I need ideas as to what to use this for?

My husband got this shelf at an auction sale and I am not sure what to use it for. I welcome suggestions~

Brenda M 09-19-2013 04:33 PM

I would put on a fresh coat of white paint and use it to store material in, each cube a different colour. I wish my DH would bring me something like this. What ever you choose to do with it, have fun!!!!

NJ Quilter 09-19-2013 04:35 PM

looks like an awesome wine rack to me!

jrhboxers 09-19-2013 04:37 PM

Actually you could do BOTH!!!! Ruler folded fabrics in the full diamonds and wine in the others.

Win - Win ;)

QUILTNMO 09-19-2013 05:48 PM

i would try and use for fabric!!!

IWillUseMyStash! 09-19-2013 07:29 PM

Fabric or yarn (I seem to collect both!). Cool shelf

Quilt Novice 09-20-2013 03:21 AM

I was thinking yarn also.

deedum 09-20-2013 03:52 AM

yep paint it and store lots of fabric! lots

sewbizgirl 09-20-2013 04:25 AM

Painted white, it would be perfect for holding yarn.

mighty 09-20-2013 05:00 AM

Fabric or yarn would be wonderful!

jinik 09-20-2013 05:18 AM

I'd use it for rolls of stabilizer or batting. If you can't find a use for it, I can!!!!

Karen G 09-20-2013 06:07 AM

Are the shelves large enough for books?

Rose Bagwell 09-20-2013 06:20 AM

You could actually use it for fabric, magazines, patterns, etc. Very nice with a fresh coat of paint you could do wonders with it.

oldtnquiltinglady 09-20-2013 06:28 AM

I have one kinda like that--we put a coat of white paint on it and EVERYTHING ELSE goes on it--books, boxes and tins of stuff, vcr tapes, cds, and on top of it is my flat screen tv that can be turned to whichever direction where I am currently working or reclining. I snagged mine from my son who is a "storage wars type" and whenever he goes out and comes back with a trailer full of stuff, I am the first one in line to see what treasures he has found.

I would consider mounting on a wall at an angle so you would have square storage areas for the most part. Does that make sense? I know what I'm trying to say, but not sure anyone else will understand.

I was thinking this same thing. With the shelves at an angle fabric would end up sinking with wrinkles in it I think.

misseva 09-20-2013 08:14 AM

Me too - paint it white, mount on wall at angle - great for fabric!

DonnaC 09-20-2013 08:53 AM

Yes, that type of shelf is commonly used in yarn stores. But, it could certainly hold fabric too! Just needs a little sprucing up.

jbj137 09-20-2013 10:52 AM

Whatever you use it for,
it will be GREAT.

caspharm 09-20-2013 10:55 AM

Definitely, paint and use for fabric.

Tiggersmom 09-20-2013 11:06 AM

One of our LQS has some of these, painted of course, but they roll large pieces of fabric tied up with string/ribbon and a price tag with the yardage amounts. They also have yarn in theirs.

I think the hardest part is painting it, but oh what fun after!

carslo 09-20-2013 11:07 AM

I would paint it any of your favourite colours and then I would roll my fabric instead of folding it and put it the on-point cubbies.

Alicequilts 09-20-2013 11:26 AM

Definitely paint it color of choice (white would be a great contrast) and roll your fabric, and display. I think it is a fun piece to have.

ube quilting 09-20-2013 02:14 PM

That is a fun piece. I would give it a fresh coat of my favorite color paint and stuff it full of fabric and books and magazines. having the shelves "on point" is a very quilty quality!:D I love it! Enjoy.

EDIT: The little cubbies on the edges woud be great to stash rolled up fat quarters or stacks of 5" squares. What fun.

Post again when you have it done your way!
peace

the very best of both worlds...

Very very nice no matter what you put on it. Wonderful DH!!

My thought to!

T. 09-21-2013 08:08 AM

Yep! I was thinking the same thing :), but I like the idea of alternate uses as well. Would love to see how you end up using it.

quiltqueen61 09-21-2013 08:57 AM

store buttons in tubes..............as well as fabric...

Tartan 09-21-2013 09:05 AM

So it looks like the cubes are on point. I think I would find the fabric storage bins that would fit the cubes. You could put your folded fabric in the storage bin and put it in the cube. It will be at a 45 degree angle but it wouldn't matter to the fabric.

cricket_iscute 09-21-2013 03:57 PM

Fat quarter storage, especially if the fat quarters are rolled.

lilinmichigan 09-21-2013 07:44 PM

if the measurements allow set this on its side and make a base for a cutting table or ironing station or sewing table? just use a couple of file cabinets and a piece of sturdy plywood for the top. seal the wood with a good primer and use a sprayer (makes the job easier) does this make sense?

nanacc 09-21-2013 08:16 PM

Yarn or rolls of stabilizer. You might roll fq and small pieces of fabric instead of folding.

earthwalker 09-21-2013 08:22 PM

Very cool....a coat of paint and voila....perfect for rolls of fabric, batting, or even towels. I don't store my towels flat I roll them...looks great on a shelf.

DonnaFreak 09-22-2013 02:15 PM

My first thought was to use it to store batting and batting remnants in. :c)

catladyquilts 09-30-2013 12:58 PM

That would make a fantastic storage for yarn or putting 1 color in each opening. Easy access and looks like it would hold a lot.

petthefabric 10-01-2013 05:13 PM

Anything tube shaped. Rolled up pantographs-I'd like one like it. Rolls of stabilizer. Batting

I need storage for panto's and was thinking of something like this. You've started me thinking. Thanks.

Mariposa 10-01-2013 05:24 PM

A nice coat of paint, and then put in things you want to see, or out of the way, or,,,,, your choice!

sewmerry 10-01-2013 10:38 PM

I vote for the white paint and my stash would look great on it!!!!
