if you cut them shorter, you should probably also make them narrower.
the length you need for the strips will depend on the dimensions of the center square or starting square/triangle at the bottom. the smaller the square (or triangle) the shorter your strips can be.

I did a huge goof once, and the strips were of varying widths. What a disaster! After trying and trying to get the edges/centers aligned, it turned out fine, but I learned a lesson. Be sure to start with strips the same width!!
