Default 1st attempt at log cabin- am I doing this right?

I want to make a scrappy log cabin, using the same red block throughout for the center square. I know you are supposed to do lights and darks, but before I get too many squares made I'd like your opinions. Is the contrast enough? I'm enjoying making them but if the lights need to be lighter I prefer knowing now. Thanks for your input.
I'm really looking forward to playing with the placement of the blocks for different affects and see which one I like best. I'm making this for the bed in our camper. I want to make it to be a spread that hangs over the edge, not just a quilt size. I am getting entirely toooo many scraps, so thought this'd be a nice way to use them up. I'm also going to do it as a QAYG project. That's another reason why I wanted to check with you all before I wasted time & supplies on that, if I really should tweak it before going on.

Looks great to me. As for the red center block, really its supposed to be red. Represents the warmth of the home fires! Nicely done.

Or you can use a black square that was used on log cabins and then hung out on the clothes lines so that run away slaves knew this was a safe haven for them to rest and get shelter. Sometimes they's even painted a side of a barn or a bench with it just so that the message was there for them.
