We need to see some tiny sewing spaces!
 

I just moved into an apt and lost my huge gameroom sewing studio space, and while I'm super happy for your lucky dogs who have sewing studios you can play football in, I'm almost depressed because my sewing space became anorexic!

So I'm thinking perhaps those of us who have little teensy weensy sewing spaces can share?

I put "small sewing spaces" in pinterest search bar and saw lots of ideas .... also went to tab "Mission Organization" on this board and found lots of great ideas.

I will be following this thread also. Although I am not limited to a small space, I know that day is around the corner.

I, too, will be following this. I am blessed with a bedroom for my quilting (the 2nd largest), but know in the future I will need ideas for a smaller space, too. Also, having ideas to expand the space I have is ALWAYS good!

I've seen some pretty impressive sewing areas that are built into a clothes closet.
Well organized with a place for everything and everything in its place!!
Close the closet door, and no one knows that the "sewing room" even exists! :)

Gina, I too had a large sewing room, and when we moved ended up with a bedroom 9 x 10 for my sewing. It took me a long time to get somewhat organized but have managed and have come to love my small space. I have utilized all of the extra closet space in the house and do have my rolls of batting in the basement. Without the basement, I would not buy lg. bolts of batting.

I wish I had a picture of the sewing room in our previous house - it was 6 ft x 8 ft and had 2 machines. Fabric was hung on pants hangers from vinyl coated closet shelving near the ceiling.

I didn't quilt back then, but made lots of clothing, drapes, home decor, prom and wedding dresses etc.
I did my cutting on the dining room table.

I just have my gidget 2 in the bedroom corner. I cut on the kitchen table and have my supplies in tubs in the closet. I feel cramped so it leads me not to sew very often so am looking forward to a dedicated sewing space

My first sewing room was an unfinished bathroom in the basement. Had room for a singer sewing machine in a cabinet and a chest of drawers for fabric. I had a pegboard behind the sewing machine to hang tools and patterns> A lot of really nice projects came out of that tiny room.

It's not so much for the sewing space, it's all that "stash."

I only have our eat in kitchen area for my sewing space. But it works

I did have a dedicated sewing room, but had to give it up. I now have half of the master bedroom. A little cramped, but doable. Room for 2 sewing tables, cutting table, and ironing board. Hardest part is storage. I am slowly trying to weed out what I seldom use...

I have a small part of a bedroom set up for sewing but I find myself sewing on a rolling table, a friend custom made it for me to work on jigsaw puzzles at couch height years ago, for our cabin where space was very limited, it could be 4 inches higher now that I am quilting, in the living room, using my big island counter as the ironing / cutting table. Maybe if I had a TV in the back bedroom I would sew more there. I really wanted a Murphy bed in that room to save on space, my dad built one that was perfect but it had to be sold with his house as it was attached to the wall and they are too expensive.

I did that for a year and finally could not take the yipping from the kids about me using the table so I took over the spare room. It used to be the guest room. I moved into a very small bedroom with a twin sz bed and a dresser and closet. suits me cause I only use it to sleep in. I moved the guests into the master. works perfect for us. I did not have a problem being cramped or moving things around at dinner or weekends. the kids did. now, everybody is happy. finally.

Anyone who has a small area has my admiration for sure, even those closet sewing areas are the greatest, I am trying to get my oldest daughter to do one of those so she has an area for sewing in her basement. She also wants a small crafting area.. So put it in an upright shelving unit with doors. Her hubs wants the basement to be a 2nd living room for them, not a catch all junk room ! But I think shelving units would be okay and if everything is put away after use then it would be out of mind out of sight (bolted into the wall of course-don't want any accidents happening!) .

I started quilting in a closet off our laundry room, it has deep shelves on both sides so I used one on the right side as a "table" and used plastic drawers, stacked turntables and other similar units to hold supplies. My sewing table (which I still use) was on casters and just barely fit between the shelves. I ran an extension cord out to a plug in in the laundry room. I sewed there happily for 7 years!

I did my cutting in the kitchen or on the homework table in our family room. My stash is still in another laundry room closet that I filled with shelving units.

Now that I'm getting close to the empty nest years I moved into a dedicated sewing room last May.

A suggestion ... if her DH wants it out of sight ... how about going a step further? .... have two shelving units hinged together, so that it opens out flat, or at right angles, but when closed it has a nice finished wood panelled front. Or just build her a closet?

