Let's Organize Something Today
Happy New Year, everyone. How about we start today by organizing something related to our sewing? Pick one area. I find it helpful (if I'm not in the mood) to set my timer for 15 minutes so that I have an ending time.
Some ideas for areas to improve by organizing: One stack. One drawer. Your cutting table. A pile of scraps. Your pegboard. Your thread. Unwashed fabric that you want to wash. Or label what's already organized. Last night I organized one dresser full of fabrics that had gotten all messed up on their own. Ahem! Folded them neatly and took out ones that no longer appeal to me. Put them in ROYGBIV-ly order between foam dividers. (I cut dollar store foam board to size.) Who's going to join me? Tell us what you're starting to conquer today. Don't overthink it! |
I will clear all the Christmas stuff that somehow ends up on my sewing table off so I can actually sew!
|
I will clean out and organize one shelf today. I need to learn that if a fabric does not appeal to me, pass it on. LOL

OH, it's SO FREEING to pass it on. Get rid of it. Offer it free with a guessing game like I do. Or sell it cheaply on here. Or donate it locally to a guild--just GET RID OF IT somehow! You will thank yourself . |
I started on this yesterday. I'm organizing my scraps into colors.
|
Oh Zozee, you are an enabler!
Thanks for getting us all fired up! And it's always so encouraging when that 15 minutes becomes 30 or 60 and we've done so much more than expected. I'll tidy my sewing space, then get a UFO ready to sew - should be less than half an hour. |
I will start with organizing all the Christmas fabric that is literally all over the place!
And what does ROYGBIV mean? (Maybe I can do that, too!) Thanks for the motivation! |
ctyanky,
Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet. Wouldn't that fabric arrangement look beaut?! |
I will try to organize my project to take to Dad's in a few days while I babysit him for a couple of weeks. Get my tools; fabric; machine; etc. together and ready to pack up in the car.
|
I organized a draw of scarves that was spilling over. Not related to sewing but does that count?
|
I would really like to organize my scraps. Currently they are divided by color but I have strips, squares, snippets, etc. Can't decide if they should be cut uniformly and if so, to what size. Any suggestions?
|
Well seeing as I am not at home it will be impossible for me to start
today. But as cold as it is here in the mountains of Colorado (-19 at day break), and is currently only up to 4 degrees. That would be a wonderful project to work on. |
Zozee, you are too enthusiastic for me already. Everything in my sewing room goes in neatly and when I turn my back for one minute, they all decide to play together. Then they get in arguments with each other, have a fight, and it looks like a mess. Sometimes, the threads will join in with them, tangle everything up and poop out and just lay there. I go in there to clean it up and the scissors start in. It's just one big mess and everytime I clean it up they all get together for a party. It's and endless pit to me. I'll stay on the side lines and watch you all get organized, if that's o.k.
|
I started yesterday also. I cleaned part of my cutting table cabinet and found a white elephant gift, 17 long cabin quilt blocks. Looked at them and used 16 to make a table topper. Not through with it yet. Will need a piece of backing fabric. I will use leftover batting to make the sandwich.
|
I started looking for my sewing room on Dec. 30,2015. Hope to have found the last of my counter tops by the end of the day. I had high hopes of sewing all day today, but alas, that is not to be. It seems I am always starting to clean that room, one of these days I hope to say I have finished cleaning that room, that will be about the same time I can say I have no UFO's. LOL HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL
|
How the rainbow colors are ordered --- red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. I organize my scraps into shoeboxes on open bookshelves this way also. My mind just thinks that way and I can see at a glance how much of each color I have. My yellows are in very short supply. My blues are prolific. Blacks and whites get their own boxes. Greys and Browns share a box.

I have a new sewing table coming this week so re-organizing is a necessity! Started on my fat quarters yesterday, but much more to do to make my new table fit comfortably! It's a Tailor Made brand and I can't wait to put my machine on it and utilize all those drawers!
|
I work work better when I have a likeminded cohort along! you all who join up on this are that cohort
As for the 15 minutes, yes, it's almost always just a starting point and gets me in the groove, but sometimes I need both the push to start and the promise of an end in sight.

I'll say yes because it was fabric. And because you may have needed that more than you needed to organize something in your sewing room. I made myself take all my Christmas crap down and box it up before I headed into my play room.

