Very sad topic to even imagine but true. I come to control my stash with the knowledge that I don't want to overwhelm them more. So sad to read about the dh burning all that fabric and good thing u found that tub of fabric. I told my family that I hide money in between my fabric stash. So, they know to think twice before just getting rid of it. I have given him my direction to look at my quilts contacts.

Never thought about it ... Mmmmm now will have to give it some thought,

I read where you should pin the names of your friends on your onfinished quilt tops etc and that way if you "go" when your family is going thru your stuff they will say "Oh, mom wanted Suzie to get this etc. I thought that was a good idea.
I looked up the Quilters Will and here it is.... http://quiltville.com/quilterswill.shtml |

I'm leaving my "quilters will" with instructions for my DH to let my sister and sister in law go through it first - then my one quilting friend. After that, offer it up here. You guys are my friends and I'd rather it went to the QB family than Goodwill, a Charity or a Guild since I am not a member of any group. And lets face it - you guys have served me well as critics, helpers and teachers. When it comes to my "Quilting Family" you guys are it! I will write - you pay postage, we'll fill a box - that's it! Hope when the time comes - I make many of you happy little campers. :)

I don't know what that is but my dad burned all my mother's stuff too, starting as she lay there on her deathbed in the house. I think maybe he was angry she died? She was not a seamstress/quilter but it still was very painful for all of us.
Oh my Gawd , I would have been hauled off to jail right after I shot him.....what a mean cruel thing to do unless of course he resented her sewing but still.....I would come back from my grave and haunt my husband forever and make his life a pure living hell...ok I am done-lol |

If dh can't find this, he will donate to charity or the dump. Hmmm, think I am gonna have to make several copies of this and post in fridge, bathroom, near tv and under his pillow. Oh, and one for the saddlebags on his motorcycle. Oh and 1 GIANT one, in my sewing room. Maybe I'll paint it on the wall with a picture of myself with "I can see what your doing" eyes! :D 1 GIANT one, in my sewing room. Here is the answer:
The Quilter's Last Will And Testament* *I,___________________________,being of sound mind (a statement which does not bear close examination) do hereby record my last will and testament. Knowing that __________________________________, my _________________ (husband, sister, or friend) hasn’t the least understanding or appreciation for, or for that matter, knowledge of my extensive fabric collection, which collection is suitably deposited in sundry places for safekeeping. Knowing also that ___________________________ has already notified the local dumpster to pick up and dispose of the before mentioned collection "willy-nilly" (the thought of which causes me a most severe case of hives). Therefore, I do will this collection and all other collections related to it, to my dear friend and fellow fabric preservationist, _________________________. It is my wish that she/he, upon hearing of my death and obtaining clear proof that I did not manage, although goodness knows I tried, to take it with me, would come to my home post haste, before the dumpster, and search out my collection which is similarly stored at her own abode. That she should rescue said collection and stack it in my quilting studio, along with my sewing machines, frames, old buttons, lace, patterns, quilts, dolls and works in progress. *After she/he has done this, she/he should purchase refreshments for my friends not yet departed, which friends are also her/his friends, and every last one shall be in that room and they shall hold a wake and say lovely and kind things about me until they run out and then they shall divide amongst themselves, by lot, my wonderful collection. I shall be hovering over that very spot until this is done. _______________________ shall then quit this spot and close the door, leaving trivialities to those who do not understand. This is my wish on the matter. Signed: ____________________ Date: ___________ Notarized: __________________ Date: ___________ |
I brought this up a year ago. But I've changed my mind since acquiring so much. I have a $10,000 sewing machine plus 2 others that I want my husband to sell. I gave one to my daughter and she still isn't sewing, so I don't want to throw my quilting supplies at her. I want the owner of my LQS, a very good friend, to come to my house and go through my quilting things and have a sale. I have thousands of dollars of fabrics plus hundreds of dollars of rulers and gadgets. I want the money to go back to my husband. My sister died and I gave her daughter her Bernina sewing machine and her quilt blocks that just needed to be sewed together (some were hand embroidered, beautifully) and they are all sitting in her garage since 2003. I should have sold the machine and gave her husband the money and I should have kept the blocks. I would have made quilts out of them. I am so sad to see them just sitting in boxes. I have went and visited her and asked if we could go through the boxes and I could show her her mom's work, but she wasn't interested at all. I want to ask for them. She crochets. She has no interest in quilting whatsoever. She wants to sell the machine and collect the money. Her mom scrimped and saved for that machine. I feel sick about it.

Good for you! You have given me the push I need to let my daughters know what to do with my things.

My aunt died unexpectedly in October. She lived in Pennsylvania. My uncle came to Indiana to be with the family at Christmas. He loaded his vehicle as full as he could and told us to take what we wanted. He insisted we take everything because he would rather we have it than the GW or the dump.
He did sell her machines and some of her fabric. I felt like such a ghoul. But I understood what he was doing. So, I "helped" him out. My husband knows if I died unexpectedly to first let my DILs have what they want. I taught them both to sew and helped them get machines. Then he is to call my sisters and my aunt. They will take care of it all for him. |
The quilters last will is here:

a guareenteed way to preserve your love of quilting would be to leave your supplies to a local senior center so others will be able to learn your craft and create their own. senior centers also make gifts for homeless and hospitalized citizens.
|
My husband and I recently discussed this when we were doing our wills and our trust. I specified in the trust what should go to each friend that I know would benefit from/enjoy my stash and machines.
|
We lost a couple of members in our guild this year. Their fabric was donated to the guild and at our last meeting we made quilts for various organizations our guild supports.

I was looking for information on this and found it very interesting to read as to what other people posted on this.

You can will your goods to anyone or any organization you wish to: perhaps a local school for the sewing machines, or a Sewing Guild. Quilts and home projects can go to a cherished friend or relative. Once you start thinking about people you know, you will quickly decide who gets what.

I actually laid out the disposition of my sewing and quilting stuff in my will. I don't want DH to put it in a dumpster!

However, my mother has forbidden me from predeceasing her and since she's still alive and kicking, I think I have plenty of time! LOL |
If you have more than $500 invested (most of us do) you would need to get it appraised for a tax deduction.
