What do you use to hang rulers and stencils?

We converted the garage into living space--we now have one large room with kitchen, two sitting areas, and my sewing space. I want to hang my rulers on the wall, but I don't know the best way to do this. I do have a basket that holds my 6" x 24" ruler, but for some of the other larger rulers like squares or stencils that need to be stored flat--how do you hang these? Thanks!

NoraB 08-31-2019 07:24 AM

It might be useful to hang a peg board up there, then you could hang the rulers there. As you get more rulers or need more storage, you can just move the pegs around and hang what you need. We had one in our son's room along time ago. Painted the part with the holes with one color and then my husband "framed" the board with stained wood, so it looked nice on the wall. I still have that in the garage.....don't have enough wall space left for it in my sewing room....but someday....I might find a place for it. It's to pretty to not use somewhere!

amyjo 08-31-2019 07:29 AM

I hang them using command strips then if I need to move them someplace else I can pull it off with no damage to wall and rehang wherever. I too converted my garage but into my sewing studio plus I needed a ramp to get out there and not enuf room yet for my cabinets. Must mean I have too much stuff right?

I hang mine with command strips on the back of my sewing room door..great place to use..
works good..

I hang my stencils on a belt hanger circle. It allows me to flip through them and get out the one I want. I must admit though that it has hung on my rod in the sewing room and I haven’t used a stencil for ages. My cutting rulers hang on my peg board and my machine quilting rulers are in a plastic storage box.

Rhonda K 08-31-2019 10:51 AM

You can use the large binder clips. Fold the front clip down and use the back one to hang the ruler. I don't hang large rulers. They lay flat on a table top stored under my cutting table.

Other smaller rulers are stored in notebook zipper pouches. Then those are put in a metal magazine rack. Easy to see in the pouch and the directions are with the rulers.

I haven't done this yet, but am looking at putting up some command hooks and laying a curtain rod in them and then hanging all my scissors on s hooks and then on the second one my rulers. The holes in the rulers are too small to go over the s hooks so will tie a short piece of ribbon thru the rulers to hang them from. These will have mostly small rulers as I keep the larger ones in a ruler rack or guide (with grooves) on my table. They are the ones I use the most but will be able to hang them if I like. Just have to wash a spot with the vinegar as the command hooks say, let it dry and measure where I want to put the hooks. Then can lay the rulers on the hooks and start hanging stuff. Takes me a while to get some of my ideas implemented but I will get there. Been busy with the quilt club making those qults for the fire victiims and trying to get caught up and get some ahead so I can work on my own stuff.

Pegboard for larger rulers . Small, clear container near it for small rulers.

juliasb 08-31-2019 01:21 PM

I have a cabinet that has a 2 hooks that hold the majority of my rulers.

suern3 08-31-2019 01:30 PM

My husband put up a strip of woodwork, painted to match the wall, then put hooks, like cup hooks, into the strip, spaced out to accommodate my rulers. This is on the wall nearest my cutting table. It's very convenient and I like the way it looks.

I hang my stencils this way as well. Easy peasy. My rulers and cutting mats when not in use, I just sit the narrow edge on the floor between a piece of furniture and some storage bins. No extra hanging space required; no flopping around of cutting mats; rulers are tamed between furniture pieces or mats as use requires.

The ones for use everyday (almost) I hang from my cutting table with large cup hooks. Since this table is a large farm table, both ends and the side that faces me have hooks. Sometimes I have to use a cup hook with a large office binder clip on the ruler to secure them. I simply have too many (confessed ruler, template junkie) to hang them on the wall. Small ones fit into a metal box and fits on a shelf, and others that are not used that often are files in a metal letter file. It works for me!

I use the dead space of wall next to the door. I have small nails and hang all the rulers. Because they lay 'flat' they do not interfere with the door opening the whole way and they are very easy to see, use and put away.

Ellen 1 09-01-2019 07:16 AM

My cutting rulers are hanging on a nail (wall) at the end of my cutting table. My quilting rulers are hanging on a peg board (behind where I stand) at my longarm. I place the rulers that are from the same set (designer) in a pocket protector to keep them together. For example: Lisa Calle rulers are in one pocket protector, Linda Taylor rulers are in another pocket protector. Etc. etc.

The rulers I use the most (example: Natalia Bonner’s 4-n-1) hangs on its own peg with 3-4 other favorites.

This is just what I do too.

