Paint Advice for Quilt Room
 

After about a month of weighing the pros & cons I've decided to move my quilting room down into our lower level - what used to be our DD's room and was going to become a dedicated guest room. We will leave the trundle bed in my current quilt room and my new one will be bed free and allow me to have a big design wall. I'm going to have a friend build a large cutting/storage table using the Ikea Expedit bookcases I've seen on this board. I'm so excited!!! And my DH is excited to not have my mess all over our large kitchen eat-in counter where I currently use my large mat.

It has 2 large windows facing south & west which I'm thrilled about as my eyes are getting older like the rest of me! My current room has only one window facing east and I use a lot of additional lights. I'll be stripping half height wallpaper next month to get the process started but wanted to get some input on paint color for the walls.

They are currently painted yellow (which is actually my favorite color). In the room I'm currently using the walls are a soft sage green - a color I love - but I feel it absorbs a lot of light and wouldn't consider it again. I don't want white as most of my sewing furniture is white.

I'm leaning toward keeping it yellow or maybe trying coral. I use so many cool colors in my decorating... but I want this room to be warm and energetic! The woodwork is light wood and the floor is a medium wood toned laminate.

What colors do you like in your quilting space? And why?

I have yellow - just because I love it. DH isn't crazy about yellow so that is the one place that is all mine and I could do whatever I wanted. I have to be honest and say that it has been that color for about 10 years and it is probably time for a new coat. What color would I use - yellow again I still am not tired of it.

My quilting room is in my basement so no natural light I used what I would call a gold khaki color. I've been pretty happy with it, but I love green's and red's. I think any color that you are naturally drawn to will be a good color. Although some color's will affect fabric color. I choose this color to compliment the other colors I used in the basement.

My sewing room is in the basement with little natural light. I went with a color called Lady Fingers (just like the cookies). It's fairly light but has a little color to it. I really like it.

My quilt studio is painted cream with while woodwork. It makes a nice bright space. My curtains are sage green.

Yellows and browns reflect yellow light, white reflects all colors, when I painted my old sewing room, I picked a very light ice blue, it cut down on the yellow light (blue is opposite yellow on color wheel) and used pure white light bulbs, (most incandescants are yellow) so my colors were true. ;) So I would vote for a very light blue.

My room to be is a soft blue-ish green color. My current room is a darker green color.. With white trim. I love both shades.

I'd paint mine my favore color. However most of the walls are covered with white shelving full of fabric or white design wall. Since it was nicely painted and the areas that do show are white, I left it that way.

I am in love with a pale aqua, when I get mine, thats the color I want to remind me of the ocean outdoors.

Mine is a beautiful pale yellow.

Mine is a soothing, medium blue. I've decorated with accent colors that "pop".... yellow, orange, green, white. I love it.

Try to figure out where you are putting your bookcases, your design wall, and what you really see when you walk in.
Do you want roll up blinds on the windows or curtains? If you have a wall that you do not see from the walk/in door, try to picture your bookcases there, that way you will not see them from the door. I tend to want my actual sewing table towards the middle of the room so you have ample room behind it for an additional table, to carry the bulk of the quilt or whatever you are working on. I would love a U-shaped one. More to think about!

Another one with pale yellow walls.

I have a basement sewing room with one window that faces NW. I have wood panelling on 2 walls, one day I will replace it with drywall, but not until we rewire the house as the electric box is in that room. The other walls and curtains are a pale buttery yellow. My floors are light grey painted concrete.

The pale yellow makes the room feel bright, even with just the overhead light turned on.

You mentioned coral, that would be nice too as long as it was light and did not interfere with colour perspective.

The sun gives off Yellow light, not white light, so anything we look at outdoors will have a yellow hue. This is why so many of us do not like LED or other pure white light, it is not natural. I do not worry about using pure white light to match colours, because I do not live in a pure white light world.

Since Yellow is my favorite color as well, IF I had a dedicated "sewing room" it would be yellow. However since I only have my eat in kitchen area, its a pale blue like the rest of the kitchen area. But my kitchen is blue & yellow so I still have some yellow in there. The walls are blue, with dishes, etc yellow .. & blue.

My sewing room is painted a light tan-ish color. Reason being, I don't want "color" interfering with my eye... when making fabric decisions.

I would stick with yellow. I'm currently in a yellow phase in my house and it seems to really brighten the place up and makes for a happy environment. Perfect for a sewing room.

I just moved my sewing room and painted it a cheery yellow...because..it just makes me smile! :o As so many others have said, most of the walls are covered with white bookes...and I have white felt for a design wall.

