I'm going to think of a way to adapt this brilliant idea, if it's the last thing I do!
Since the pegs are hammered in, you could just space them however you need to to accommodate the different spools - if you sand the edges of the pegs, they would be a little easier to put in and out too, allowing you to adjust as needed based on the thread spools you have, as they change.
