I have a place for most everything, except fat quarters that are overflowing their bins. At the end of a project I put everything away. Any leftovers that are small are cut Bonnie Hunter style into squares, strips. That really saves time and helps the scrap pile.

Definitely not often enough! One issue I know I have is not putting everything in a home after a shopping trip.

maryb119 03-11-2019 02:10 PM

Not often enough. I try to keep things somewhat picked up but I can't be neat And creative at the same time.

Not as often as I should......any offers to help.

Chasing Hawk 03-15-2019 05:37 PM

Usually after every project, machines get cleaned, fabric scraps get put away all that good stuff.

Darcyshannon 03-16-2019 09:56 PM

I am still figuring out the best way to store my fabric. I kind of like storing it with a project. I have a Halloween quilt in the works and now that I have to go to that bin for orange.

I have been working on tidying my area a bit each time and it makes it more inviting. Right now I have a lot of fabric pulled out because I am looking for certain colors.

I am not yet committed to a method for scraps but I am working on keeping them sorted by color and if strips they go into a separate area for a scrappy stripy quilt. I do like having 2.5 inch strips but I also like applique so I don’t want to chop it all up.

I enjoy seeing what you all write. Murphy224, your story of how your spilt water created a dusting episode is the kind of thing that happens to me. I hope it made you feel happier with the result.

I’m only tidy when I sew. The rest of my life is messy chaos.

Sew Freak 01-02-2020 04:00 AM

Sounds like you have a good start on tidying up! Of course one trait of sewing is ‘the mess’ it creates. It can’t be helped. But I’ve learned (as I’ve matured - yeah, I’m old) that if you put things away when you’ve completed the task at hand with them then that aids a lot in the tidying up process. Needless to say my sewing room isn’t white glove clean, but at least it’s respectable enough to go onto another project and not feel the drudgery of ‘the mess’. Good luck to you!

My Happy Place isnt huge, so i pretty much gotta tidy up and put away any leftovers once i have finished with a project and want to start another. I have learned to be ok with that (even though its not natural to me!).

My sewing room is a converted bedroom adjacent to our living area (open floor plan) and can readily be seen by any and all visitors and residents of the household. It was a big enough stretch for hubby to close his eyes while we had the room painted lilac (its actually very subtle and relaxing - in some light it looks almost a very light gray - so its not screaming purple!). I could have taken the more “remote” bedroom down the hall, but ultimately decided on the larger, more visible one because of the great light from two big windows most of the day (west & south windows). Having a smaller area forces me to be more organized so it does reinforce more positive habits on my part!

Yes, i try to stay a little tidier - but im not extreme! I dont put a project away until im done with it - otherwise why bother having a sewing room, right? Im thankful to be done with the days when i sewed at the dining room table and had to pick everything up anytime i sewed so we could eat dinner! I am very happy with my little “nest” 😊 and being more organized has its pluses in that i have a very comfortable and cozy room where two people can sew without bumping into each other and feeling cramped. I have my main sewing machine, a small work table, and my sitdown long arm set up in an “island” in the middle of the room. I also have separate ironing and cutting areas along opposite walls. I also have a treadle and a small bookcase in the room. The closet with double doors... well, not so organized but i am trying to get some fabric used up so i can get a handle on that area too!

Not even close to every day, sorry about that. Since my sewing studio is a WIP it gets straightened up pretty much after each project, quilt, is finished or if I am expecting company or will be doing a quilting lesson for someone.Right now I feel pretty walled in with boxes of fabric, new toys and getting ready for my annual 'stash bash' where I take all the fabrics in my stash out and air and refold all of them. There is about 3000 yards of fabric last count.

Vasilisa 01-02-2020 06:34 AM

I try to keep my sewing shelves tidy at all times so that I don't have to waste time tidying them up. The area where the actual sewing is done is our dining table, so obviously I need to take the machine and the fabric off it right after I finish sewing (like Mommy taught: put away your toys when you are finished playing). The fabric etc. goes on the shelves, and so does the machine. Sometimes it stays (covered) on the side of the table if I intend to start again soon. There is also the big fabric container with the stash - that one needs tidying every few months.