Right now my room is a bright yellow and has been that way for a long while. I never know for sure if I left the light on so I have to check once in a while. I will have to change it though. it gives me a chaotic feel once in a while. Go with what feels good to you. My next will probably be neutral.

butter yellow is the color of my sewing cave and I love it.....never used yellow in any room before, but this has convinced me to not be afraid of it elsewhere..........pure sunshine......

I think yellow is a perfect color for a sewing room. It is like you have sunshine around the clock, and it is much easier on the eyes. I used to sew in a yellow room, before we moved, and I could see better in that room than any other.

A light lemon yellow would be very pretty, since you like yellow. I've painted my sewing room a very light "cool" pink.
Do what feels best for you! :)

I have pale yellow and daylight fluorescent bulbs over the sewing machine and over the cutting table.

Yellow it will be! I'm surprised at how many have yellow rooms... it certainly helps me to confirm that I should go with what I love. While I might pick a different shade of yellow than what's already on part of the walls in that room it does help knowing that I've loved that room in yellow for the 12 years we've lived here. Like some have said, it's just a happy color and I like knowing that I can easily accent it with pops of almost any color. \

Mine is pale yellow, too. It keeps the room bright without having to go to white or off-white. I love it!

my favorite color choice would be a creamy buttery soft yellow and linen white. Post photos when your room is done - so excited for you to be going through the process of designing your new lady cave

My sewing room is in the basement, and yellow is my favorite color. However, I knew I would be working on many different fabrics there, and they would provide ever-changing color. So I painted the room a soft cream or eggshell color, and I am very happy with it. It lets the light that is there reflect back, not be absorbed. It makes the space look bigger. It is a neutral backdrop. Any blocks pinned or taped up look good against it. It is cheery enough and a nice space, despite having only a couple of high basement windows.

Lighting? Having explored all types, I found the best solution for a basement sewing room is overhead fluorescents with daylight or Ott bulbs; even shop lights are good. I do have a couple incandescent lights at either end. I also have halogen, but don't find those so useful. I have Ott lights for task lighting over machines where needed.

Speaking of electricity, the next time I design a sewing room, I'm getting hang-down electrical outlets!

Flooring? I installed industrial linoleum tiles in a light color and have never regretted it. However, I did insulate the floor first. Very important. It is also important to insulate walls and ceiling.

Think about electricity. I have a dedicated outlet for one steam generator, heater, or iron and the rest of the room shares two circuits.

Build storage in from the start, and the more, the better. Think vertical but also make it easy to reach. Think of how you work and how you want to retrieve things; that will determine how you should store things. I have deep storage for things I don't need often. I also have fabric storage on 24 inch wide shelves behind sliding doors; very handy. My bookcases have dowels mounted at the top and hold finished quilts. It's easy to move them to get books. My design wall is lightweight and made of rigid insulation; it is easily moved. I have a cedar closet.

We also put in a bathroom next to the sewing room, and what a godsend!

Pale Yellow is mine as well with white trim and furniture. and I have a great deal of natural light!!

Lots of yellow quilters but have never had a yellow wall so I painted my quilt room lime green, which is another color I had never used but really do like it.

I have a creamy yellow with white woodwork because it makes me happy.

I have a lot of natural light in my sewing room and the walls are painted a soft dove grey. I have been so happy with this color since it doesn't compete with any of my fabrics on my design wall and gives my eyes a rest from all the happy fabrics.

my great room is painted cheery yellow so I have lots of color in other parts of the house.

Dh calls this 'papaya' orange. It doubles as a computer room too. I absolutely LOVE this color. I picked it out ~7 years ago when I was in nursing school and had A LOT of homework and needed a large space to spread out all my books. Now that table has my 3' x 6' cutting mat on it (all the time). Go with a color you love, and you'll be golden!

Many artists and photographers use pale gray. I'm told it doesn't interfere with color in their project.

I wish that I could paint my walls, but we rent our condo.

Of course the own said we could paint, but we would have
to paint them back to white if/when we move.

Of course since we have been living in the same place for
10 years it's not likely that we will be moving anytime in
the near (or distant) future.

I did mine in all white and put a sewing border all around, 30" from the floor. It's very light and easy on the eyes....just my sewing machine light is enough unless it's a dreary day.

Mine is a very pale, soft blue. It's clean and bright without staying with a pure white and you still have the benefit of no "yellow light" reflections and keeping your colors true.

White because it's the complete neutral and doesn't clash with any colors. It may be boring to some, but it's a clean palette-and that's very important for working with many colors.

Even though I love color, when I get my new sewing room this summer I'm probably going to with a pale neutral gray on the walls. It's that or white, because I don't want it making colors look funky-and I don't really want plain white. Then I'll use colorful accents.

Im a firm believer in the theory that anything that makes you happy is ok, as long as its legal of course. Paint your room pink with purple polka dots if you want. Make it your space and you will be happy in it.
