New Fabric Shelves
5 Attachment(s)
Hello, its been a long time coming but finally got it done with the help of some friends this past Sunday. Prior I had laminated bookcases.......4 of them for just the cotton fabric and 4 shorter cabinets with the doors removed. Now I still have 1 tall bookcase and 2 shorter cabinets but 7 new 9' shelves along the back wall with the taller cabinet and 3 6' shelves between the 2 shorter cabinets. I'd had some water issues down here in the basement but fixed that but the damage had been done on the bottom of my taller cabinets so when we removed them we left them on the front porch so I could spray bleach on the bottoms of them and let them air dry in the sun. The baseboards also needed a shot of the bleach too. So while it was drying the men got started installing the shelf tracking to the walls. I didn't have the correct size tracking for the 6' shelves but between what was leftover from the 9' shelves we managed to get them installed just the same. Of course to have the shorter shelves tall enough to house my bolts, they stand a little taller than my short shelves. I can live with this. So here are before pics and after pics. You decide if it looks better. At least I have most everything off the floor now so I can walk around my cutting table.
Next thing to change out will be my design wall. Had the lumber shop cut 1.5" styrafoam 48W x 70L x 2 = 96W x 70L. Also ordered a new covering made of flannel large enough to cover the styrafoam in one piece, no seams. Have a project I'm working on right now so will wait till its done. Too many pieces to it to remove. Maybe this weekend. Also my old bookcases went upstairs to my spare bedroom made into a library housing over 500 hardback books from Florida (packed in totes since 2007) so glad to have them where I can now enjoy them..............if I ever come out of the sewing room again. |
Beautiful! You have your very own shop!!!!
wow, a veritable quilt shop
OMG, that is an awesome sewing room.
That looks really nice - won't you have a grand time sewing in there!
Wow what an amazing quilting area you have!
Wow! Looks like a quilt shop!
envious of your cutting table!~
This looks wonderful! Thanks for sharing!

What an awesome sewing room....looks more like a quilt shop to me. I've never had bolts of fabric and am so impressed by those of you who have them. I like your peg board & your batting hanging from the ceiling. A dream sewing room.

redstilettos, the table is 4' x 8'. Tried to find a cutting mat to fit the original table and couldn't so made the table to fit the mat I could find. Its reversible and self healing. Love it.

This is just my cutting/fabric room. The other half of my basement houses my quilting, embroidery and serging machines. Also have 2 cabinets full of apparel fabrics. Not so nice looking there yet but give me time. I like organization. Also under my quilt frame is more fabrics I have no room to bring out. Basement seemed to shrink on me somehow...lol
Wow! Look at all of that color...and order! Truly impressive. I can see why your books may go untouched.
Beautiful eye candy! Love the look of your fabric showing and since it looks like you might be in a basement with no windows, it is safe from fading. I am building a new home and a new sewing room. Can you tell me about what you did with your cutting table, pressing station, and sewing machine table? Very interested. Did you or someone make them and can you describe or did you buy them?
I am so amazed at the amount of fabric some of you quilters have. You could start your own quilt shop. Great setup.

Pahega, I made my own cutting table. I used the bottom half of 2 custom made bookcases (with doors for books) to hold the plywood. I had ordered 5/8" plywood but realized too late they sent me 1/2". I varnished it..4' x 8'. I ordered a reversible self-healing mat from online to fit the new table, added a trim piece to the edges to keep it from shifting.....not that it ever would as heavy as it is. I have one small sewing machine sitting at one end just for adding long borders or binding to the quilts. This gives me lots of room to move the quilt around instead of it hanging over the side.
The pressing table is again a piece of plywood....2' x 4'......covered it with some leftover 100% cotton batting I had laying around.....2 layers.............picked up some ticking fabric and stapled it from the underneath side. I had some metal "L" brackets laying around in my workshop......(yes, I play with power tools too) and attached them on the underside to keep the plywood from shifting when pressing my fabrics. Still need to tweak it as when I'm pressing hard on one end it occasionally pops up so need to remedy that problem. Otherwise I love my pressing station. My design wall to the left though you may not be able to see it in my pics will be made up of 1.5" styrafoam cut to fit my area...........96W x 70L with a flannel piece cut to one size. The one I have now is just old batting stapled to wood pieces. Works okay but not as well as I'd like. Thanks for looking. |
A lovely room, you will enjoy every minute in it.
lots2do.......actually the fabrics are in color order but not from light to dark within the colors themselves. My helpers just put them up onto the shelves as I gave them the piles. Later when things calm down I'll go thru it all and put them in the order I'd like them to be. I also have them by type such as batiks, collections, flannels, etc.

WOW!! I've seen quilt shops that are not that organized. A shop & a studio in one - you are a lucky lady. Kathy

oh what a great place!

What a wonderful hideaway! I might never surface again if I had that wonderful space to play in. Enjoy!
What a wonderful sewing room/fabric storage area! I would feel right at home there, since I also like to be organized! You have done a great job with it all! Congratulations! BTW, I like books, too, although I don't have as many as you do! Thank you for sharing this with all of us!
Your room looks like a well organized quilt shop.
I really like your idea to hang the batting from the rafters. The organization should only increase your sewing joy!
And I thought I had a lot of material. But no sewing room to organize it at this time.
Love the way it came out. So glad for you. Such organization.
A wonderful sewing room & soon a library. All I would need is a coffee maker & small frig & I'd be set.
WOW , I could go shopping there .. very nice:thumbup::thumbup:
Absolutely Love it! Thanks for sharing.

Congrats on your wonderful quilting room. I call my sewing room my "Quilt-A-Way". Happy Quilting!
Wow! What an awesome sewing room! I would never leave that room if I had it! lol You have some awesome friends!
I have a sign above my machine room..."TOY ROOM", cause that's how I view it. Sometimes I'll have all the machines going at one time too so made sure I had each socket on a different circuit breaker. Didn't want to blow anything.

So much accomplished!!! And your name on this board is....Snooze....I don't think so. tee hee Marcia

ctrysass2012, when deciding how I wanted my basement sewing room arranged I had replaced my kitchen sink/faucet with a new one so the old one came down here. Had the guys add a countertop in the bay window area as the drain just happened to be right there too. So the plumber added the water piping up around the rafters over to the new/old sink putting the sink to one end giving me a nice area to lay things. When I starch my fabrics I hang them up over the sink using skirt hangers on a large dowel rod. Got a rolling cart from my mother for the small coffee pot and microwave, added a cabinet above for spare dishes and silverware. Had to find a spot for the old fridge and new freezer too so its in the same general spot. Also have a full bathroom down here so yes, sometimes I spend the entire day down here till its time to make dinner for me and my buddy, Pepper (kitty). If I had room for a recliner I'd probably never leave.
Also, the library is done now too. Just need to rearrange within the authors is all. |
Battle Axe, I noticed your name and hopefully you're not considered one...........LOL. My name Snooze came from my job......working midnights took some time getting used to so would fall asleep when things was slow. Last 10 years of the job I didn't have any problems staying awake but kept the name just the same.

WOW! That is an awesome organization. Lucky you! It looks like you could open your own quilt shop.
Do you offer discounts in your shop? It really does look like a shop. What a beautiful collection and so well organized. Congratulations on a job well done.
Great looking quilting space & so functional. Love it.
