Scraps tamed!
1 Attachment(s)
I have spent at least 2-3 hours the last three days with a tub crammed full of scraps. I started to just throw them away, but guilt would not let me. There were some pretty big pieces in there. So, I sorted, ironed and cut them into squares.
First I cut 10 inch squares, then used my Accuquilt to cut the rest. I ended up with: 72 ten inch squares 72 6 1/2 in squares 101 5 in squares 155 3 1/2 squares 142 2 1/2 in squares And a nice pile of different length/width strips for my Wacky Web quilt that is on my to do list. That all adds up to a lot of $$ that I almost threw away! I see a lot of scrappy quilts in my future! And I still have another tub of scraps to go... Sent from my iPad |
Beautiful. Love all your squares. Good way to use up your scraps.
Nice looking piles!!!
Love those scraps when they are tamed and ready to sew!
Oh I am so jealous. Any tips? I need to tame mine, but just don't know where to start.
As a believer in the Bonnie Hunter school of scrap management, I try to tame them at the end of every quilt - so they don't get ahead of me, but I confess to being a bit behind right now. It's always fun to just grab the scraps and start sewing without any cutting needed. Good for you - bet it feels great!
WOW - you want to do that at my house????

Next time, I think I would do it differently. Instead of cutting the largest square I could out of a scrap and then cutting the next largest out of the same scrap, etc., I think I will sort the scraps by coordinating colors and choose one size to cut a bunch. For example, if I had six coordinating scraps I would cut them all into the same size block, such as 5 inches. The next set of coordinating blocks I might cut to 6 1/2 inches and so forth. That way I can do a more controlled scrappy quilt. |
Good job!! I'm thinking I need to get back to pressing and cutting. I spent quite awhile this year so far on taming the scraps and need to keep going.
Great job! It has to make you feel good!!!
Looking good. I try and keep up with them as suggested by Bonnie Hunter. It's a great way to just jump right in and start a scrappy quilt without the bother of cutting.
Great job! I have been trying to do some sorting and organizing also. Like you, I still have a long way to go!
I love scrappy quilts! Way to go.
Wow that is fantastic! That was seriously a great job. Want to come do mine?
Also I like this idea

I can see where doing it at the end of each project would help a lot. It does feel great to have one tub of scraps done but I still have one more to go and my back is killing me!

Great job! I have the Go Cutter for a lot of different squares so wouldn't have to cut them by rotary. I'm inspired the way yours look so organized!
What an awesome job. Thanks for counting all your finish pieces and giving me fresh inspiration.
Good job! Beautiful fabric! I also cut my scrap batting up in squares for quilt as you go blocks.
Nicely done. I like Joan Ford with 'Scrap Therapy" as well as Bonnie Hunters scrap system.
Like cleaning house!
This must have been the weekend for it--I've been doing the same thing.
Great organizing job.
I tried to do that once but I couldn't bear to cut anything into regular squares and strips. I did cut some small pieces into leaders/enders but now I even regret that, because since I took up applique - every tiny bit might be just the right one for a flower part or (my latest!) a fish fin or a bird beak. So I neatly fold them by fabric/color batik vs cotton print and put them in clear plastic bags. All it means to me is that when I start a project I get to pull them all out and enjoy them all over again! But never ever throw out anything bigger than 1"x2". |

Great Job... !!!!
I have a GO to tame my scraps as well.. I found the way that works for me is to have 'pod' tub for specific sizes of fabric that will 'fit' the specific die. when im done with a project ill eyeball the size ans sort accordingly.. I keep scraps Anywhere from 2x2 up to 9 in hexis... ( 1.5 ill keep for a fellow QB member). When my tub gets full i pull out my GO and that die ( for example. 3x3) Ill Iron and cut away.. Keeps me from getting overwhelmed with scraps and i have pre-cuts handy to make a quilt quickly if i need one asap.. .. . |

Now if only I can stick to the matter at hand...........finished cutting up the scraps I had to manage, but found a cute panel while doing it and oh, look, it goes with those other fabrics, and gee, if I just put some squares around it.........sheesh, there goes my plan to scrap and then mark a quilt for machine quilting...........I need treatment........
Congrats on your progress!
I like cutting long pieces into strips and save the smaller pieces for squares. I hate sewing squares together, although I have done alot of it. If I sew different size strips together I can then cut them into squares or trianglesto make a fence rail, basketweave, or lots of other shapes.
Nice progress!! Make sure you reward yourself with some sewing time.
I tamed my scraps also. Took me several months. I cut mine, 5 1/2, 3 1/2, and 2 1/2. Anything bigger, I leave alone. Unless I'm sure I won't go back to it. Then it just gets cut into the largest size first. I rarely buy more then a fat quarter or 1/4 yard of fabric. I LIKE to scrap quilt. I think it's smart to cut into the largest size first. (10") You can always cut it down. I would say, you can't put it back together. But, I've been know to sew it back if I need a larger piece. My mom always said, you really don't notice it after it's been quilted. Especially in a scrappy. So do what's best for you. :) |
I've got nearly 40 years of scraps to cut up -- and I've been at it for about the last year & a half. But its very relaxing to put on a movie I've seen before, iron a bunch of scraps & then cut them for several hours. I get 10", 5", 3.5", 2.5", 2" & 1.5" out of mine - lots of strips, except for the 10" & 5". I make scrappy quilts often, and you can't see where I take some of the precuts out to make one, there are so many. I really love that I can make a quilt without cutting up fabric, and I love scrappie quilts.
Nicely done!!
I loooove scrappy quilts. I buy fabric JUST for scrappy quilts. I just can't help it; most of the quilts I grew up with were apparently scrappy quilts so it's a natural fit for me. Quilts that are supposed to only have 3 fabrics...I have to use at least six. LOL This reminds me that I have some scraps that need cutting down too.... |
I'm thinking you could hire yourself out. We could all pay you to come and get our scraps in order!
I've been trying to cut up 2 1/2" squares as I go about cutting out my quilts...always have some smaller pieces left over and those get cut up in the 2 1/2" size or sometimes I haul out the AcuQuilt and cut out hexies...WHENEVER I get done with the pile of kits that I have stashed I'll have the start of some scrappy quilts!
Great job of taming those scraps. I see one of my favorite fabrics has been tamed. LOL
I do like DebbE does. I start out with 10" & go all the way down to 1" squares plus 1/2 square triangles. I also do strips plus save the 1/2" strips to wrap around cloths line rope for bowels, baskets & place mats.I do them in the evenings & haven't even made a dent in my scraps yet even though I have several containers full. I have several people that save all their scraps for me, so I have an endless supply. I do get them worked up as I use them for starters & enders. Puts good us to the thread that would normally be cut off & tossed. I always say "waste not want not". My son said I am a horder fo fabric & scraps. But it all makes me happy so fewy on him.

pretty squares

It does feel good to get some organization. I hate cutting out my scraps and I have a ton of them to cut and I do not have the Accuquilt. so sad....
