One small step for quilting folk.....

I persuaded DH to make a spool holder for my thread for my sewing desk drawer. We finished it earlier today. Pictures are the before, the during and the after!
It holds 60 spools of Connecting Threads thread and there is enough room for the bobbin (if there is one) to fit on top. Each of the open spools has the colour name and number from the cellophane wrapping stored beneath it - I used a one hole paper punch to punch a hole in the midst of the barcode so the label would fit onto the peg.
I inventoried the thread spools and made a spreadsheet on the computer today to track what colours I do and don't have.
This is one small step towards reorganizing the chaos of my sewing room.
The only flaw with this is that I now found out I need another holder for the bottom desk drawer as I have more than 60 spools.:D

Ohhhh, it looks lovely!

craftyheart2 12-28-2013 09:47 PM

Fantastic. Very clever DH.

earthwalker 12-28-2013 09:50 PM

Pure genius....very clever and super organised. Well done to you both.

buslady 12-29-2013 03:47 AM

I love it. I have been organizing mine and it won't stay put in the drawer, I was trying to figure out how to stabilize it. thought of the pegs, but I have one of those plastic drawer sets on wheels (cheep). do you think super glue would work?

Amythyst02 12-29-2013 04:25 AM

very nice and organized..

Joset 12-29-2013 05:40 AM

Looks great. I may copy your idea in the future when time permits.

Neesie 12-29-2013 08:10 AM

Oh, I love it! I may have to make myself something like that!

Mariposa 12-29-2013 08:14 AM

A great idea! Thanks for sharing this!

QuiltnNan 12-29-2013 08:53 AM

very nicely organized and out of the way... i like the spindles, but mine are on the wall

Girlfriend 12-29-2013 12:09 PM

Glad to see that you are storing in a drawer - the light can easily fade the cotton thread. Great organization. It looks like the dowels are tall enough to store the matching bobbin, too.

GKSM 12-29-2013 12:11 PM

Very, very nice!

Just get one of the peg boards & place it in the drawer. My DH made one that custom fit my last desk drawer. I imagine gluing wouldn't last too well if you're anything like me.

Annie68 12-29-2013 12:25 PM

Nice and neat!

zozee 12-29-2013 12:48 PM

I love your organization and the veritable rainbow of colors. I can't fathom "needing" more than 60 spools of thread, but then again, there are a lot of things I could never have imagined "needing"as a quilter that I now possess!

Maybe you could cut foam core to fit your drawers and glue golf tees to put the spools on. That way they would be removable if you wanted to use the drawers in their original form later on. Just make sure to measure carefully before you get started.
Hey, maybe I'll try this!

Use peg board and dowels, see where you want pegs and put peices of dowel in peg board and superglue, would not be to heavy that way for the drawer.

farmquilter 12-29-2013 03:46 PM

The peg board sounds like a great idea, cut dowels to put in holes, quick and easy project.

beaglelady 12-29-2013 04:26 PM

Wow. Great idea!

QuiltswithConvicts 12-30-2013 05:15 AM

Don't you just love Connecting Threads thread? I am always ordering more colors as I do tons of applique & prefer to use matching thread. I store my threads in clear shoeboxes, sorted by color. They match the other bins & such that I have. I was never so matchy-matchy as I am now that I'm older. OCD kicked in big time!

ube quilting 12-30-2013 05:25 AM

What a great use of this space. I don't usually like to put things in drawers. They get so cluttered but this is one time that a drawer becomes a wonderful tool. DH did a wonderful job creating this great storage space for you. He understands!
He also deserves a big hug.(((( :D))))
peace

rilene 12-30-2013 10:21 AM

Beautiful holder for such pretty threads! Lucky you!

Why not use Velcro? You can buy the press and stick dots of Velcro - at least you could several years ago. Good luck in your organization.

WONDERFUL! Looks so neat and organized. Will help with dust on then too!

carolynjo 01-04-2014 07:34 PM

Just goes to show that good ideas never go out of style. My mother made one like this more than 90 years ago.

SusanSusan33 01-10-2014 11:42 AM

I love this idea!! I am going to have to steal the same idea.... If only I had a sewing room. LOL

roselady 01-14-2014 10:58 AM

Will you share the materials he used and any helpful techniques? Thanks!!

wolph33 01-16-2014 12:49 PM

He used a remnant of shelving, so it was finished on three sides, and we put the unfinished side to the back. It was about the right size for the width of the desk drawer.
We marked out how many spools would fit across, but staggered the rows for ease in lifting them out.
He cut 3/16 inch dowelling into approx 4 inch lengths for the spool pins.
We used the drill press to drill the holes and I sanded the ends of the dowelling on the sander to round off the edges (and make them smoother). A regular drill could be used as long as you don't go too far in. They could be sanded with sandpaper too if you don't have any other way to take the roughness off.
A light tap with the hammer set them into place.

Because he made it almost the same length as the drawer, we stapled a piece of purse strap webbing onto the bottom of the shelving and left it long enough so that it would lie on top when in the drawer. That way it can be pulled up to pull the shelf out to get at the spools on the back pins.

If you have a deeper drawer, this wouldn't be necessary, or if you make it shorter than the full length of the drawer. BUT! I wanted it all!!!

That's awesome!!

I need to get my DH to make another one for the bottom drawer!

michelleoc 02-21-2014 08:58 AM

Oh, my goodness, that looks great! My problem is I have giant spools, small spools and everything in between! I'm going to think of a way to adapt this brilliant idea, if it's the last thing I do!
