I will be leaving on Aug. 22 to take my DD to college in Akron, Ohio. Once I move her into the dorm I will drive to Hershey, PA to spend a couple of days with friends. Then I will start working my way back to Montana. I have made plans to meet with a couple of people along the way. But if anyone has any suggestions, both quilting related and other, of places that I should stop and see please let me know. I hope to spend at least a couple of days in the Lancaster area, but other than that, I am pretty flexible. I plan to spend a couple of days in Shipshewana on the way home & maybe a day south of Chicago (Lemont area). A few days are planned in Wisconsin, but nothing set in stone. And I'm always ready to meet more friends! Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!

If you need a place to stay to get off the road and a home cooked meal near Pittsburgh Pm me. I would love to have a quilter guest in my guest room :)
If you already have accommodations then we could meet for lunch and maybe a shopping trip :D

I live in south west Ohio will you be near Cincinnati???????

If you are going to Lancaster you will be about an hour away from Gettysburg Pa with lots of history and if you are into CW repro's there is no better place to get them.

Unfortunately, I will not be close to Cincinnati this trip. I will be taking the northern route both coming and going. But if my DD continues school in Ohio (and I'm sure she will) I plan to travel different areas each time. So maybe next year!!!

My original plan was to go to Gettysburg. My husband was going to come along and he loves Civil War history. But he cannot get away from work at that time so I decided to skip Gettysburg until he can go with me. Since I will be alone I decided to do the "quilt thing". I definitely would not get to do that if he was with me!

If DD can't make it home for a holiday I would hate to see her alone at school please let me know and she could spend it with us. I just am unsure of how far Akron is from me but it is CLOSER then Montana!!!!!!!!!!

I appreciate that! Actually, our friends in Hershey have a sister in Akron. They come to Akron for Thanksgiving every year and have already claimed my daughter for that week! I will definitely have her home for Christmas! Thank you for the offer! People on this board are the best!!!

BRenea 07-28-2010 07:00 PM

Definitely don't miss the Lancaster area...I like to go to Intercourse  (yes, it's the name of a community) because they have great quilt shops and a quilt museum, plus tons of other goodies. Don't miss Kitchen Kettle Village either!

I live close to Akron U. Pull up this website. www.amishquiltshophop.com and you'll find a lot of quilt shops this is a shop hop my sil and I do frequently. Theres one in Cuy Falls and Hudson Mogadore.

jcrilley 07-30-2010 05:17 AM

You really should try to visit Amish country in Ohio - not that far from Akron. Berlin, Walnut Creek, Charm - all have beautiful quilt shops. Also a great one in New Philadelphia Oh - The Material Girl - great selection and prices.

Marlys 07-30-2010 07:13 AM

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. My list is growing! Now if money only grew on trees!!! But I have been saving up for this opportunity.

My daughter lives in Cuy Falls and I lived in Stow for 19 years. I wasn't into quilting at that time so I don't know about these LQS'. Can you tell me where they are so I can do my own shop hop next time I visit?
Thanks, Linda

Awesome - I love that you included addresses! I bought a GPS just for this trip so the addresses are priceless! Thanks so much!

lauriejo 07-31-2010 05:22 PM

I got a real chuckle out of this thread. I live in Munroe Falls, right between Stow and Cuyahoga Falls and my son is starting at Akron U this fall. Small world. I don't know the Bernina store in Hudson, but the address of the Twinsburg store is 8900 Darrow Rd 330-487-0460, and the Spider Web is 2123 Martin Rd 330-594-7119.

Dee 07-31-2010 06:53 PM

Have a great safe trip. :D

So if you live that close, do you want to go shopping with me?!!

I've actually had a couple of people ask me why my daughter chose Kent State over Akron U. But around here all I here is "Why is she going so far away?" I am going to miss her!

Since the addy is Darrow Rd., Perhaps the Twinsburg and Hudson store are one and the same? Wish I was visiting my daughter, then I would go shopping with you. Smiles and hugs

lauriejo, maybe next time I am over that way we can meet for coffee and quilty talk/time. I won't have a way to sew with you but would love to see some of your projects. I have a good friend that lives in Munroe Falls, she used to be a nurse at Childrens, but is now retired. We bowled together there in Stow for many years. Rosemary worked in the burn center and I always admired her dedication to such a difficult job.

dharen7 08-01-2010 11:21 AM

It is.

lauriejo 08-03-2010 02:51 AM

I am always ready to shop for fabric! I wonder if any of the other NE Ohio members would like to come along?

quiltingranny 08-05-2010 08:31 AM

If you do a computer search on "quilt shops in Lancaster county, Pa" you will find a list. My personal favorites are:

1. The Quilt and fabric shack, 3137 Old Philadelphia Pike (Rt.340), Bird in Hand, Pa 17505 (717-768-0338)
2. Zook's Dry Goods, 3535 Old Philadelphia Pike (Rt 340) Intercourse, Pa (717-768-8153)
3. The Old Country store, 3510 Old Philadelphia Pike (Rt.340)Intercourse, Pa (800-828-8218)
4. Dutchland Quilt Patch, 2851 A Lincoln Hwy E (Rt 30), Ronks, Pa (800-411-3221)

There is a new one in Bird in Hand but I'm don't remember the name. I'll have to see if I can find it. I live about an hour away but could meet you if I'm in town to show you around. PM me if you're interested.

Laurie I might be up for that depending on when. I'm in Cleveland so not far at all from anyone. hehehe

PS Stitcher 08-12-2010 06:14 AM

There is a great quilt shop in Hershey. They were even chosen to be in a magazine this spring of Top 10 shops. Here is their information.

Quiltmakers Cottage 1034 E Chocolate Ave Hershey, PA 17033 717~534~9900

And if you are coming back near Pittsburgh, there are a ton there!

gaigai 08-12-2010 06:22 AM

PM kwhite. She lives in central PA and knows all the best places. Wish I could get there too!! Have a great time!

Nettie 08-12-2010 06:24 AM

Hi to everyone from or near Akron, OH.
Since we are talking quilt shops in and around the area there can anyone tell me if the Yankee Peddler right outside of Akron is still in business? My sister and I used to visit that shop quite alot when we were looking for doll patterns.

Thanks
Nettie

dharen7 08-12-2010 07:38 AM

Are you talking about the Yankee Barn that used to be in Hartville that used to sell doll patterns? If so that ones closed

mlaceruby 08-12-2010 08:28 AM

Sorry to hear that! I loved the Barn shop!

Nettie 08-12-2010 10:01 AM

Yes, that was the one I was talking about. I am sorry it closed. With such an interest in quilting these days I am surprised at the closing. My sister and I will be checking out all the other stores that have been listed here.
Thank you
Nettie

Meeting all of you will come close to making up for leaving my daughter 1600 miles away from home for the next year! LOL!
