Mid Atlantic Quilt show Hampton Rds

Is anyone here going? I am going to try for Saturday. I figure lots of rest before and know I am going to be down for a few days after but I have Never been to a big quilt show and want to at least go to one. :-)

tlrnhi 01-16-2012 08:48 AM

I'll be there, not sure what day. It's really not all that big. You can do the entire show in one day, including the vendors. But, if you want to take your time and peruse the quilts/judge them yourself/"pick them apart", it could take 2 days.
After going to the Houston show, I wasn't very impressed with MidAtlantic, but I guess it's all of what you are used to.

Damaquilts...I see you are in Va Bch. Where abouts? That's where I am!

damaquilts 01-16-2012 09:04 AM

I know I will never get to the Houston show and since I have never been to one other than a small local one in McDonough Ga it will be big to me. lol And a one day is all I can manage.
Lynnhaven and Indian River Rd are the nearest cross streets to me. How close are you?

tlrnhi 01-16-2012 09:30 AM

Don't say you will never get to Houston. It's really do-able. Just need a friend to tag along with you to help with the hotel, that's all. I think I paid about $300 r/t out of Norfolk to Houston for my ticket. Hotel was about $800 and that included our meals. Found out that if we ate at the hotel, it was a bit cheaper than out in town, then had my spending money. So, it wasn't really all that bad. I had a friend to help share expenses.

I'm over by Northampton. Cross streets would be Baker and Northampton. I'm about a mile from Weslyan College.

romanojg 01-16-2012 10:54 AM

I sure will be there. I live in Norfolk so I'll go up a few days at least. I love going. I normally go to at least one class but haven't picked one yet. May not since I'm doing a class at Bella's in Feb. I try not to over do it.

Do you have the email showing the classes and events? If not PM me and I'll forward it to you.

damaquilts 01-16-2012 11:00 AM

tlrnhi, not the finances so much although that would be an entire months income for me but health issues. If I flew I would have to take a day or two to recoup before the show if I were lucky and didn't have a flareup then the trip would be for nought altogether. :-) I have to stick closer to home.
romanojg : I am not taking any classes maybe next year.
I wish there was something we could wear so we could recognize others on the board. The Quilt show has those stars that people make. :-)

damaquilts 01-16-2012 11:02 AM

Actually tlrnhi lol went back and read the entire trip would be about a month and a halfs income for me and that's not shopping and its not fun going someplace with all those goodys and not shop. LOL

My brother said we are about 5 miles apart

I'm sure we could figure out something and then decide on an approximate time then we'd be looking. I know that at least one day I have to take my 6yr old grandson. He loves to go. Loves to go to the LQS as well. I have to check his school scedule. I'm off Thur -Sat then back to work on Sun.

damaquilts 01-16-2012 12:49 PM

Well I do know I want to be there when they open on Saturday. But my brother is driving me and sometimes he just doesn't see the importance of being on time well on MY time anyway. lol

tlrnhi 01-16-2012 09:00 PM

I'm not taking any classes. One of the classes I was looking at was out of my price range. Oh well.
I think we (Machel) and I are going on Saturday as well. She'll be here the entire weekend. She's bringing my machine back from the "doctors". Seems Tidewater screwed it up even more. They said they "fixed" it, but 2 days after I got it home, it was doing the same thing. Cost me $180!! Talked to Machel, she had the same thing going on with her machine...we have the same machines. She took it to this Mom and Pops place in Lancaster, PA. It's all fixed and it was a total of $39!!!!
Anyway...I digress....After the show, I'll head back to PA with her to do some house looking. There are 3 shows going on in Lancaster March 14-17th, so I just might stay up there with her until those shows are over. No need to drive back and forth.

I'm sure we can all figure out a time/place at the show to meet up. Maybe do lunch? Last year they had a buffet, I think it was $10. Wasn't bad. Was nice to sit and eat and chat.

damaquilts 01-17-2012 04:22 AM

It would be nice to meet and chat yes and we all have to eat. $10 is right in my budget range too. LOL
Now I am concerned about Tidewater I bought my machine from them a few years back and it needs servicing. It works fine now just needs a really deep cleaning. There is a guy in Portsmouth(?) that I am going to take my vintage machines to. Unless he isn't all that either and you have heard.
Sounds like you are going to be busy with quilt shows those few weeks. :-) What fun... Although looking for a house is never fun for very long.
Good luck with your search.

