My new sewing table and re-arranged sewing room

My son and DIL have been staying with us the last couple of weeks since they sold their house in Missouri and can't get into their new one in Rochester, MN until July 1st. My son offered to make me a new sewing table from a new counter top that was given to me. We bought 15" and 18" drawer cabinets that I stained and sealed for the base. We left them at counter height so I could keep all 8 drawers. Counter height was ok with me since I worked on lab benches that height during my career. I ordered a new drafting chair with adjustable height. My sewing machine bed is now even with the counter top which will make quilting easier for me.

My room is 11.5 x 15ft and my husband built in a day bed which I often sit on to hand sew or dream of new quilts while listening to music or audiobooks. I intend to make a quilt cover and pillow shams for it someday. There are 4 large totes stored underneath it of which only 2 have my fabric stash in.

My new room arrangement gave me a more wall space to hang my rulers and to increase the size of my design wall by sewing 2 flannel backed table cloths together. I set my ironing board up in front of storage shelves in my room when I need it.
The closet is a little cleaned out but will eventually get more shelving to get things of the floor of it.
Love my new organized room and especially my son whom you'll get a glimpse of in one picture.

I'll post again with the rest of the pictures.

Oh, I LOVE your sewing table!!! Been thinking of making something similar, to replace my old Kenmore cabinet.

. . . and I especially love the "kitty mat!" :D

ShabbyTabby 06-27-2012 12:52 PM

Oh how neat is that? Lots of storage and nice sewing space. Sure wish I had a sewing "room". I have the dining room and always to to clean up and put away if company comes.

AuntieD 06-27-2012 01:30 PM

Using the cabinets as a base is a good idea. You guys did a great job.

Sewfine 06-28-2012 06:45 AM

Love your sewing table. Your room is nice.

darlenedowns 06-28-2012 06:48 AM

All is so great. Your son loves you dearly; well done. However, I would make one drastic change and that is the stool you sit on to sew. Honey that is not good at all. You need something that can support your back as well. Whoops I am not telling you what to do sorry! Its just a heads up.

hopetoquilt 06-28-2012 06:59 AM

I love the idea of a stool for your sewing area. I may get one now.

Sewnique 06-28-2012 06:59 AM

Looks good and hope you enjoy many hours sewing in it!

The stool is just temporary until my new drafting chair arrives and I got a msg that it has shipped. The height is adjustable and it has a comfy looking back. Thanks for your concern Though!:)

Very nice spot to sew and it looks like a great place to create in.

kat112000 06-28-2012 07:41 AM

Love it and your wall colour!!!

Ann S. 06-28-2012 07:59 AM

KathyKat, you've raised my curiosity. On your sewing machine, what is the purpose of the safety pin taped to your machine. I can see it is a "thread guide" but do you only use it with larger spools of thread?

Grace MooreLinker 06-28-2012 08:42 AM

great quilting room, good job

Mariposa 06-28-2012 08:49 AM

carolaug 06-28-2012 04:21 PM

I also am wondering about the safety pin...do tell...

ratz29 06-28-2012 05:04 PM

I suppose it helps cutting on a warm mat!

Yes, sometimes I put a cone of thread o a cone holder behind and I use that as the thread guide so the thread doesn't drag on the top of the machine.

Wonderful job on the new sewing table!! Have a question. I have wanted forever to get my machine level with top of my sewing surface. Looks like there's a drawer under machine? Was the counter top just laid on top of desk & space sawed out for machine? Inquiring minds want to know!!!!!

paulswalia 06-29-2012 10:08 AM

at first I didn't see your son, and thought, she must call the cat her son (lots of us have fur babies) and thought, that's one talented cat!!! Beautiful room - may you enjoy it and all that comes from it for a long time.

nunnyJo 06-29-2012 12:04 PM

It's not a desk. I bought 2 unfinished base cabinets with drawers and stained/sealed them. The countertop was one the lumber shop cut the wrong length for someone and I got it for nothing. My son made a box slightly larger than the hole and of course the right depth for the machine to be recessed. Then he made a "frame" out of 1x2's (they were painted white and were leftover scraps in my garage). He screwed the box to the frame and then glued and screwed the whole thing to the underside of the countertop. He cut out a hole on the right side to accomadate my cords and the on/off switch. I'm attaching a photo of the right corner of it so you can see the construction of it. Wow, that closeup shows some sawdust that never got cleaned off...guess I better take care of that.:o
Hope this helps you!

Here's a better picture of him that I took when I gave him a quilt last year . Of course the grand-dogs had to get in on the photo also!

Thanks to everyone for all the great compliments and comments!!:) Now I want to find some deeper shelving for more visible viewing and retrieval of my stash and scraps. Think I'll look at Ikea.
