Solving my flatbed table dilemma

4 Attachment(s)
My office/sewing room is heaven on earth for me. Love my space… but to be very efficient to do free motion quilting, something was missing. I have a L shape desk and the extension table for my Pfaff but that did not give me enough flat space and my quilt would drag down while I was quilting it. I needed a flatbed table but I wanted to keep my desk. I came up with this solution. At IKEA, I bought a table top and adjustable legs. You can see the result on the pictures. Another thing you can see is my cutting table. It’s an old kitchen table and my husband made taller leg with a hole in them so we could slide the original legs in the new one. Voilà! He is the same husband(!) that did my thread cabinet that is above the table. You can see it better on my introduction post.

He’s very ingenious!

Okay, I'm going to the IKEA site right now. Love your set up and love the color of the table. Is it pretty sturdy? Oh and your room is lovely, too.

cathyvv 01-26-2013 02:52 PM

Absolutely wonderful arrangement - but how in the world do you keep it so neat?

Country1 01-26-2013 04:06 PM

Very happy for you! It looks so clean and neat. ENJOY!...

amyjo 01-26-2013 04:49 PM

I love your spacious room. I'm green with envy. That was really a neat idea that you came up with. Thanks for sharing.

Are you sure that you sew? Where are the scraps? Where are the threads all over the floor? Where are the odds and ends of quilt sewing? Where are all the tools? ...But, I forget, some people are neat and their rooms bear no resemblance to my disaster areas. Very neat solutions you and hubby came up with.

wolph33 01-27-2013 05:51 AM

I love the L-shaped sewing desk. Also you room is amazingly neat and tidy.

Still having my very first cup of coffee and thought I had written this responce already. Guess Yooper did, tho, so I'm just quoting. Seriously - where's all your stuff?

ccthomas 01-27-2013 06:09 AM

Love the colors, nice spacey room, so organized, and room to breathe.

meanmom 01-27-2013 07:32 AM

LOve your room. So nice and neat. Mine is a disaster area. Ikea is a great source for fairly inexpensive desks tables etc. They have different heights etc. You can switch out the table legs too. I had a set up all picked out and was saving for it when a friend needed some sewing done and traded it for a custom made set-up. He works at a place that makes the laminate coated furniture. He made me a cabinet out of mostly reject pieces. I can't find the flaws on the pieces but I guess they are there somewhere. Mostly he could cut around the flaws. It fits in the corner of my room and is perfect.

Anything that works for you is what is important. Great space.

QuiltnNan 01-27-2013 08:41 AM

what a wonderful room! and a great idea for your 'recessed' machine!

tmw 01-27-2013 08:57 AM

that's a very nice room, i would have it all facing the widow!!

quiltsRfun 01-27-2013 09:11 AM

It would be a real treat to work in such a well planned well organized studio. I had to chuckle about your comment that he was the same husband who made the thread cabinet. Definitely a keeper!

A great large room for quilting. Wheres your fabric?

Candace 01-27-2013 09:48 AM

Looks great. The other idea and suggestion that may help you is to back your desk system to the wall. The wall will help keep your quilts contained and not fall over the edge of your desk as easily.

Wonderful room.. Especially like the awesome light from your large windows :)

You must really feel like you are getting away from it all in this lovely room!

WeeFi 01-27-2013 12:40 PM

Great room, I wish I could keep mine as tidy as yours!

Cathou 01-27-2013 02:11 PM

Hello everyone that commented… I’ll try to answer questions from different posts. First, thank you for let me know that you enjoy seeing my sewing room. My goal was to share my solution because I spent the week looking on Internet for answer and being from the province of Québec the choice was limited. I looked into the Gidget II but there was no way for me to buy this here. Yes, I guess it is my nature to be neat!! In fact, it has to be neat for me to be able to sew!! The table top and the legs are from the VIKA collection. The table is very sturdy and it can hold up to 110 lb. Again at IKEA, I bought these big brown boxes (left of the shelf unit) to store my batting, my wool, my fabric and my tools. There is an identifier on the box so it is easy to find what I need. My stash is in the shelf unit itself. It’s in the 2 green storage boxes on the bottom and I have two clear ones above that. It’s true that having my desk face the window would give me great daylight but my daughter often comes and does her homework on the other desk so this way we can talk. While surfing the Net, I found Leah Day and she’s the one that made me want a flatbed. I was very inspired by her recommendations and one of them was to put the desk against the wall to prevent the quilt from falling, something I will do when I’ll be quilting. Thank you again.

lots2do 01-27-2013 05:47 PM

Thanks for the info on the table. Enjoy your setup!

Great sewing room! I can see while you love it.

Steady Stiching 01-28-2013 05:08 AM

I think you may have solved my problem!
It looks like you have a substantial sewing machine.....are you getting no vibration or shaking from the table?
DH and I were going to go to Ikea yesterday to look at tables but got sidetracked. I will definatly go and look into Vika.

ghquilter53 01-28-2013 05:53 AM

I am just drooling over your wonderful space. My husband and I are relocating to another state and I am looking forward to creating my new quilting studio.

Perfect table, that's exactly how I wanted to arrange myself for fmq (and can only dream of a neat room like yours!)
Thanks for sharing and luckily I'm not too far from IKEA.

Nope! No vibration and I went full throttle to give it a good test drive. Because the legs are adjustable there is a spring in the leg and I can hear it when I shake the table but it's not something that is annoying, just a little spring sound!!

I have my table butted up to a corner so my quilt doesn't drag in front or the side. Bonus: there's a window in that corner!

gramma nancy 01-28-2013 03:44 PM

What a bright, lovely setup. I bet you create perfectly beautiful quilts in that space!

baglady65 01-28-2013 05:17 PM