I use the smallest Command hooks and hang the rulers on the sides, inside the doors, and on the front of cabinets. Basically any flat surface the ruler will fit. Sometimes the smaller rulers will fit 2 or more on a hook.
I also use the wall behind the sewing room door to hang my embroidery machine hoops using the same small Command hooks.

quiltingshorttimer 09-08-2019 06:35 PM

I use a pegboard both in the basement with long arm rulers and stencils and in the sewing room with rulers and my Accuquilt mats. Saves a lot of space having them all up on the wall.

SusieQOH 09-11-2019 03:20 AM

Someone on the board uses a shower rod for rulers. It's fantastic. I just can't figure out how to use one in my sewing room. I wish I could remember who it was.

jmoore 09-12-2019 04:16 AM

I have a large peg board (48x48)where my rulers hang and it is within arms reach of my cutting table.

janjanq 09-18-2019 08:44 AM

I haven't tried this but someone on this board posted a picture of rulers hanging from a closet bar using pant hangers. The bar was suspended betwern between two storage cabinets. I'm currently hanging mine on the sides of an old desk converted into a cutting table using Command hooks. But I think I like the bar and pant hanger method better.

4' x 6' pegboard that I use for notions and such

QuiltnLady1 09-29-2019 02:03 PM

I have pegboard hooks and hang rulers, thread and rotary cutters on them. The small rulers and templates that have holes in them go on binder rings then they get hung. Instead of one large piece of pegboard, I have several smaller ones tucked into dead space around the room. I also have shelves in the higher part of the pegboard.

Chasing Hawk 10-17-2019 03:04 PM

I use those Command hooks.

I had some screws put on the backside of my cutting table (our old bathroom vanity my husband adapted)
I hang my rulers there....

Claire123 10-26-2019 08:16 PM

Some of mine are on a wall pegboard. The ones I use the most are in tote bags and organizers.

117becca 11-05-2019 02:56 AM

I took 2 decorative plant hangers that had some curly-Q designs and placed a curtain rod between the 2 hangers. I used basic shower hooks to put the stencils on. I find the basic shower hooks easy to open and close. There is enough room to slide the stencils back and forth to see what i have. The bigger stencils are on a peg board that is stored behind a door.

I use tension rods and shower curtain clips to hang my rulers on a bookcase .

I use command hooks that I place at the top just under the edge of my cutting table to hang mine. Easy to grab and always where I can find them.

are those sewing notions on your cupboard as knobs??? Looks like a thimble and spool of thread.... Love the thread rack and added hooks.

SallyS 03-10-2020 09:43 AM

Plastic file holder. It has separators so different sizes can be "filed" together. It's unobtrusive on my ironing station, easy to see what's there, doesn't require installation and helps me be organized.

He is very handy - has modified or made lots of stuff for me for my sewing room and machines - of course, I reciprocate with sewing tasks on a variety of shop, snowmobile and hobby things for him!

Claire123 03-11-2020 12:05 AM

A peg board.

I found a hanging magazine holder....at least that is what I think it was....anyway....I use it to hold all my smaller more frequently used rulers...it is about 5 feet long and about 12 inches wide....it has 7 pockets and I hang it from the top of one of my doors...it is made of canvas and the top has two grommets' and something stiff is placed at top to hold the sides out....I really like it...just reach in a pocket and pull out what I need....I have thought about making another one....but that is on my "to do" list...ummm maybe for several years now....

AlvaStitcher 03-12-2020 05:45 PM

Lawsonmugs, Yes, my husband used some of my old wooden spools with thread and a couple thimbles to use as door handles for the cabinets we hung in my sewing room. He painted clear acrylic over the thread on the spool so it would not come loose. I wish I had enough of the wooden spools to use because the thimbles are more difficult to grip to open the cabinet. He is a great hubby!

lawsonmugs 03-13-2020 08:24 AM

Thanks Alva. I think it's a cute idea. Great husband you have.

CMQUILTER 07-14-2020 08:11 PM

I use a 6 tier skirt and pants hanger. The clips slide so they are adjustable and can hold more than one ruler. I hang mine in my sewing room closet. Have also hung it on a wall hook and on the back of a door using an over the door hook.

Snooze2978 07-15-2020 04:57 AM

I have a ruler slotted board on my cutting table for those rulers I use daily, I keep my 24" rulers hanging at one end of the cutting table. Those specialty rulers I may use more often than others I have hanging up on pegboard just behind my cutting table and those I rarely use are in a drawer. I keep rulers by a particular maker in separate drawers so I know which drawer to open. Same goes for my quilting rulers, they're in a drawer just under the quilt frame so nearby when I need them.

I use the Command strips also. Takes up much less space than a "hanging bar." I hang all my rulers, templates, stencils and the like on these strips that have the metal hook on them. Use the largest ones available and you will be surprised at the number of items one strip will hold.
