Look at my Murphy bed/design wall!!

For the past 13 years I have shared my sewing space with our guest room. About 2 years ago I figured out that since we only have guests stay 2-3 times a year I could surely put that space to better use. My husband didn't want to give up having a "real" bed to offer, so he came up with this idea. He built me this Murphy bed and now I have room for guests & the rest of the time I have open space and a design wall that measures 62"x62". Pretty cool, huh!?!?

He isn't a "finish" carpenter but I think he did a great job. We ordered the mechanism online and he got busy. It lifts down so gently that I can do it by myself. The 2 outer handles become the legs.

I can't describe how exciting this has been for me. I couldn't wait to put my string quilt blocks on and now to rearrange them so there won't be big clumps of one color together. That's the beauty of a design wall, isn't it!? ;-)

I have a 5' table (folds in the middle) that I cut on that goes in front of Murphy and then moves over near my machine when I want to do quilting on my DSM.

Oh, that is so cool, and it's like having two rooms for the price of one! Your DH is a keeper, as they say. Enjoy it.

DonnaC 05-07-2013 11:08 AM

Well, isn't that quite an ingenious solution! Looks great.

You are so fortunate to have a husband that could install the unit. I had to have one installed. It was the smartest thing I have ever done. My best friend did it first, when I saw hers, it was so much better than putting in a hide-a-bed in the room. Hope you really enjoy having yours.

Sunnie 05-07-2013 11:11 AM

What a great idea. And I love the quilt on the bed too.

Juliebelle 05-07-2013 12:01 PM

We have talked about this IF I ever get a sewing room again. TUSM for the pics! Showed to dh and he said..ok will do when we move! MOVE..not ready to MOVE...another four letter word like DIET and FOOD PLAN~~

My dear BIL made one for his and my sister's home. I use it every time I visit. Easy to take down and put up. Her's has the sewing table attached to the front of it with a hinge to let it down and the fold down legs to steady it. I like the design wall also. The pattern looks just like theirs!

I debated on attaching the table, but since I was given the foldable table for free I decided to make the design wall. If your BIL bought the mechanism online it probably is the same setup. I couldn't be happier with mine. We put a real nice mattress on it and it sleeps very well. We have one set of friends who come and stay a week at a time. They said it sleeps very well and they love having the extra walking around room.

You have a keeper in that DH. Hugs to him for a job well done. I never thought of that for my quilting room but it seems to work well. Hugs

That's a great idea. Your guests will enjoy sleeping under those quilts.

gardnergal970 05-08-2013 04:02 AM

When I had a one bedroom apt, I had one in the living room. I finished it with cabinet doors and had shelving on each side so it looked like a built in storage wall. It is so practical for optimal use of daily living space!!!

lillybeck 05-08-2013 04:40 AM

Oh I want one of these. Actually I could use 2

Fantastic idea! Hubby did a great job. Wish I had one in guest bedroom. Never enough floor space and no design wall.....this solves both issues.

We ordered the mechanism and plans online from Rockler Woodworking. It's @$300. I have no affiliation with this company, but we researched our options and decided to go with this. We're very happy with it & the directions were easy to follow, per my husbands comments.

SittingPretty 05-08-2013 03:54 PM

He's not a finish carpenter? Looks pretty good to me! What a clever and ingenious idea. Congratulations to you both!