In one of our former homes, I had picked out what I thought would be a perfect sewing spot ... but it never happened. That "triangle" spot under a set of stairs would be a perfect sewing nook. Again, it could be closed off with sliders or doors, if out of sight was a requirement.

Caswews ... yes, we are very fortunate to have so much space!

For first 20 years of my marriage, my sewing machine was on a desk at the foot of my bed. I made most of my kids clothes and quilts. Most of my sewing was at night. DH would pull the cover over his head and go to sleep if I had to finish something that night. Any extra room we had was used for a classroom. DH retired from the Navy. We quit moving every few years and the kids grew up. At first I got the smallest bedroom. I didn't like customers walking all the way through my house and finally took over the den where the back door of the house is right off of the driveway. More convent for customers and gives me an 18x26 room. I have a lot more than 1 sewing machine a desk and a sewing box now. I know eventually we will get a smaller house but hopefully I will have more room than while we were in the Navy.

i had about a 6 x8 room in the travel trailer. my bed and clothes were in there also. I ripped out the bed and just had a mattress on a piece of plywood that laid across the rubbermaid totes. It worked. most of my cutting was done on the picnic tables in the rv parks. and the spray basting. my machines went under the mattress in the corner where there was a little room between the totes. Except for the embroidery machine, it stayed on the desk since it could be a little delicate. i just had a little laptop stand that i used for all the machines. and the laptop too.

My space isn't small to me but one of the things that makes it function larger is use of vertical space. Generally, I see people overlooking using vertical space and it can be really helpful. As you think about your space, consider what is possible up. All the way to the ceiling. And at the ends of shelves - the part 90 degrees from the wall. Any unused vertical space. And Command hooks and S hooks. Up, up and away?

My space is 9'x7'!!( we don't do big space in UK!!) not as organised as my QB friend Izy would have it but it suits me!!! :) take a tour!!!

My husband put shelving around 3 sides above window height which utilises as much space as possible!! My little stool is just right for reaching high places!!

I have been trying to downsize my sewing space. It was getting out of control! My "attic-like" space is 13' x 17'. Sloped ceiling (eliminates wall space) , two windows, one closet door (my design wall space is the door) a doorway to the next room, open railing to the stairs. A twin bed (catch all). I love to see all spaces esp cozy ones!

Beautiful. I have yet to make a quilting room because most of the ones I have seen would not work for me. I like working in an area where I can only see the current project and I need a view. On quilting days, I set up my temporary quilting area and then pack it away when I am done. I think I could work in this area because of all the windows. Thanks for sharing.

Thankyou!! I am happy spending time in here....tho sometimes I get a little overwhelmed by the amount of fabric I have!!! I will need to live to 150 to use it all!!! Need to get lots of scrappy quilts done!!! It beats housework :)!!!!!!

I am moving next week from a 2 bedroom apartment (1 bedroom was for quilting/stash) into a 1 bedroom with 2 walk-in closets. 1 closet dedicated to stash but now will be sewing in dining area. Anxious how that is going to work and look forward to seeing all the creativity blossoming in small spaces. :-)

My room is 10x12 - not sure if that qualifies for tiny, put it certainly felt that way till last week. The bed doesn't help, but I'm not ready to give it up. My husband just modified a table for my Babylock Jane (love!). Did some rearranging and now I'm so happy with my space. It's not beautiful, but it works for me!

I am currently a closet quilter.
My sewing room is tiny it is 5'10 by 4'10 walk in closet.
My Fabric stash is stored in a 3' by 2' closet in another room. Very convenient ;)

Intimistic, i agree, size is sometimes a matter of perspective. My space doesn't actually fit in the "tiny" category, maybe to some it would be considered small, though. For many, many years was sewing space was my sewing cabinet in the family room - not ideal at all! You make great use of the space you have. And the quilts I can see look beautiful!

I sew on an ikea table in my bed room. I have an old dresser in the closet for my fabric and an idea cube set up for other sewing stuff. I would love to have a dedicated room.
Here is a picture of my sewing desk.

They do come in useful at times!!!! Hehe!!! Mine is very handy and supportive!!! He has lots of hobbies and keeps very busy...not enough hours in the day for him!!! I get lots of sewing time.....as long as I feed him now and again!!!!!:)

Intimistic your sewing space is great! It works for you and it looks beautifully organised!! I am not the tidiest worker but with a lot of encouragement from my QB friend Izy I am getting better organized!!! Enjoy your space.....it's yours!!! :)