BILLSKATHY 01-17-2012 04:43 AM

Since I live in Hampton I will be there as will several of the girls from the quilt group I meet with every Thursday at the Nazarene church in Hampton. Am looking forward to probably getting some new ideas!

jackiemc 01-17-2012 08:33 AM

I know there are 2 quilt shows in Lancaster- American Quilt Show and the Lancaster Quilt Show. What is the 3rd one? Thanks

butterflywing 01-17-2012 11:33 AM

drama queen and terry - this is the very first year i'm not going because of previous commitments. virginia beach and hampton are only about half hour - forty minutes drive from one another. hopefully next year.

anyone going to the new jersey quilt fest in somerset, new jersey? saturday and sunday for me.

romanojg 01-17-2012 12:23 PM

I'm excited; I just read that they've added Raliegh NC to the circuit for June. I have a close friend who lives there. That will be a lot of fun to go down there. She use to quilt some but doesn't anymore but at least she appreciates the process and the work involved. She'd enjoy going.

msdayton 01-17-2012 04:49 PM

Our group goes every year. We go on Friday, not as crowded.

quiltertutor 01-17-2012 05:01 PM

I will be there Thursday afternoon and Friday. Let me know if there is a meeting of the members.

tlrnhi 01-17-2012 08:40 PM

Butterflywing? How dare you not show up!! When is the one near you? Might be able to make it.

I don't know about the guy in Portsmouth, unless he's the old guy that works out of his house. If so, he's pretty good with older machines, not the newer ones with computers, or so I was told.
If you bought your machine from Tidewater and they warranty it and all, then I would take it back to them. I won't take another to them, I assure you.

Boni53 01-18-2012 12:12 PM

Hi to all the ladies on this post. There are 5 or 6 of us that are coming to Hampton. We leave on Wednesday from the Farmville area and stay until Saturday. We would love to meet with you. Or at least get to say hello. We each share a room and it is not so costly. Last year our adventure was sort of a diaster. We (my friend and I) got stuck in the elevator for 45 minutes and then the room they gave us to stay in was horrible(smell). But we finally got settled. Let me know if you want to meet.

My husband and I go to the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Show every year in Hampton. We live in Newport News. We attend Thursday and Friday--Thursday, we kind of buzz right through and then Friday we take our time. Would love to meet up with anyone going those days--we do not go on Saturdays.

sherian 01-18-2012 04:42 PM

I have never been to a quilt show, I am less than 2 hrs. away. I will have to check into it, thanks for the up date.
Would go during the week, Saturday would be so busy. Now how to talk my Hubby into it.
I know my All brands store's people we be there they from Richmond.
Just what I need right now. I am going to look it up right now.

gramma nancy 01-18-2012 08:12 PM

I went a few years ago and had a great time. This year is not in the cards, but I hope you have a GREAT time!

cousinpenny 01-19-2012 03:21 AM

Greeting from (Great Bridge) Chesapeake! !

My DH and I are probably going on Sat or Sun to the show. I want to see if there are any Gidget II's available for sale and see the newest notions to add. It was on my Christmas list but Santa didn't leave it. I've ditched the generic crafts for needlework based hobbies, mainly counted cross stitch and adding quilting to the list.

I grew up under Grandma's quilts. And, my mom has her treadle which worked last I knew. My mom gave me her Singer 500 series machine about 5 years ago. When I was learning to sew in 7-8th grade, I burned the motor out of a used "black" Singer and the seamstress at the local Singer store told my mom to leave me alone and let me sew. I made quite a bit of my wardrobe back then. Dad was happy my allowance was spent on fabric. It also meant I got more as I was saving him retail prices on clothes.

I've never had a problem with Tidewater Sew Vac. It may be the store you are going to.