Bobbielinks 01-02-2020 06:43 AM

I tidy every day as I have customers coming in often. The rulers I am using stay on the cutting table until I finish the project and since I have a large cutting table it will also hold my cut pieces until I sew them together. I do keep a project cube that holds the extra fabric and pattern until I finish to a flimsy stage. I also vacuum every day as I certainly do not want stray threads to get picked up into a customer's quilt.

SewingSenior 01-19-2020 12:57 PM

I'm another one that only cleans after a project is completed except for a quick vacuum now and then during the project. I never realized how much fuzz is produced once the batting is sandwiched in until I got rid of the carpet in the sewing room and replaced it with LVP flooring. Now it really shows the little fuzz balls everywhere.

Mine can look like a cyclone went through while I am working on a project, I tidy up, put everything away when I finish a top, before starting the next ( cyclone) project

petthefabric 01-20-2020 03:17 PM

I move from one project to another before finishing. So when the floor is visible, I'll vacumn. When the cutting table is empty, wash it down, It never gets the total treatment, unless I want to take photos.

I am trying to do a better job of organizing and tidying up. I’ve found that I’m much more likely to get started again and not waste time when I do. I feel that I accomplish more and am less stressed. 5 minutes a day really helps.
I have some major projects along this line I’d really like to work on, a bookshelf and my sewing cabinet drawers. The clutter just seems to sneak up on me.

I once visited someone's house that was spotless. I asked what her philosophy was on cleaning. A place for everything and everything in it's place.
So if you don't have a designated place for an item, it needs to find the Goodwill bag.

While I wouldn’t say my house is spotless, I do subscribe to the “there is a place for everything and everything has its place”. I clean up my sewing room at the end of each session, I make my bed every day and I wash dishes after my meal, and cleaning comes before sewing on any given day. I will clean a bathroom before starting to sew, or run the sweeper, put in a load of laundry etc. I find that doing at least one small task every day helps with keeping things tidy, and avoids those all day cleaning sessions. I do however do a major deep clean 3-4 times a year, and I always keep a laundry basket or box to put unwanted items in, once it’s full, it goes out the door and a new box is in it’s place. I like a clean home that is warm and inviting, but I would pass on a sterile cold home.

I feel I am more creative in an area when everything is in its place. I will pick up and put stuff away each day when I'm done sewing. My sewing area is by far spotless and I can say the same about my house, although I like and keep a "clean" house. DH and I heat with wood, which translates to lots of dust. Weekly I light dust, do the floors (in the quilt studio too), and bathrooms. I do dishes daily after supper, make my bed daily, and laundry when needed. I do a really deep "spring cleaning" through the entire house once the woodstove is out for the spring/summer. Then I do another very thorough cleaning in the fall, just not as deep as the spring cleaning, for example: I don't wash all the walls or curtains, or windows again, those only get done in the spring. My home and studio are warm, inviting, and comfortable, for the most part clean, and a place I enjoy coming to after a long day at work.

Well, I'm a retired elementary teacher, which is the definition of a multi-tasker! And my mantra is, "I'm not very domestic." . I have a space set up for sewing that I designed into our new home. I have more ideas than time. I leave current project as is so that I can sew when I have opportunity. I use these large lap trays from Wal-Mart for each project materials etc. They stack well.
I put clutter in closet, which needs a major overhaul "when I get caught up"!

MaryLeeR 02-13-2020 03:20 AM

I try to tidy up everyday after I sew! I have cats and worry about pins and stray threads. I’ve learned it’s easier to get started on sewing if everything is in the right area,.

Me too, I put small and sharp things away, kitty loves thread spools to bat around:). Cold and cover with a towel (for mouth to sleep on) the project I'm quilting.

I'm a bit like that myself. Organised chaos for me and rarely forget where something is. I clean/organize when i feel the need and have the want  Multi-tasking is great