I did this a week ago so my room is all pristine and waiting for me to mess it up again. I am taking down christmas decor and ready to put it all away today. That of course reveals the dusty counters and furniture. Nevada is a dusty place to live. So I guess my fun job will be to dust clean and put away that stuff and vacuum . I sometimes wonder if the decor is worth the hard work and effort. Don't mind me, I just wanted to join in the fun, but got overwhelmed for a second there. LOL... I just would like to sit and sew. Know what I mean?
|
I cleaned off my work table the other day. It seems I am constantly trying to get organized. Sometimes I feel like a hamster on the wheel to no where.
|
Well, I am going to organize (clear off) my sewing table and portable ironing table so I can SEW today. Once I sew a quilted cover for my new iPhone, I am going to move around the sewing (dining) room to get things back where they belong. Working in 15 minute segments will be perfect for bite-size organizing. Any longer than that and I get side-tracked... easily! :D:D:D
|
Oh I so need a break for EOY bookkeeping for our business....maybe I will treat myself later today when I decide computer work is too much....
Most of my scrap fabric is organized by color, but like GrammaSue I've been at a loss at what to do with all the snippets..maybe I will trim some of those to useable sizes.... |
I started organizing my fabrics for a BOM and everything just snowballed. I have all kinds of things I forgot I had pulled out. Now to organize it. I like to start the New Year with a clean sewing room but it never stays that way. Oh well its fun finding all these ufo's. Good luck everyone.
|
Once upon I thought it'd help to cut them into useful sizes, but as time passed, I ran into the issue of needing a particular color and it was cut too small. So this past summer I stopped. Now I just keep anything smaller than a fat quarter in the scrap boxes. I've found it much more helpful when I need an applique or a larger square to have the biggest pieces possible at the ready.

My sewing room is also one of our guest rooms (has a queen size bed in it). My DD has been here using it since Dec 18th and will leave on Monday. However, my BIL will be coming in Sunday afternoon (for my hub's surgery which is Tuesday) and will have to sleep a night in a different guest room (ie my son's room ) which means cleaning and putting on fresh sheets. Waaa. I just want to relax but I can't. I just want to sew but I'm tired. I'll take a nap and then do something in my sewing room to organize for 15 minutes today. I promise! |

I resemble that remark! Rob |
I put all my flannel in one section. All unused plastic organizers in one large clear container that way I can check to see if I need it.
|
When I am done here I will go into my sewing room to work on the Halloween quilt for my daughter that was put aside when family came for a week, then I "had" :-D to make bookmarks for my DD's 5th grade class, then make a quilt as a Christmas gift (which I just finished today) and there was down time for my sewing room as it is also a guest room and family was using it at various times the past few weeks, not to mention that my cutting table is perfect for wrapping too. So the room is fairly organized - but there are pieces of fabric sitting in places they don't belong because I could not resist a sale of some of the Christmas fabrics.
But today I did go on to Amazon and bought a couple eye glass holders - one for my sewing room and one for bedroom. When I sew, I now need a bit more assistance so invested in a couple pairs of readers. Nice to have a few pairs but finding them when I need them can be a challenge, so figured an eye glass holder next to my chair where I sew would help. |

Upon first reading thus, was thinking you bought eyeglass holders to store small supplies! I have two hard cases and I love to keep a bobbin of thread, thimble, scissors and a needle in them, plus a few clips . But yes, they're great for their created purpose, too. Haha. |
All righty, I took 23 minutes clearing off my cutting table before dinner. And now I'm going to start quilting a charity baby quilt that's been a UFO for way too long! Let the sewing commence! It's a reward, right?
|
I didnt organize anything because I have been watching football but I did unsubscribe to a bunch of places that have been sending me a ton of email crap. The frequency in which they were flooding my inbox will not be missed. Addition by subtraction :)
|
Hmmm.....zozee had to pack Christmas c----, and riverandwoods had to unsubscribe
a bunch of email c----, hope it's not catchy...... |
Apologies for the colorful c--- language.
Happy New Year All. |

Okay, well, I have all my Christmas fabric together -- & I won't need dot buy any more for a few years!
Then I moved on to my cutting table. You have no idea what I went through to sift through all that fabric, notions, spools of thread, paper patterns, drawings, notes to self, ... the list is virtually endless! But ... the cutting table is now clear of everything. (But don't ask where everything went ... that's a job to be continued!) It is a nice feeling to have started though! |
So much for the joy of quilting that UFO!. Ugh!! Thread kept breaking as I tried to thread the needle. It's brand new thread I used just last week! Bobbin thread tangled so I switched rather than redo it for the sake of time. Then thought maybe cleaning out the bobbin area would help. Discerned It was barely linty at all, but managed to cut my finger on the needle. I give up. Back to the UFO pile it goes. It's like this one just doesn't want to be finished. It's been one pain in the butt every time.

I have been working in my sewing room all day, 4 lg garbage bags out to dumpster. sewing table and 15 foot of counter cleared off. 4X8 foot cutting table still covered in piles of fabric to fold and put away, lots of odds and ends that need a home found for them, and another 9 foot of counter I have not touched yet (sigh) maybe tomorrow I can say finished.
