat 1/4s and larger scraps were ironed and placed in 2 large plastic under bed containers. Fabric bought to go together went on their own shelves. I was surprised that I have so may 1/2 yd focus fabrics and few blenders. Now I can see what I need to buy.

nannyrick 06-19-2014 06:43 AM

Great job. Looks great!!!

I actually get 'magazine' boards at the comic book store (you can also get them online). They are 8 1/2" x 11" and fit my shelves pretty good. I just fold my fabric to the size and fold it on the 'boards'. It is just enough support to stand up on my shelves. Typically a package of 100 costs about $10.

Here's a tutorial. http://cuttopieces.blogspot.com/2011...-tutorial.html

I try to leave a bit of the board sticking out the top and bottom. I didn't always, so some of my stash is all bendy on the edges from sticking over the boards a little.

gale 06-19-2014 10:10 AM

Here's another that wraps it completely around the boards. I don't think I'd like this method.

When you are finished PLEASE come to my house. :-)

Quiltlady330 06-19-2014 11:54 AM

One of the smartest thing I ever did was use comic boards for my fabric. Love being able to see it and it makes the room look soooo much more organized. I'm not even as far along as you are but I've made quite a dent. Progress takes time. :) Yours looks great.

ManiacQuilter2 06-19-2014 01:40 PM

Yes, I agree with everyone...LOOKING GREAT !!!

JanieH 06-19-2014 09:28 PM

I recently got the comic book boards and have started wrapping my stash on them. Still have a lllooonnnggg way to go but you have inspired me to keep at it!

mjhaess 06-20-2014 08:58 AM

Looks great....Feels good to be organized doesn't it?

Treasureit 06-20-2014 09:08 AM

Question...do you worry about fading of the ends of the fabric with open shelves?

gale 06-20-2014 09:36 AM

I do, so I keep mine in a cabinet with doors. But I've had scraps sitting out right in the window and they didn't seem to fade.

ksdot417 06-20-2014 09:40 AM

My sewing room is in the basement so I don't worry too much about the fabric fading