TwinRiverFarm 01-20-2012 04:44 PM

I will be going, can't wait! Have not decided on whether it will be friday or saturday. I only have an hour drive from home (Gloucester), but I limit myself to 1 day of escape therapy! It would be great to meet for lunch, although I usually pack a sandwich to munch happily when my feet need a rest. Nametags sound like a great idea.

damaquilts 01-20-2012 05:55 PM

I am getting excited now. Saturday is the only day I can go. My brother needs to drive and after me talking him into going to the Rocky Mountain quilt museum when we were out there he actually likes quilts. Of course I think it helped that the exhibit then was quilts made by men. I told him that from what I saw on line most of the quilt shows have "guy" areas if he gets bored. I figured Sat would be the busiest but he has to work. I would have prefered going on a quieter day. Crowds get to me after a while. But yes I am Still going to go to one quilt show before .... I can mark something off my bucket list. LOL
Meeting for lunch sounds wonderful. We could pick a time to meet, come up with some kind of name tag or something so we would know each other.

tlrnhi 01-20-2012 08:59 PM

damaquilts---if you don't want to ride with your brother, you are more than welcome to ride with Machel and I. We can come get you or you could meet me at my house. I'm right off of Northampton, about 1 1/2 miles from 64. It's no trouble at all. Wouldn't mind.....

Thanks Terri, that is a very nice offer. but since I may have to leave at any moment because of health stuff I wouldn't want to spoil anyone elses time. And my brother won't mind leaving. lol I never know when it( fatigue) will hit but when it does I Have to go lay down. I can be fine one minute and about to collapse the next. pita for sure. But I sure can't wait to meet everyone for lunch. And let me know when you want to meet for coffee.

tlrnhi 01-25-2012 01:07 PM

No worries, I understand! I get that way sometimes. In fact, a nap would be nice about now. lol
I'll let you know about coffee once I get back from being with the babies and recouperate. I leave in the morning.

Hello from Chesapeake (Deep Creek) Virginia. I am going to the show on saturday too. And would like to get up with some of you too. Name tags good.

damaquilts 02-06-2012 09:24 AM

We need to come up with a name tag. The Quilt Show has their star that they use .... Any ideas? The board doesn't really have a logo . Maybe pick one easily pieced block ?

romanojg 02-07-2012 06:35 AM

I'll be going a few days. I try to go some on my own and then on Sat I have to take my 6yr old grandson; he loves it and asks more questions than I do. Last yr the one booth let him demo the table the used the lever to raise and lower the cutting table and he was in heaven and of course if a 4yr old can work it look how easy it is. Win win for all. It's not that far from me and I enjoy just walking around. The weather depends on how many times I go. No classes for me this year since funds are tight but maybe I can take home a few trinkets.

hobo2000 02-07-2012 07:14 AM

I will be going to Fredericksburg to meet my friend and then to Hampton. We hope to be there Friday or Saturday. I would love to put faces to names. I like the badge idea, maybe use the teal and brown with ivory QB colors?

Now that is a good idea. Until you said that I hadn't even looked to see what the colors were. maybe a space to put our real and board names? Just strips of those colors maybe? Rail fence sort of thing?

I'll be there Thursday and Friday. I'd love to meet anyone from quilting board! I took a screen capture of the logo and plan to wear this around my neck, with it turned so it hangs down my back, so anyone can see it. If you see it, please say "HI!". Feel free to use print it out if you want to use it too.

right mouse click on this photo, and save target or download the photo. Print it out and voile!

damaquilts 02-18-2012 07:08 AM

I see Christine came up with an idea for a tag. How does everyone else like it? I was thinking something a little different. I will make one up today and put a pic on here. Its only 1 week away. :-) I just hope I feel next week even better than I do today. This has been an awful week.

damaquilts 02-19-2012 05:34 AM

I have a question for the people who have been before. What time should I plan on getting there? I am about 30 minutes or a little more away. I see it opens at 10. I was thinking of getting there about 9.

romanojg 02-19-2012 07:19 AM

That's what I'm shooting for. The parking fills up fast.

fidgety 02-20-2012 06:35 AM

Wow sounds like alot of us will be there some time thru the week. But for those of you going on Sat... I WILL BE THERE!!! I am taking a bus trip tour. It originates in Staunton Va. One of they LQS is organizing it all. Racheals Quilt patch.

If anyone is near there and wants to go just pm me and I let you know how to contact Racheals. There is a 55 dollar charge but hey you don't have to drive and can relax the whole way. I personaly cannot drive it due to health issues but my friend and I thought this would be fun. yes it costs but by the time you get gas and wear and tear on the car it isnt that bad.
We will be on the touring bus,, Blue Rigde Tours.
Has anyone decided what time and where to meet for lunch?
