I would love to go hang out in Suz’s (Snooze2978) sewing room. What a lovely display of fabrics and notions.

My stash was getting out of control, so I bought an Ikea 8-cube thingy that holds boxes. I put all of the stash that I had on a bookshelf into those boxes, trying to keep to specific categories. (I have a couple of shelves in a closet full of fabric too.) Well. The cleared bookshelf didn't stay clear for long because I started a new project and of course nothing in my stash was just right. Now the bookshelf is full again, the Ikea cubes are full, the shelves in my closet are full, and I find myself with a bin containing kids novelty fabric that has no place anywhere in my small 1-bedroom apartment.
That said, I like to sort my fabrics every 3 months or so because I suddenly decide on a new category and it's sort of like Scrooge McDuck counting his gold.

I organize when I no longer have space to start a new project. :D
Then I know it's time to start putting things away and tidying up.

Snooze - your sewing room is as big and organised as many fabric shops in my area! Wow is all I can say....

I seem to buy faster than I sew it up. Hmm, seems like I am very much guilty of that. Love your sewing room.

I did the comic board thing too, had it all nicely arranged. Then I changed it after several years. Now I can't find anything and have to dig for it. So I need to change it back. I had added more things to my sewing room, 2 emb machines, and a large computer area and more crafting supplies. I think I need a bigger room!!!!!!!!!!!

I am almost like bearisgray -- I only organize when I don't have a surface to set things on, can't find the ironing board or there is no way to walk into the room.

I try to reorganize about once a year. Really reorganize— take everthing out of the armoire, take it off the boards, press it, put it back on. During this process, fabric gets culled. Because no quilt is ever entered in competition and many are for charity, step one in culling is moving it to the “make fabric for quilt backs” area. Trim off so there is an even WOF and then mindlessly sew them together. It can go back on a board, next to the “cool stripes for borders”. Any smaller scraps get cut using BH’s scrap savers method and sorted into bins. And some fabric is rehomed, or cut into usable sizes. It is great to reacquaint oneself with really wonderful things you didn’t remember, and notice how your tastes have changed.

Also try to cut the leftovers from any quilt immediately. At worst, they go on a special shelf and get cleaned up about monthly.

The last time was when we finished the room for the LA. All the fabric moved to it. The next time will be when we move from this house to another. So maybe in the next 5 years. There's little changes all the time. So far this year, we moved my desk into my sewing studio, which necessitated some reorganization. By the way, I love my new location.

I often pull fabrics off the shelf just to have a closer look, try a color combination or to caress a few pieces. I try to organize by color or by project group. Just love my fabric!!!
