Wow what a way to get your stash and scraps under control.
Was wondering how small you can cut the length.
my pattern calls foe 6 inch. Has anyone tried smaller.

if you cut them shorter, you should probably also make them narrower.

the length you need for the strips will depend on the dimensions of the center square or starting square/triangle at the bottom. the smaller the square (or triangle) the shorter your strips can be.

the shorter the strips, of course, the narrower the overall braid.

I did a huge goof once, and the strips were of varying widths. What a disaster! After trying and trying to get the edges/centers aligned, it turned out fine, but I learned a lesson. Be sure to start with strips the same width!!
