New Quilting Room

1 Attachment(s)
A few months ago I posted here asking for recommendations on wall color for my new room. In late April I started taking down the wallpaper which was a nightmare! I spent hours scraping and trying all kinds of tips, tricks and products. Just about the time I was getting really frustrated trying to get those last stubborn backing bits and glue remnants off without destroying my drywall I gave up and found a product called Gardz that basically reseals the drywall and allowed me to paint over it without any adhesion problems.

So last week I painted 1 coat of Gardz, 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of paint in 4 days. Whew! I'm loving the results and am getting settled in for good.

Here is the view from the doorway - the window you see faces west. I went with a soft yellow paint and am so happy with it.

In this picture you can see my Juki machines set up on back to back tables and a peek at my cutting table on the back wall. I have a contractor friend who is helping me make a new table and I'll post some pictures when it is done. The aqua cart is from IKEA and is really handy to move supplies between my workstations.

And some storage pieces leftover from the bedroom. My rainbow stash is stored on comic boards in the dresser (I posted about that last winter) and the red cube you can see on top is an IKEA insert that will fit under my new cutting table.

This window faces south so I have wonderful light in this room. It's on our lower walkout level so it stays nice and cool in the summer and is heated via in-floor heat in the wintertime.

I feel so happy in this room and basically don't want to leave~!

OH - what a bright, cheery, fabulous sewing space! Love the color that you chose for the walls and love the floors too. Thanks for the inspiration!

Beautiful room....I love the yellow...it's a lovely, soothing pastel and I think I'm gonna look for that for my kitchen! BTW...I've been a reader of your blog for some time....had NO idea you were on the board! Thanks so much for the info re: Gardz...never heard of it but I sure could use some. Did you find it at a Lowe's, Home Depot, etc?

Emma S 06-18-2013 05:36 AM

Just lovely! So serene. The floor is great, so much better than rugs.

tessagin 06-18-2013 05:38 AM

I couldn't find it locally (Ace Hardware is my closest option) so I ordered it from amazon.com after reading about in a couple of contractor/DIY forums. It was a life saver! I patched in the spots where I'd torn the top layer of drywall and just applied it right over the top of the sanded down backing paper and paste remnants. My walls are lightly textured and you could never tell by looking now where the problem spots were.

I mostly hang out in the UFO Challenge thread here but really enjoy the wealth of knowledge on this board!

asimplelife 06-18-2013 08:05 AM

Thanks everyone! Yellow is my favorite color but it was kind of overwhelming picking out which shade to use... this is called "Sunny Day" from Ace Hardware's paint line and it turned out just the way I envisioned it with enough yellow to keep the room light and bright but not too much.

It's fun to be surrounded by green outside... later in the summer I'll be able to enjoy some daylilies but right now there are lilacs outside the south window so I am letting their scent drift in. I can also see the lake out the west window. The increased light was a big factor in my move down to this room.

quiltnut4ever 06-18-2013 08:21 AM

Love the color! I rent so I can't paint the walls unless they're beige but my landlord and I work very well together so maybe I can ask??? Great job and love the floors too! Have fun!

michelleoc 06-18-2013 08:21 AM

asimplelife- I love your room! Where to start...well, that paint color is perfect. Yellow is a difficult color to paint because there are so many shades and it can be so bright. Yours is like butta! And, it's light enough that it won't fight with colors when you put them on your design wall. The floors? LOVE - being able to sweep up thread rather than vaccum, what a great idea. Windows - the light that you get from outside is fabulous. However, the view looks so pretty outside, I might be distracted by that (but boy, I'd love to try to work in your area!). Your stuff is beautifully organized. Congratulations on your new space!!!

Love the color you chose... what a friendly room!! have fun!!!

Shirlrh 06-18-2013 12:19 PM

Very nice. I like the yellow.

Wanabee Quiltin 06-18-2013 01:12 PM

Beautiful room, the paint is the exact color I have in my sewing room and I love it.

Jingle 06-18-2013 01:18 PM

I had my Granddaughter's boyfriend paint my kitchen and dining room a very light yellow (popcorn ball). I have white sheers in the DR and it looks so fresh and clean. I should have had him paint my new to me sewing room that color too. I was so anxious to get my cabinets up and didn't want to wait. My sewing room walls are a light beige. I don't have much wall space due to room layout. I do have two large closets for my fabrics.

Country1 06-18-2013 01:42 PM

Sew happy for you! Hope you enjoy it for many yrs to come!

craftynell 06-18-2013 02:14 PM

Very nice room. Lucky you.

SSK 06-18-2013 04:35 PM

Mine was yellow and I painted it green, so wish I had kept the yellow. I love it, beautiful room, I have the same floor and am really happy with it. Really like all your windows.

lovelyl 06-19-2013 03:39 AM

Beautiful! Your walls are the same color as mine. Congrats.

Latrinka 06-19-2013 05:26 AM

Very nice and bright!

Marysewfun 06-19-2013 08:04 AM

My walls are white - and I have mentioned a couple of times about painting it a light cream sort of yellow (pale) - just to give it a dash of warmth - but hubby wiggled his whiskers at me! :-) He likes things white.

I am a bit green, wonderful room and color is to die for, can't wait to see it all done. Congradulations.

caspharm 06-19-2013 04:18 PM

It looks great.

Bataplai 06-19-2013 04:44 PM

Your room is really looking great! I also went with a soft yellow in mine and have accented with purple and green. Really good color choice for a sewing room.

coopah 06-19-2013 05:30 PM

I'd love that room to sew in, and that color is gorgeous!

rilene 06-20-2013 05:53 AM

Your room looks so inviting - you may never want to spend time anywhere else! I love the wall color!

asimplelife 06-20-2013 05:59 AM

Thanks again for your kind comments... I am thoroughly enjoying getting settled in. We put this laminate flooring in 3 of our 4 bedrooms almost 4 years and I just love it. We have a lot of light colored wood trim in our house so I wanted some contrast. It's so easy to maintain.

My friend who is helping me with the cutting table stopped over last night and said he'll be done with the base and top today... so hopefully I'll have pictures this weekend if it goes together smoothly! We are using THIS table from IKEA Hackers as our guide.

mjhaess 06-20-2013 11:09 AM

Bright and happy color...Great space too...
