My Dream Cutting Table is For Real!
 

My handyman friend brought over the base and the top yesterday morning and it didn't take him long to attach the IKEA Expedit units I'd put together on Friday. We used THIS tutorial from IKEA Hackers as our guide. I had asked him to make the base smaller so I wouldn't trip over the edges and he took it a step further by angling the edges which I love!

He suggested using melamine instead of plywood for the base and top which was an easy sell - such a durable surface, easy to wipe clean and no painting required. He also added the edge trim so it's nice and smooth and won't snag any fabric. It's on casters so I can move it around - the top is 4' x 6' and the table is 30" (counter height) tall.

I am going to be adding some storage at the ends of the table once I've decided what I want where. I've got some IKEA towel bars and S hooks for my ruler collection and other tools. I've got a small pegboard unit and some magnetic strips too. My head is spinning with ideas... but those things will have to wait until I've had a chance to "settle in". I'm ready for a week of sewing and putting my dream table to good use!

But what I really want to do is baste/sandwich some quilts... check out "Come Sail Away" which doesn't even hang over the edge! One of the reasons I wanted the full 4' table width is because most of my Project Linus quilts are 48" by 60" or smaller. Perfect basting surface right? And, since this is my least favorite part of quilting this should make it MUCH less of a chore.

Thanks everyone! My DH is pretty excited too as this means so more large cutting mat on the kitchen counter and the related clutter.

When I first saw this on Pinterest last fall I started dreaming about it... it's hard to believe it's actually in my room. Feels like Christmas, my Birthday and all the other Holidays rolled into one around here!

My closest IKEA is 3 hours away - fortunately my sister lives there so I can stay overnight with her and break up the trip. I have my list started for my 2nd visit.

Oh I wished I had a table like that,. Love it.

The Expedit units are $70 each and I paid my friend $95 for the rest of the materials - so $235 for the table. The 4 red Lekman bins ($13 each) and the 2 drawer inserts ($25 each) are an additional $102 but they aren't necessary... just handy and pretty!

That is gorgeous! What a great idea! I showed it to my boyfriend and we live about 3 hours away from an IKEA store, which I never been to, so we were thinking of trying Home Depot with the same concept. I do think however that may cost more there but I have no one that lives in the Tampa area so I'll have to see what I can do. Thanks for the inspiration! And enjoy it!

How great that you have a handyman friend to help with this. Great table and super great price for all of it. Just think what it would have cost you ready-made - several hundred more.

My husband made me a very similar table - I really like the drawers did you get those at Ikea also. I may have to make a return trip - neat!

I love this! Love everything about it, from the top to the storage to it being on castors to having the corners angled.....prevent all those unexpected bruises I find on myself. Would that I had room for a great creation like this one!
